SAN DIEGO (AP) — A son of one of the founders of the Sinaloa drug cartel has appeared in a U.S. court on trafficking and other charges after he was extradited from Mexico. A lawyer for Ismael "El Mayito Gordo" Zambada-Imperial says he pleaded not guilty to the charges in the federal court in San Diego and his next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 7. Zambada-Imperial is accused of smuggling large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico to the United States, as well as the laundering of profits from the illegal drug trade. He's now serving a life sentence in a federal prison in Colorado.Zambada Garcia is reportedly still at large, according to the FBI. 989

SAN DIEGO — When the pandemic hit, hundreds of people living in San Diego's bridge shelters moved into the convention center, where they could spread out. More than six months later, they're still there. And it's the site of a Coronavirus outbreak.This month, 115 people living in the convention center tested positive for the the virus, and have moved to county-supplied hotel rooms for isolation.The remainder of the roughly 800 residents continue to live on site, now a one-stop shop of services including meals, laundry and finding permanent housing.Bob McElroy's Alpha Project is one of the city contractors serving the shelter.“It saved hundreds of people's lives, we couldn't have operated in the close proximity that we were in with the bridge shelters and Golden Hall and other facilities so it saved lives and I can't put a cost on that,” McElroy said.But the cost is now coming under scrutiny.From April through December, the city budgeted million to the convention center shelter, though most of that is via federal and state funds dedicated to COVID or homelessness. The city is now spending .6 million per month to rent the convention center from its own nonprofit.The Union-Tribune reports that in November, the city spent 0 dollars per person per day for about 900 residents, totaling .7 million.Now with the new outbreak, a group is renewing calls to close the center and place the residents in county-secured hotels subsidized with federal money to stop the spread.“We could have kept several hotels open and the staff employed and put the money back into the local community,” said activist Shane Parmely.The county has secured 806 hotel rooms for people to isolate, about a third of which are currently occupied.In a statement, the city said it will continue to work closely with the county to ensure it is providing the best protection and medical care in accordance with public-health guidelines. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A Navy SEAL committed murder during a deployment to Iraq and the proof is in his own words, his own photos and the testimony of his fellow troops, a military prosecutor told a jury Monday.Cmdr. Jeff Pietrzyk said in closing arguments of a court-martial that text messages by Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher show he is guilty of fatally stabbing a wounded Islamic State prisoner on May 3, 2017.One message said: "I've got a cool story for you when I get back. I've got my knife skills on." Another text stated: "Good story behind this. Got him with my hunting knife."As he showed a photo of the dead prisoner with Gallagher holding up his head by the hair, the prosecutor said, "Those are his words."The prosecutor said one SEAL who changed his story and claimed to have killed the prisoner himself was lying to protect Gallagher."The government's evidence in this case is Chief Gallagher's words, Chief Gallagher's pictures, Chief Gallagher's SEALs," Pietrzyk said.The prosecutor said he wouldn't try to argue sympathy for the teenage prisoner, who had been wounded in an air strike."Before the air strike, he would have done anything in his power to kill an American," Pietrzyk said.But he said the prisoner was not a lawful target."We're not ISIS. When we capture someone and they're out of the fight, that's it. That's where the line is drawn," Pietrzyk said.Gallagher, 40, has pleaded not guilty to murder and allegations that he shot civilians and a violation involving posing with the corpse for photographs.Defense lawyer Tim Parlatore began his closing argument the same way he started the trial. "This is case is not about murder, it's about mutiny." Parlatore said.The attorney said there's no body, no forensics, and the SEALs who testified against Gallagher lied because they didn't like his demanding leadership.Parlatore also addressed the testimony of Special Operator Corey Scott, who said he saw Gallagher stab the prisoner in the neck but stunned the court when he said he was the one who ultimately killed the prisoner by plugging his breathing tube with his thumb as an act of mercy.The defense attorney contended that investigators never asked Scott about the cause of the death, which is why they were surprised by his testimony."They didn't even listen to their own witness," Parlatore said.A jury of five Marines and two sailors, one a SEAL, will weigh whether Gallagher, a 19-year veteran on his eighth deployment, went off the rails and fatally stabbed the war prisoner as a kind of trophy kill.During the trial, it was revealed that nearly all the platoon members readily posed for photos with the dead prisoner and watched as Gallagher read his reenlistment oath near the body in an impromptu ceremony.Nearly a dozen SEALs testified over two weeks. Most were granted immunity to protect them from being prosecuted for acts they described on the stand.Seven SEALs said Gallagher unexpectedly stabbed the prisoner, moments after he and the other medics treated the 17-year-old boy. Two, including Scott, testified they saw Gallagher plunge his knife into the prisoner's neck.An Iraqi general who handed the wounded prisoner to the SEALs testified that Gallagher did not stab the boy. And Marine Staff Sgt. Giorgio Kirylo said after the militant died that he moved the body to take a "cool guy trophy" photo with it and saw no stab wounds on his neck.Lt. Jacob Portier, the officer in charge, has been charged separately for overseeing the reenlistment ceremony and not reporting the alleged stabbing. 3561

San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. The goal is to bring in even more events, including concerts, soccer games, weddings, birthday parties, fireworks, corporate softball, seminars and team building.  Its four key objectives are: Introduce, build and increase awareness of SDCCU StadiumPromote and Increase awareness and attendance of evnets atking place at SDCCU StadiumPosition SDCCU Stadium as the most desired venue in the city of San Diego host any and all types of eventsDrive additional revenue to the stadium. Isidro Cardenas, who enjoyed the tailgate scene at charger games, says he'd like more activity at the stadium “I’d like to see it used for the local sport avenue here in our San Diego County,” he said. “Whatever we can do to help along, so now that the Chargers are gone bring in more colleges to play there. The proposal also says the credit union would install five ATMs on site.The City Council will consider the plan at its meeting Tuesday.  A spokeswoman for the credit union said more details would be released if the city council approves the naming rights plan.   1810

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — The California Medical Board is looking into a case where a San Diego doctor is accused of using dirty needles on pediatric patients. Newly released documents by the California Medical board states Dr. Bret Robert Gerber used dirty syringes on a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old in July 2016. At the time, Dr. Gerber worked at Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Hillcrest. The documents state a medical assistant reported seeing the doctor bring in two boxes of unauthorized needles from home. Upon closer review, she noticed that the syringes had expired in 2008, and the boxes contained dead insects and what looked to be rodent droppings. Three years before this alleged incident, Dr. Gerber was arrested by Mono County Sheriff's deputies for having psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, and ecstasy. Deputies found the drugs inside his Winnebago during a traffic stop as the doctor was on his way to the Burning Man Festival. He later admitted to using ecstasy at the festival.Instead of court, Dr. Gerber went through a diversion program and the Medical Board put him on probation. However, in March 2018, documents showed Gerber violated his probation after failing to provide a bodily fluids sample for a drug test. Despite his prior offenses, Dr. Gerber’s medical license was never revoked. Dr. Gerber continues to practice pediatric medicine twice a week, most recently at Mid-City Community Clinic in City Heights. 10News contacted the California Medical Board for comment. Officials said Dr. Gerber now faces multiple charges including gross negligence, repeated negligent acts, failure to maintain accurate medical records, and unprofessional conduct. 1688
