TIANJIN, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang urged enterprises to contribute to industrial growth by bringing central government's guidance of boosting domestic demand into full play.     Zhang made the remark during his visit to 13 enterprises in the machinery, light industry, petrochemical, textile, auto and other sectors as well as ports, in Tianjin Municipality from May 7 to 8.     Zhang said positive signs had been seen in the country's industrial sector, but there were still challenges ahead.     He underscored firm implementation of the central government policy to ensure economic growth, boost domestic demand and enhance industrial upgrading.     He encouraged enterprises to seek to produce products that would meet market needs and expand both domestic and international markets.     Enterprises should improve their management and push forward innovation and structural adjustment, he said.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council announced Wednesday further support policies, including expanded export credit insurance, tax breaks and more financial access, to help exporters. An executive meeting of the State Council, or Cabinet, also said the country would keep the yuan "basically stable" at a "reasonable and balanced" level to help exporters avoid exchange risks.     The meeting was presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao. This file photo shows the launch of the Jan Van Cent, a 12,000-tonnage multi-purposed oceangoing freight ship for an export order to the Netherlands, is held at the Yichang Shipyard, in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, May 9, 2009    The government will provide 84 billion U.S. dollars worth of short-term export credit insurance to trading companies to help increase exports.     Preferential policies and tax breaks will mainly go to labor-intensive and high-tech industries to protect world market share.     Smaller companies would get more financing guarantees from financial institutions, as the government promised to allocate unspecified extra funding from the central budget.     Shrinking external demand that lead to export declines would remain "the biggest difficulty" facing the economy, participants to the meeting agreed.     They also called for coordinated efforts in expanding domestic demand and stabilizing exports, so as to reduce the impact of global financial crisis on China's foreign trade to the minimum.     China raised export rebates on some products after exports shrank on weakening overseas demand since the second half of 2008. For example, the government raised the tax rebate rate for textiles five times since August, most recently last month when the rate went from 15 percent to 16 percent.

TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here Tuesday.     While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10 million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference.     Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.     Chen has been in detention since last December and faces life in prison if convicted.     He was elected to the post of Taiwan leader eight years ago but was ousted in an election in May last year.

BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday honored dozens of military organizations and individuals for their contribution to the nation's quake relief or scientific research work.     President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao signed a decree awarding merits to 15 organizations and 28 individuals with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).     Three classes of merits were meted out in accordance with the receivers' contribution.     Ten units and individuals were cited for their relief efforts after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern China on May 12 last year, two for "remarkable troop building," five for "achievements in major scientific experiments," two for artist creations and the rest for achievements in scientific researches, according to the decree.     In a separate decree signed by Hu, four other soldiers and officers were awarded honorable titles as being "model examples" for their peers.     One of them, Meng Xiangbin, was given the honor posthumously as he was drowned while trying to save a suicidal woman from a river in eastern Zhejiang Province in 2007.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed concerns about the development of Taliban militants in Pakistan on Wednesday, calling for effective efforts to curb the insurgents advance in the war-torn country.     Speaking to the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, Clinton said that the U.S. government believes Pakistani government shares U.S. goals in defeating terrorism.     However, she criticized Pakistani authorities for having made a peace deal that allows militants in Pakistan's northwest to impose Islamic law in exchange for a cease-fire with Taliban insurgents. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the foreign policies of President Barack Obama administration on the Capitol Hill in Washington, April 22, 2009    "I think the Pakistani government is basically abdicating to the Taliban and the extremists," she said, urging Pakistan's government and Pakistanis at home and abroad to "speak out forcefully against a policy that is ceding more and more territory to the insurgents."     It was reported that Taliban militants in Pakistan's Swat valley are stretching out to the region just 110 kilometers from the capital Islamabad, in a bid to broaden their control.     Swat has been one of Pakistan's main tourist destinations since2007, when the security forces began to fight against local Taliban in the region.     Last week, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari signed the regulation introducing Sharia, or Islamic law, into northwestern Pakistan. The local government has issued a formal notification on enforcing Sharia in Malakand and Kohistan divisions including the restive Swat valley. Washington has expressed concerns about the enforcement of Islamic law in the region. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (R Front) arrives to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the foreign policies of President Barack Obama administration, as anti-war protestors hold a demonstration, on the Capitol Hill in Washington, April 22, 2009
