JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - The Granite Lion Cellars in Jamul will break ground Wednesday on a new tasting room and wine cave, adding to their expanding vineyard and winery in the East County."We've been waiting for this for quite a while," says Tasting Room Manager Miriam Valdez. "I"m over the moon that it's finally happening."The multi-million dollar expansion will help Granite Lion deal with the increase of customers they've seen over the past year. Sommelier David Whited says they've gone from about ten visitors each week to 150.It's an excellent problem to have, and one that is spreading up and down Highway 94. "You can do it here, 20 minutes from downtown."The new wine cave and tasting room are the latest sign that the region is gaining in popularity. The first tasting room in the area opened in 2014. Since then, wines along the 94 have won several awards and are starting to pull customers away from Temecula, Ramona and even Baja."As word gets out, people are coming here," says Whited."You arrive, and it's quiet," says Valdez. "It's away from the busy hustle and bustle of the city. You can enjoy nature. You can find a place here to rejuvenate and relax."The San Diego County Vinters Association says there are 116 wineries across the county. A recent report showed they have a million economic impact every year.Whited says the geography in the East County allows vineyards to grow more flavorful grapes commonly found in Europe."There are two mountain ranges that filter in the marine climate into the valley here which sets us apart from anywhere else in San Diego," he says.County Supervisor Diane Jacob is expected to attend Wednesday's event. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Emergency crews met a Frontier Airlines plane on the runway Tuesday afternoon at KCI after the plane’s pilots reported landing gear problems.The pilots of Frontier Airlines Flight 821 from Philadelphia to Kansas City were on approach to KCI around 5:15 p.m. when they radioed into air traffic controllers about a landing gear problem. The plane did a flyby of the airport before circling back and making another try.Just before 6 p.m., the plane landed without incident at KCI.Emergency crews quickly evaluated the plane on the runway before the plane proceeded to the terminal.The plane was an Airbus A321. 639
Just weeks after the fall term began, the California State University (CSU) system announced most classes across its 23 campuses would remain virtual throughout the spring term.In a letter to the campus community, Chancellor Timothy P. White notes health as one factor."We know far more about it [the pandemic] now than we did back in May. The virus continues to spread. There is no vaccine and there likely will not be one widely available any time soon. The summer increase in infections that was forecast in the spring happened as predicted, and it was larger than expected."White says the decision will also provide faculty and staff more time to better prepare for a virtual learning environment. “I wasn’t that surprised because the virus doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon and the conditions for spring look like the conditions for fall, so from a public health perspective it makes sense," said Robert Kelchen, an associate professor of higher education at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.Kelchen has been tracking reopening plans across the country."The advantage of deciding early is colleges have a lot of time to prepare classes the way they want to be fully online and get it the best they can be," said Kelchen. But as colleges face massive financial hits while struggling to maintain enrollment, Kelchen says it’s unlikely other colleges will solidify spring plans this soon.“CSU isn’t as concerned about losing students to other colleges because there’s lots of demand to go to CSU; it’s not like some of the colleges, say in the northeast and Midwest, that are really concerned about having enough students. They’re in a position of strength," said Kelchen. Kelchen says small private colleges will struggle to survive the pandemic.“If the fall is any indication, there will be some colleges that will try to come back in person and then fail spectacularly right before or right at the beginning of the term," said Kelchen. A CSU spokesperson says dating back to March, they estimate about 0 million in forgone or returned revenue and unexpected costs across the 23 campuses. I loved the school, I loved the professors, I loved the people," said Kelsey Santin, a transfer student at San Diego State University.After losing access to resources like the library and health center, Santin started a petition calling for reduced fees and tuition.“The quality is severely diminished. And that’s not to say the professors aren’t doing their best, it's just, you can’t expect to take the way that education has been worked for years and completely change it and just expect it to go without a hitch," said Santin. “We understand why the education needed to change, why the style had to change. But we don’t understand if the product changed, why wouldn’t the price change as well?"After losing her job during the pandemic, Santin decided to move home to the Bay Area to do her online classes. Her petition has nearly 5,000 signatures and counting. “I was hoping just to kind of get a coalition formed and maybe start a class action lawsuit in some way, shape or form, but I definitely want to get some momentum going before that,” said Santin. The law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner says over 250 refund-related lawsuits are pending by university students across the country. But Christopher Schmidt, a class action lawyer at the firm, says it will be difficult for students to win these legal battles. Just over 1 million people filed new jobless claims last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s latest report released Thursday. Another 14.5 million people filed continuing claims, leaving unemployment in the U.S. still startlingly high.Amid high unemployment across the country, a new report is showing executive compensation is growing as CEOs continue to cut millions of jobs.“We find that a CEO now earns about 320 times that of a typical worker in their main industry,” said Lawrence Mishel, a labor economist and distinguished fellow at the Economic Policy Institute, an independent think tank in Washington D.C.Mishel just authored a report analyzing CEO compensation. That report shows how in March and April when some CEOs were reported to have cut their salaries during the economic downturn, it wasn’t as big of a sacrifice as it seemed.“Salaries make up about 5 percent of CEO compensation packages,” explained Mishel. “And it seems like when CEOs say they are making a sacrifice, it’s really, I think, is better for press releases than in that they are actually going to take a cut in their standard of living.”The report shows how CEO compensation growth is affecting workers everywhere.“If you look at CEO compensation since, back over the last four decades since 1978, CEO compensation grew 1,167 percent,” said Mishel. “The compensation of a typical worker grew 13 to 14 percent over that period.”The report shows CEO compensation increased by 14 percent just last year and is set to continue to go up this year, even in a recession with companies having to let go of millions of workers.“The wages of the vast majority, the bottom 90 percent, has grown only half as fast as it otherwise would have had the top 1 percent not really expanded like it did,” Mishel explained.Essentially the “profit pie” has not grown proportionate to CEO compensation growth. So, as CEOs are getting significantly higher compensation, it is taking from the pay other workers.“I think this is a problem of corporate governance and our tax policies, and it needs to be addressed,” said Mishel.Proposed solutions include capping CEO compensation and taxing anything above the cap. EPI also suggests allowing shareholders and company workers to directly have a say in their CEOs' pay. However, both solutions are as controversial as the problem. 2359
