BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Friday voiced concern over and strong dissatisfaction with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent remarks concerning China's Diaoyu Islands."The Chinese government and people will never accept any word or deed that includes the Diaoyu Islands within the scope of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu.After her meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara in Hawaii Thursday, Clinton said the Diaoyu Islands fall within the scope of the U.S.-Japan security treaty."The Diaoyu Islands have been an integral part of Chinese territory since ancient times. China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands," Ma said.As a bilateral agreement reached during the Cold War, the U.S.-Japan security treaty should not harm the interests of third parities, including China, the spokesman said.He urged the United States and Japan to do more to boost regional peace and stability.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday met with nearly 60 foreign political leaders and scholars on the eve of a forum to discuss global trends and common challenges.The forum will take place in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday and is organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),the country's top advisory body.The forum's theme for its fourth conference is "new era, new challenges, new vision -- building a future for all.""It is significant for the 21st Century Forum to hold a conference on the global situation, challenges and visions," Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said.More than 100 officials, scholars and business executives from home and abroad will attend the two-day conference of the 21st Century Forum.As the world has been undergoing deep changes, transformation and adjustment, it is imperative for all countries to be interdependent, reform the international financial system and build a justifiable and reasonable world order, Jia told the foreign attendees to the forum.Among the foreign attendees are some well-known dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.Jia briefed foreign leaders on China's economic and social development, stressing China remained the world's biggest developing country despite its economic boom."It will take China decades of unremitting efforts to accomplish modernization," Jia said, adding China would adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Jia said China would continue to pursue peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all countries in accordance with its independent foreign policy.Jia reaffirmed China's efforts to play its due part in dealing with global challenges and contributing to world peace and development.Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all countries to pursue a path of cooperation and common prosperity.After the meeting, Jia also hosted a welcome banquet for forum attendees.The 21st Century Forum convened its first conference in 1996. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said on Monday it would levy provisional anti-dumping duties of up to 37.5 percent on methanol imported from Indonesia, Malaysia and New Zealand.After a preliminary investigation, the MOC found the three countries had dumped methanol onto the market, causing material damage to Chinese manufacturers.The MOC has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties ranging between 9.3 percent and 37.5 percent effective Oct. 28, according to a news release on its website.The MOC also concluded its investigation into imports from Saudi Arabia, though no evidence of dumping was found.Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, is used as a basic material to produce chemical products such as plastics, paint, construction materials and windshield cleaning fluid.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China launched an association on Monday to evaluate the quality of the nation's higher education."The association, as a non-government organization, is designed to evaluate and supervise the quality of higher education," said Lin Huiqing, an official with the Ministry of Education, at the launching ceremony held in Beijing.The association is composed of over 200 educational institutions as members, including the Higher Education Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Educational Evaluation Institute, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, and others.China's higher education has been blamed for a decline in quality since 1999 when the government started to expand college enrollment."Therefore, we should establish a nation-wide network to evaluate the teaching methods, development of each discipline and curriculum designs of each school," Lin said.According to Ji Ping, a senior official in charge of the evaluation of educational quality with the Ministry of Education, China started to implement higher education quality evaluations in the 1980s, and decided to carry out evaluation once every five years since 2003."It is time for us to start a new round of higher education evaluations," Ji said, noting that the priority of China's higher education is to improve its quality."We have required the local schools to make regular evaluations themselves, and invite experts to carry out independent assessments," Ji said.

DOHA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Qatar's Prime Minister said Monday that Qatar attaches great importance to its relations with China and hopes the two countries' media could enhance cooperation as part of the efforts to bring bilateral ties to a new high.Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir al-Thani made the remarks during a meeting with He Ping, editor-in-chief of China's official Xinhua News Agency.Sheikh Hamad said Qatar and China share mutual interests in many aspects and bilateral cooperation in such fields as politics and economy have made remarkable headway in the past years.The prime minister expressed the hope that the two countries' media could play their due role in the development of bilateral relations.For his part, He Ping said China and Qatar have enjoyed ever- deepening relations in the past years driven by efforts from the two countries leaders.He said Xinhua would join hands with Qatari media to tap new channels in cooperation to deepen the understanding and friendship between the two peoples.He is heading a delegation in Qatar for a two-day visit to the Gulf state.
