And the 200 heroes were finally picked out from 300 candidates.     "The heroes, despite their differences in historical time and post, share many things in common, such as loyalty to the country, love for the people and selfless devotion," Li said.     These were spiritual treasures formed in the great history of Chinese revolution, construction and reform led by the Party, he said.     Li called on the whole nation to learn from these heroes and pass down their moving stories and lofty spirit to generations to come.     "Their noble spirit should be a lasting inspiration for the people to make new achievements," said Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, who presided over the symposium.     Delegates like Li Yazhong, a descendent of Li Dazhao (1888-1927), one of the main founders of the CPC, and Zhang Yunquan, an official with the Bureau for Letters and Calls in eastern Jiangsu Province, gave speeches at the symposium.

PYONGYANG, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), met with Dai Bingguo, Chinese state councilor and special envoy of Chinese President Hu Jintao, here Thursday to discuss relations between their two countries.     Kim asked Dai to convey his greetings to his Chinese counterpart, Wu Bangguo, and offered congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Kim expressed his wish that the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, will continue the country's modernization drive.     Kim reiterated that it is the unshakable stand of the Worker's Party of Korea and the DPRK government to consolidate and further promote the traditional DPRK-China friendship.     He said the DPRK side would work with the Chinese side to push forward DPRK-China relations.     Dai conveyed Wu Bangguo's greetings, saying the Chinese government and the Chinese people treasured the friendship with the DPRK, and would strengthen the exchange and cooperation with the DPRK side to write together a new chapter of the friendship.     This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and has been named the Year of China-DPRK Friendship.     After the meeting, Dai and Kim watched the debut of the opera, "The Dream of the Red Chamber" at the Pyongyang Grand Theater. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's power consumption in September continued to rise with a faster increasing rate, according to China's National Energy Administration (NEA) on Thursday.     Power consumption in September rose 10.24 percent from the same month last year to 322.41 billion kilowatt hours last month. The increasing rate was 2 percentage points up from that of August.     Accumulative power consumption in the first nine months topped 2.66 trillion kilowatt hours, an increase of 1.4 percent over the same period last year.     In the first three quarters, power consumption of the primary industry which covers agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery, added 6.35 percent from a year earlier to 72.5 billion kilowatt hours.     The second industry, including mining, manufactural, building and construction sectors, consumed 1.95 trillion kilowatt hours, representing a decrease of 1.67 percent over the same period last year.     Power consumption in the service sector climbed 11.26 percent year on year to 293.5 billion kilowatt hours in the first three quarters.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tire producers, who are facing proposed sanctionative tariffs from the U.S. authorities, appeal for "fair ruling" from the U.S. government, a Chinese tire industry representatives told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday.     "The proposed sanction against Chinese tire export to the U.S. market will cause a lose-lose situation on both countries," said Mary Xu, deputy secretary general of the China Rubber Industry Association and the leading member of a Chinese tire producers delegation in Washington.     "We have filed much evidence demonstrating that Chinese tire imports do not injure the U.S. tire industry. The restriction of the Chinese tires cannot solve any problem faced by the U.S. tire industry, and further would hurt U.S. tire distributors and consumers," the delegation said in a letter to the U.S. President Barack Obama before a government hearing on this issue on Friday.     The U.S. Steelworkers union, which represents workers at major U.S. tire manufacturers, filed a petition against China earlier this year for import relief and won a favorable ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).     The panel recommended Obama impose a 55 percent tariff on the Chinese tire imports which would be reduced to 45 percent in the second year and 35 percent in the third before being removed.     The steelworkers asked for protection under Section 421 of U.S. trade law, which only requires petitioners to show that imports from China have disrupted the U.S. market.     "Chinese tires are welcomed by the American consumers who believe that our products have good cost performance," Xu said. "Chinese tires are relatively lower ended and mainly for the replacement of tires. The U.S. tire makers do not produce these types of tires. So our tires are complementary, not competitive to the U.S. products."     Xu said that the tariffs will hurt the American consumers and cause job loss as well.     "This case will influence about 100,000 U.S. employees across the country, including tire sellers, distributors, transporters and logistic companies. More than 25,000 American workers may lose their jobs if the sanction is implemented," Xu said.     "And about 100,000 Chinese workers from 20 tire producers will be influenced by the case," she added.     The ITC said it submitted its investigation report to President Obama and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Ron Kirk last month.     The USTR hearing would be the final event in the investigation before Obama rules on the ITC recommendation.     The USTR will submit its remedy recommendation to Obama by September 2. He is required to make a decision within 15 days after receiving it.     Xu said that the tariffs proposal are widely opposed by the U.S. consumers and tire distributors.     In a letter to President Obama, the American Tire Industry Association (TIA) opposed petition to limit imports of Chinese-made tires and said that it will hurt the U.S. economy and consumers.     This case also aroused closely watch of trade protectionism since it is seen as a test case for the Obama administration's trade policy.     The president's decision will tell the world if he believes his own rhetoric about the dangers of protectionism in a weak global economy, The Wall Street Journal said in a report Tuesday.     "Chinese tires have fairly traded in the U.S. for years. I think limiting trade in fairly traded goods is protectionism. It would contradict recent pledges by the United States to avoid protectionism and to work in cooperation with China to promote trade," said Xu.     "We cannot predict the result of the case right now," Xu said. "What we expect is a fair ruling from the U.S. government."

CHANGCHUN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged more efforts to ensure grain production and improve rural livelihoods to ensure fast and steady rural development.     Hui made the remark at an agricultural products fair in Changchun, capital of the northeastern Jilin Province on Tuesday, saying the government will continue to see maintaining a fast and steady rural economic development as a top task.     He called for promotion of agricultural technology and products to increase the competitiveness of China's agricultural enterprises and their products in the global market.     "The overall situation about the country's agriculture and rural development is good, and China has seen a summer grain output growth for six straight years this year", he said.     He also urged more efforts to fight drought in parts of China and "try every means" to ensure harvest this fall and a continuous rise in farmers' income.     As of Sept. 8, a severe drought has affected 19.72 million mu (1.31 million hectares) of crops in seven provinces of Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     About 2.75 million people and about 1.20 million livestock had difficulties getting adequate water supply.
