TEMPE, AZ — A train has caught fire after a derailment on a railroad bridge over Tempe Town Lake. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. local time on the south side of the lake near Mill Avenue.A spokesperson with Tempe Fire Department says the incident involves a Union Pacific train that derailed and caused a partial bridge collapse over Tempe Town Lake.About 90 firefighters from multiple departments are at the scene of the second-alarm hazardous materials response.A Union Pacific spokesperson says eight to 10 rail cars caught fire and three tank cars fell onto an empty park area below. The spokesperson says two tank cars contained cyclohexanone and one contained a rubber material. None are believed to be leaking and no tank cars were involved in the fire. One person was reportedly treated for smoke inhalation, but the train crew is not injured. No other injuries have been reported. The Phoenix region's Valley Metro says light rail trains are not crossing Tempe Town Lake at this time due to the fire. Valley Metro's train service is being rerouted at Mill Ave/3rd St and Center Parkway/Wash St.Tempe Police say some streets in the area are also restricted and freeway traffic on the nearby Loop 202 may be impacted due to smoke. It's unknown what caused the derailment. This story was originally published by Ashley Loose on KNXV in Phoenix. 1357

TAMPA, Fla. — Kids may be spending more time online this summer than in years past due to the coronavirus pandemic — and authorities warn online predators could use that extra, unsupervised time to their advantage."They had some incidences where people had broken into their Zoom calls, and what was great about that was because we had created a space where dialogue can happen, they told me about it," Damaris Allen, the Immediate Past President of the Hillsborough County PTA said. "That was really important because we had the groundwork laid."With school out and summer in full swing, many kids are spending their time online during the health crisis. Some officials worry now may be the most dangerous time for online predators."With camps being limited, parents being stretched thin, and kids spending more time online, it creates, unfortunately, a perfect storm for online predators," Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said.Warren released a video on social media Monday with three tips for parents can take to help their kids have a "Secure Summer."First, the State Attorney says talk to your child and explain how they may be approached."Secondly, make sure that parents are actually watching what their kids are doing online," said Warren "Have the passwords, check to see what kids are doing and what information they're receiving."Warren also suggests using parental controls on devices and apps to choose what your child can access. His office says it has already seen online predators try to exploit children during the pandemic."Law enforcement is really paying attention to what's going on online now. We're working overtime to catch online predators," Warren said. "We're going to aggressively prosecute them. We won't stand for anyone trying to take advantage of our kids, especially during such a difficult time for all of us."Parents suggest starting that conversation now, so kids know they have a safe space to start a dialogue."This is a scary topic, don't avoid it because it's a scary topic," said Allen. "An educated child is a child less likely to be put in danger."This story was originally published by Mary O'Connell on WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 2189

The American Heart Association highlighted findings on Friday indicating the coronavirus may cause more heart damage than previously believed. The AHA says that inflammation of the vascular system and injury to the heart occurs in 20 to 30 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients. The heart damage results in the 40% of all coronavirus-related deaths, the American Heart Association said.Studies have suggested that 8 to 12 percent of all coronavirus infections have caused heart damage. There is also concern that the resulting heart damage causes a greater risk for heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular-related illnesses even following recovery.“Much remains to be learned about COVID-19 infection and the heart. Although we think of the lungs being the primary target, there are frequent biomarker elevations noted in infected patients that are usually associated with acute heart injury. Moreover, several devastating complications of COVID-19 are cardiac in nature and may result in lingering cardiac dysfunction beyond the course of the viral illness itself,” said Mitchell S. V. Elkind, president of the American Heart Association. The American Heart Associated is working with 150 US hospitals and 14,000 patients to better understand the virus’ impact to the heart. 1301

TAMPA, Fla. - A "Back the Blue" mural was painted outside the Tampa Police Department headquarters over the weekend. On Saturday, about 40 people came together and painted the mural on East Madison Street in downtown Tampa. The mural was created to show support for law enforcement."When they walk into the police department or when they go to work or they're patrolling the streets, they see that mural and they know they have a community behind them," said Cassandra Kistler.Kelli Campbell and Cassandra Kistler are members of Back the Blue Florida. The ladies helped organize the project.People from Community Patriots of Tampa also helped paint the mural."We had people just walking by that were inspired to pick up a brush and a roller and start helping us," said Campbell. Some people on social media are criticizing the mural or showing their support."We've been criticized a lot like it's not the best, it's not this, it's not that. It's community and community did it and brought it together and made it happen," said Cassandra Kistler.A Change.org petition said, "This mural seems to mock the Black Lives Matter movement and is a huge slap in the face for all the protesting we have been doing all over this country.""Everybody's entitled to voice their opinions and voice what they want," said Kistler."This has nothing to do with race. This is not against anyone. It's not to counter anyone. This is 100% showing support for law enforcement, all branches and truly all first responders," said Campbell.A City of Tampa spokesperson said the mural was not approved by the city.“Any tribute to honor their service is welcome. It’s unfortunate they didn’t see the permitting process through so that our community could participate in showing their appreciation for the brave men and women that service our residents every day," said Mayor Jane Castor.Kistler claims the group got verbal approval from Mayor Castor's office. This article was written by Julie Salomone for WFTS. 1989
