However, with the average rent for an apartment around ,000 and the cost to purchase a home around 0,000, America’s finest city loses some of its appeal.“Everybody said you’re set with your life,” Chris Allen explains.Allen is a former Navy rescue diver, swim coach, a husband, and a dog dad who fell on hard times because of a bad motorcycle accident.“I had like a 9 percent chance to live,” Allen said.This accident forced him out of work for six months, so he started living in his van. He ended up converting his van to include a fridge, a fold out bed, lighting and uses a bucket with kitty litter for the restroom. Now a year later, he’s embraced van life and says it provides a chance to travel and save money.“It’s more freedom, but at the same time it’s more responsibility,” Allen said.Allen isn’t alone. During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. Breanne Acio runs SD Camper Vans and converts vans for people looking for life on wheels. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- USO San Diego received a 0,000 grant that has expanded several food and nutrition programs to support military families across the country who have been impacted by the pandemic. The gift was provided by The San Diego Foundation COVID-19 Community Response Fund, in large part due to funding from San Diego Gas and Electric, said the non-profit in a release."Immediately following the stay-at-home order in our county, USO San Diego recognized the importance of sustaining our food distributions," said Ashley Camac, USO San Diego's Executive Director. "We wanted our military families to be confident the resources they depended upon would remain accessible."The resources mentioned include grab-and-go bags of non-perishable items, a Thanksgiving meal kit giveaway, mobile farmers markets, and healthy breakfast options for military children participating in distance learning.Currently, SDG&E has donated .5 million to the San Diego Foundation COVID-19 Community Response Fund. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. They had letters from Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote. In a statement Friday, Port Chairman Gary Bonelli said there were a number of issues with the proposal."No one on the Committee questioned the importance of the proposed WWII Military Liberation Monument, but Committee members felt that this particular proposal neither inspired nor caused one to contemplate the subject matter," Bonelli said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego and the San Diego Police Department are investigating a series of incidents where a man reportedly exposed himself several times so far this year. According to the university, from January through March of 2019, there have been at least six reports of a man who appears to be jogging in the University City area when he reportedly exposed his genitals to women. During all the reported incidents, the suspect ran up to female victim and exposed himself before running away. San Diego Police detectives are still investigating the patterns of the six incidents. But Lt. Justin Scott told 10News, most of the incidents happened during the last afternoon/early evening hours in the UTC South area.The man is described as a white or Hispanic man in his 20s or 30s, approximately 5’ 5” to 5’ 10” tall with a beard in most of the incidents. The suspect has been seen wearing black or gray running shorts and a green or black hoodie pulled up. None of the incidents happened on the UC San Diego campus, but some of the victims were students, police said. The university says anyone who has been sexually assaulted or subject to other forms of sexual misconduct or harassment should report the incident to university officials and San Diego Police Northern Division. 1298
