(KGTV) - Students in one South Bay school district are surrounded by musical opportunities.Chula Vista Elementary School District was honored with the NAMM Foundation's "Best Communities for Music Education" designation this month, an honor that's given to school districts that show achievement in providing students access to music and education.“This award further validates our collective efforts to strengthen and enhance the arts as part of our broader goal to develop the ‘whole’ child,” CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo said. “There is ample evidence to support the connection between academic success and the arts."RELATED: Chula Vista officer receives Medal of Valor, Purple HeartIn CVESD, 86 teachers are part of the district's visual and performing arts plan, providing instruction in music, dance, theater, and media and visual arts.“Thanks to the support of our Board, District leaders, and organizations like the City of Chula Vista, we’ve been able to revitalize the arts across the District for all students," Lauren Shelton, the District’s Coordinator for VAPA, said.And the CVESD is continuing to strengthen its music offerings.According to the district,  20 CVESD schools will receive a VH1 Save the Music Foundation instrument grant by next year. 1342

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of fatally stabbing a man during a road-rage dispute in the South Bay is due in court for pre-trial motions Monday. Rickey Smith, 60, is accused of stabbing 36-year-old Horace Williams to death as Williams sat in his van. According to police, the incident happened on November 27, 2018 along Sweetwater Road. Witnesses told police Smith was following Williams’ van as the two yelled at each other. RELATED: Man accused of killing driver in South Bay road rage incident pleads not guiltySmith’s pickup then reportedly hit the van from behind before Smith pulled in front of the van, slamming on the brakes. Witnesses told police the maneuver caused the crash. Police say Smith then got out of his truck and stabbed Williams. Smith, a father of five who had just dropped several of his children off at school, died at the scene. (KGTV) - Parents in Chula Vista are horrified after finding out that dozens of children are taking part in what is being called an after-school fight club. Alain Tripp has lived across the street from Bonita Vista Middle School for more than a decade. Once the bell rings, he sees students walk along the canyon trail to go home. But lately, he has been noticing something else. “Every so often I see a group of 15-20 kids. They’ll be standing there and fighting,” Tripp said.Tripp is not the only one who has seen fighting just off campus.Other neighbors said they had witnessed dozens of kids running down the trail on minimum-day Fridays, to participate in organized fights at Discovery Park. One Bonita Vista Middle School student’s mother sent 10News a photo of what appears to be many students scattering after one of the so-called fights. Parents said the students then upload fight videos onto a secret Instagram account, seeking internet fame.“They just see a lot of people who are Youtube famous… A famous Youtuber popping up in their heads and stuff,” Tripp said. “I feel like every year, kids are trying to grow up faster.”Some neighbors told 10News that they have tried to stop the alleged fights, but they say these keep happening. Now, the school is stepping in. 10 News got a copy of the letter sent to parents from Bonita Vista Middle School Principal, Teresa Kramer. 1457

She also stopped by a sushi stand, making savory rice bowls with tempura shrimp. Next was South Bay Salsas, a beautiful blend of fresh, seasonal Mexican/American fusion. “Every week, it's a little different. Mangoes are fresh, sometimes a little more ripe. You take it like it is”, says South Bay Salsas owner Scott Strickland. Strickland and his wife have grown their booming Chula Vista business by adding to their seasonal selections. New to the farmers market this day was Frida’s street tacos. Owner Robert Ayala tried for 3 years to get a stand at the farmers market. Ayala says his first day was a great success. “Serving our people, our community, with our tacos," Ayala said.The love each of these vendors brings to their cooking comes through in every bite. It wouldn’t be a farmers market without farm to table produce. Remberto Cepera owns a produce stand, selling fresh fruit grown on his land. On this day, he has fresh picked prickly pears.“We picked these yesterday," Cepera said.The devotion to his craft is evident. He has seen these beautiful fruits through winter’s frost and summer’s heat. The taste is extraordinary.“It's delicious, and it's good for you," said Cepera. There is a lot more to this farmers market than the farm. There is something for people of all ages. You can take a trip back in time with bomber jackets or flashy disco jackets. A balloon artist delights children while their parents shop.“A lot of people come here for a good time with the family. Tons of great food, tons of great art” said Leo, a balloon artist who has lived in Chula Vista his whole life. He has performed at the farmers market for the past decade.
