SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A billing error has double charged approximately 411,000 Medicare beneficiaries, according to government officials.The error affected those who pay their premiums to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through Easy Pay (Automated Clearing House payments.) Officials say the premiums were deducted twice directly from beneficiary’s bank accounts.“They took out both my husband’s and my payment twice,” said Jacki Montierth.Montierth teaches tech seminars for seniors at Oasis Lifelong Learning Center in La Mesa, including about how to use their smartphones and computers to access financial and medical documents.She says, she closely monitors her account, but worries other people may not be as vigilant or even know how to check their statements.“I’m sure this will hurt many people on limited income and my bank says it may take a week to refund,” said Montierth.So far, officials say about 20% of the duplicated money has already been refunded. They said they are working to return the rest of the money by Wednesday, September 25.If the money has not been returned by then, Medicare officials claim the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Service will begin reversing the rest of transactions to complete the reimbursement.Those who worry they have been overcharged can call 1-800-MEDICARE to report an issue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont."The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom."I started screaming, said to call 911. I start CPR," said Maria.Finete was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brain dead a few days later. He was taken off life support on Saturday."We have no words to describe this. We don't understand why," said Maria.Finete, who had no known underlying conditions, tested positive for influenza B. Doctors told her the flu had spiked his blood sugar levels, and the combination of the flu and the high blood sugar levels caused him to collapse and stop breathing. "I never thought in my mind my kid would die from that," said a tearful Maria.She says her son had few symptoms. He had a lingering cough from a cold from last month. The night before he collapsed, he woke up in a sweat next to his girlfriend."When he sleeps he always sweats a little bit. He did tell her, 'I'm not feeling that good,'" said Maria.She says he didn't have a fever, took ibuprofen for a headache and seemed fine that Tuesday night. He was discovered hours later."Just so hard to see my baby gone. Don't know what to do without him," said Maria.Amid the grief: the pain of 'what ifs.' Her son decided not to get a flu shot this season, despite almost always getting it in the past."Take it. Take the flu shot if you can," said Maria. Tina Camacho remembers asking her daughter Cirena Artero, 16, about her day at school."We talked, and she said her day was okay," said Camacho.Cirena is one of Camacho's five children."Around 6:45 p.m., we thought she went to her room. Around 7:30 p.m., we knew she was missing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- For the second straight day, San Diego County has recorded over 400 new COVID-19 cases, health officials announced Saturday.The county is reporting 436 new cases Saturday, bringing the total to 12,837.Officials also reported only six communities outbreaks were identified in the past week which falls beneath the county's community outbreak trigger of seven in seven days.The number of recoveries reached 8,954, while the number of deaths increased by two raising the total to 360 for San Diego County.The deaths reported Saturday were of a woman and a man who died June 25 and their ages were in the early 70s and 80s, officials said. The man who died did not have underlying health conditions.Saturday marked the sixth time in seven days that health authorities reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on.
