SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- 10news continues the discussion of climate change ahead of next week's United Nations Climate Summit, with a focus on something San Diegans know all too well: wildfires.Climate change is increasing temperatures and decreasing precipitation which is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme fire events."It’s predicted that the total area burned will increase by 50% or even as high as 100% over the coming century. We’re going to see more fires, and more dangerous fires and more deadly fires, " says Tom Corringham, a post-doctoral research economist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD.Climate Central analyzed 45 years of U.S. Forest Service records of large wildfires and found there are three times more major wildfires burning across the west each year than in the 1970s. The annual area burned has increased six-fold with wildfire season lasting an average of 105 days longer, research showed.RELATED: Climate Change: Living in a warming worldIn California, there have been more large fires, burning more acres, particularly in warmer years. In Southern California we’re already seeing the move to a year-round wildfire season."What we are seeing is that climate change is getting worse and it’s accelerating at a pace that is greater than we were expecting," Corringham said.Temperatures correlate with large wildfires. Forests are more vulnerable during droughts but even wet winters can spur growth of grasses and shrubs which dry out on warmer days and add available fuel."With unmitigated climate change we are likely going to see wildfires burning later in the season, specifically into December which is the peak of the Santa Ana wind season. That’s when you’re likely to get back-to-back Santa Ana winds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 36-year-old man riding an electric scooter suffered severe head injuries when he collided with an SUV at an intersection near Liberty Station.According to San Diego police, the crash was reported around 10:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Byron and Rosecrans streets in Point Loma.Investigators determined the man was riding an electric scooter westbound on Byron Street when he traveled through a red light at the intersection, directly into the path of a Volvo SUV driven by a 20-year-old woman.The victim was taken to a hospital with multiple facial fractures, which Police say are life-threatening.The Volvo driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.Drugs or alcohol were not a factor for the Volvo driver, but Police say the scooter rider was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. 861

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bluff that overlooks Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas is on the brink of collapsing, which could mean changes for the walking trail that leads visitors down to the beach. The City of Encinitas says the bluff is at risk. There is a low-lying failure and the bluff could fall, taking the walking trail with it.“We’ve been told by our experts that there is a chance that the slide could happen at any time,”says Brenda Wisneski, Developmental Services Director for the City of Encinitas. Visitors at Beacon’s Beach say they feel the walking trail makes the beach different from others. “It’s one of my favorite beaches in all of San Diego. A part of that is because of the access, this trail is highly unique and it's not stairs,” says Mark Tayer. The city has a proposal to add a staircase south of the entry to the trail.“That is the most safe, the most secure. It requires a minimal amount of stability at the base of it,” says Wisneski.Wisneski says the city also has plans to move the parking lot back from the failure area. This could mean fewer parking spaces for visitors. The city hopes to begin construction in the fall of 2019. The proposal will go to the planning commission next. The trail will stay there until it poses a safety issue to visitors. On Wednesday, the City of Encinitas will have an open house where members of the community can voice their concerns. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two men were wounded when another man opened fire from the passenger's seat of a vehicle on a street in the Encanto neighborhood, police said Tuesday.It happened around 10:10 p.m. Monday on Klauber Avenue near Attix Street, west of 69th Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 25-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were standing outside their home when a woman drove up in a vehicle, described as a black or white BMW, with a man in the front passenger's seat, Buttle said.The man in the passenger's seat, believed to be in his late 20s, fired at least seven shots and the younger man was struck four times in the stomach while the older man was struck in a buttock and a leg, the officer said.Family members started to transport the victims to a hospital, but they were stopped by police, then paramedics took the victims to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available. 1029

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A closer look at some of the photos shown to President Trump while he toured the border wall prototypes reveal what the U.S.-Mexico border looked like in the 1980s.Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott told Trump during the tour what the border in San Diego was like in the 80s.Scott said once the double fence was built, the U.S. was able to better secure the border.
