MINNEAPOLIS — A truck driver who drove into a large crowd of protesters on a bridge in Minneapolis following the killing of George Floyd has been charged with two criminal counts.Prosecutors charged 35-year-old Bogdan Vechirko, of Otsego, Minnesota, on Thursday with making threats of violence and criminal vehicular operation.On May 31, Vechirko drove his fuel tanker truck through a crowd of protesters who had shut down a bridge on I-35 in Minneapolis. Even though thousands of pedestrians were on the bridge, Vechirko continued to pull forward.Video from the incident shows that one protester stumbled near the truck, and that's when Vechirko says stopped out of caution. Protesters then attacked him and vandalized his truck.The Star Tribune reports that the charges allege he sought to "scare" protesters out of his path. In addition, the charges also allege a re-enactment with a similar truck showed he would have had plenty of time to stop after seeing the crowd on the highway.Vechirko claimed he was returning from a fuel delivery south of the city and didn't mean to drive through the protests. He also claims that he wouldn't have been able to immediately stop the truck ahead of the crowd without the use of a handbrake that could have caused it to jackknife and cause further injuries. 1308

More travelers are being deceived every year by third-party travel sites disguised as dream destinations.Hotel booking fraud is a growing problem — 1-in-4 American travelers say they've been duped.Molly Fay says one of these sites took advantage of her. She booked a dream vacation last year to wine country. In the interest of full disclosure, Fay works at Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee, the station that originally broke this story."I thought I was booking directly with the resort," Fay said.   She searched the web for the name of a California Inn and clicked on the website to reserve a room,."(It) absolutely looked like the property's website with the picture, their name top line and didn't have mention at that time of the booking service," Fay said. She actually booked through a third-party website, something Fay realized when the confirmation email came through.A few months before the trip, Fay had to cancel.  She was hoping to get some money back."I thought maybe the resort will make an exception or work with me. Maybe give me half of my money back," she said. The third-party website told Fay it was checking with the owner about her request.  "They got back to me immediately and said 'the owners of this property said they will make no exception for you," she said. Fay said she later discovered the site never actually made contact with the inn. The number of travelers duped by third-party websites is growing, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association.  In 2015 only 6 percent of vacationers reported being a victim. In 2017, it was 22 percent.    Many result in bad bookings.  People are charged hidden fees, they don't get the accommodations promised, or reservations are lost.It's one of the reasons some people are trending back to travel agents.  "They do like to know they have that security," Holly Faith, with Fox World Travel Brookfield, told us.  With so many choices, and the pitfalls of online booking, they're seeing more travelers book through the agency."They get very overwhelmed. So they do come back kind of full circle now, to our advice," Faith said. There has been some oversight by the federal government. The FTC recently filed a complaint against a company that sells hotel reservations through third-party websites. It found the defendants engaged in "deceptive acts and practices" creating the impression consumers are booking rooms directly through the advertised hotel.  Fay was able to get some of her money back by bypassing the booking site and reaching out to the general manager at the California inn directly. Now, Fay says she's more careful when making a reservation.      There is federal legislation in the works called the Stop Online Booking Scams Act. It would require all third-party websites disclose they are not affiliated with hotels. The bill would also give state Attorneys General the ability to go after violators in federal court. right now only federal authorities can pursue charges.Some key things to look for so you don't fall into a scheme: Many of these third-party sites use the hotel name in the link. If the website doesn't have a locked symbol or an "https" in the web address don't do business there.RESOURCES:  3370

Mobs of kangaroos have been raiding patches of grass in the Australian capital Canberra, driven to the city's sports fields, back yards and roadsides by food scarcity.Canberra residents have taken to social media with images of the jumping marsupials exploring outside their usual habitats. But beyond the cute photo opportunities, the hungry kangaroos are at risk of dying on the roads as their feeding times coincide with rush hour.Canberra has more than 30 nature reserves, with most hosting hundreds of Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and it is not unusual to see them in the reserves or in roads or yards nearby, Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Parks and Conservation Service Director Daniel Iglesias told CNN.But he said this winter the animals were far more visible."Canberra is experiencing a perfect storm of hardship for its kangaroos. New records have been set in Canberra for very cold, frosty nights this winter. This, coupled with very dry conditions with very little rain at all in June and July, means there is very little food for kangaroos, " Iglesias said, via email."Sports ovals, suburban yards, schoolyards and roadsides are the few places offering any green grass at all in Canberra at the moment and they act as magnets for kangaroos," he said.Driving in areas with large populations of kangaroos is ill-advised during the animals' dawn and dusk feeding times as they can jump in front of moving vehicles without warning. Mysterious packages are popping up on Medicare recipients’ doorsteps and the Federal Trade Commission said it’s part of a rising scam."That’s a back brace,” Anna Miller, a 94-year-old Medicare recipient said as she rifled through a package delivered to her home.Inside the box was a back brace, shoulder brace, and a couple of other pieces of medical equipment, the items came bundled together in a box addressed to Miller."They must have thought I was in bad shape to send me both of them in one box,” Miller joked.She said she never ordered any kind of medical device."I thought it was terrible because I figured it was false,” Miller said.As it turns out, her Medicare account got charged for the back and shoulder brace. It’s a scam the FTC said is on the rise targeting Medicare dollars and personal information.Miller reached out to Medicare to see what was going on. "They just said they'd look into it and they questioned me,” she said.Medicare followed up, sending a letter confirming an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the FTC is warning Medicare recipients to be aware.If someone calls and says they're with Medicare and offers you a “free” or “low cost” brace, hang up right away.Medicare will never call you with such an offer. Never give your Medicare or other personal information over the phone to anyone.If you do need a brace or medical equipment, talk to your doctor. Sellers on the phone don’t know what you need.Lastly, don't accept medical equipment you get in the mail unless you or your doctor ordered it.
