They tested a group of 8 children and measured spinal pressure at three different amounts of backpack weight meant to mimic 10, 20, and 30 percent of their weight.They found that as the weight of the backpack load increases, back pain in children increases and spinal disc height shrinks as lumbar asymmetry grows.Which brings us back to the original question: How do you make sure a backpack is right for a child? Shoulder straps should be wide and padded to help distribute the pack's weight evenly, according to the website Healthy Children. Abdominal straps also help distribute weight across the waist, hips, and back.It's also recommended not to wear backpacks on only one shoulder, which shifts all that weight and leads to neck and back pain.Wearing it rightThe top of a backpack should sit one to two inches below the top of the shoulders. Also, the pack should not sit more than four inches below the waistline.The bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back.Preventing injury on the goWhile at school, its important for kids to be careful while lugging around their backpack. If possible, students should stop by their lockers often to unload any unneeded gear from their backpack. If bending down, kids should use both of their knees while wearing a backpack and not bend at the waist.Learning back-strengthening exercises can also help build up muscles primarily used while carrying weight.Consult a pediatrician if necessaryTalking with your child's doctor about back health is vital. (KGTV) - An earthquake struck northern Mexico’s Baja California peninsula Monday, causing tremors felt in San Diego County.The 4.8 quake was located near Alberto Oviedo Mota at 12:18 p.m.The initial quake was followed by a 3.3 aftershock in the same area seven minutes later.Alberto Oviedo Mota is roughly 160 miles from San Diego. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the shaking in San Diego County was in the II-III or IV categories, meaning weak to light. The strongest shaking reported in the U.S. was in El Centro, which was considered moderate.There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. 626

(KGTV) — A family forced to flee Paradise, Calif., because of the Camp Fire finally returned home after nearly a month this week to find their faithful canine had survived and guarding their charred property.Andrea Gaylord was evacuated on Nov. 8 but only allowed back to her property Wednesday, according to group K9 Paw Print Rescue. Her property had burned in the fire. During the evacuation, Gaylord was unable to get to her dog, Madison, before the flames had spread through the town and forced her out, according to the rescue group.Animal rescuer, Shayla Sullivan, responded to Gaylord's request to check on Madison, first spotting the Anatolian shepherd just days after the fire began. Madison, however, kept his distance, according to Sullivan, who was already in the area searching for other lost pets.Sullivan decided to leave food and water regularly at the property for Madison until Gaylord was able to return, the animal group wrote.As Gaylord pulled up Wednesday, there sat Madison — being a very good boy."He had stayed to protect what was left of his home, and never gave up on his people!
