SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials responded Monday to the arrival at San Diego’s U.S.-Mexico border of the first group of migrants from the caravan moving through Mexico. Some 85 people associated with the LGBTQ+ community are near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to journalist Jorge Nieto. While the majority of the migrants remain in Central Mexico, the Tijuana group left the others behind because they felt they were being discriminated against, Nieto said.“As the San Ysidro port of entry is at capacity, we anticipate that those individuals will continue to wait in Mexico until CBP is able to take them in to begin processing them, as we already have a number of individuals waiting to be processed,” a CBP spokesperson said Monday.RELATED: Interactive Map: Migrant caravan journeys to U.S.-Mexico border / Timeline: Migrant caravan travels to border / Photos: Migrant caravan makes its way to border“When our ports of entry reach capacity, when their ability to manage all of their missions — counter-narcotics, national security, facilitation of lawful trade — is challenged by the time and the space to process people that are arriving without documents, from time to time we have to manage the queues and address that processing based on that capacity.”CBP officials said the number of inadmissible individuals it can process varies based upon the complexity of the case, available resources, medical needs, translation requirements, holding and detention space, overall port volume, and ongoing enforcement actions.“No one is being denied the opportunity to make a claim of credible fear or seek asylum,” said the CBP.RELATED: First group of migrants arrives in TijuanaOfficials said the agency allows more people into its facilities for processing once space becomes available. Members of the migrant caravan may need to wait in Mexico as officers process others already in their facilities. The LGBTQ+ group took buses to Tijuana and is currently living at an Airbnb in Playas de Tijuana, funded by U.S. lawyers for the group. It is not clear when the group will attempt to seek asylum in the United States. 2169

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members are calling for a San Diego County Sheriff's deputy to be removed from duty. They claim he roughed up a local woman during a traffic stop on Oct. 1."I'm afraid for my life," said Shynita Phillips Abu. "I'm afraid to be targeted again, and I don't feel good at all."Standing outside the main building of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Shynita Phillips Abu described a violent encounter with a deputy.ABC 10News is not naming the alleged deputy involved at this point in the department's investigation.Abu said she was pulled over on CA 67 shortly after leaving the Lakeside Post Office."He came up to my window, and I rolled my window down, and he told me I'm pulling you over because you have a third brake light out," Abu said. "I asked the officer, what is a third brake light? I've never heard of a third brake light before, and I did inform him that everything works on my vehicle."Abu said her phone rang during their brief conversation."I got a phone call from the guy from the post office, and that's when the deputy went belligerent," she said. "He started to yell, ‘Get off the phone, put the phone down now.’"She said the deputy moved from the passenger's side to the driver's side of her vehicle and tried to get in."I'm asking him why are you arresting me," Abu said. "He said on video that I was not under arrest and I continued to record, and my husband called me and he (the deputy) told me stop calling people, stop calling people.”Abu continued to describe a chaotic situation. She said the deputy slapped her cell phone to the ground and got her out of her car."He pulled me by my hair and yanked me out of my car by force," she said. "At this point, he already had my arm. I have bruises all over my arm from his holding my arm so hard."Abu said she was handcuffed and put in the back of a car for hours, while she was taken from one facility to another. She said first they went to Las Colinas Detention facility, but she was rejected, then deputies took her to a hospital, and eventually they returned to Las Colinas.Abu said after about six hours, she was just released at a trolley stop and not charged with a crime.ABC 10News asked the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for the deputy's body camera recording. A spokesperson said they aren’t releasing it at this time.In an email, the department spokesperson said, "We are aware of the incident and have initiated an investigation into the matter. We do not want to come to any conclusions until we have all of the facts."When asked about the investigation and the deputy's status with the department, the spokesperson added, "His status remains unchanged."Following the press conference Monday, Abu walked into the Sheriff's Department and filed a complaint against the deputy. 2812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Black history in San Diego goes back hundreds of years, but a unique aspect specific to the area is a historic building that no longer stands. At the intersection of Market and 2nd in downtown, there is a small plaque on the ground. This marker is all that’s left of the historic Hotel Douglas, a place founded in the Roaring 20s that became an icon for the area.George Ramsey founded Hotel Douglas in 1924 as a place for the black community. During this time, segregation was prevalent, and many hotels were whites-only. Ramsey created the hotel as a way to give a space and economic boost to black people.“He had the idea of creating a black hotel. When I say black hotel I mean a hotel run by black people, owned by black people, employing black people, serving black people,” said David Miller, a history professor who also works with the San Diego History Center.Miller said the hotel became a famous spot because of the nightclub inside that drew in many famous black performers, including Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington, who would stop on their way to shows in neighboring major cities.“San Diego was a stopover point so the club in the hotel became a center for black performers and in fact became dubbed the Harlem of the west,” said Miller. The hotel no longer stands, but the plaque marks the history it represents. Miller said this history, similar to other major black history days like Juneteenth, is important to know and understand to grow as a society.“It’s a chance to truth tell and to learn about not necessarily a moment in history but a moment in history that illustrates the ongoing nature of making freedom and navigating what freedom means now as free people,” he said. The San Diego History Center will reopen to the public July 4, 2020 after closures due to coronavirus. There are also resources available online to learn more about local history. The museum will also have an exhibit on Nathan Harrison, a legendary African American San Diego homesteader, in spring 2021. The display was delayed due to COVID-19. 2067

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Back to school routines aren’t just for kids; parents must also get in the habit of alarms, rides, and packing lunches. While children may be content with processed and sugary snacks, it’s up to moms and dads to keep lunches healthy.Empty calories are a concern, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Added sugars and solid fats contribute to 40 percent of the daily calories for children. About half of the empty calories come from soda, fruit drinks, dairy or grain desserts, pizza, and whole milk.Dr. Nimali Fernando is a Virginia-based pediatrician who founded The Doctor Yum Project and co-wrote the book “Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater: A Parent’s Handbook”.“School lunches may not seem significant in a child’s life, but when you add up that they are eating them five days per week it’s quite a lot of their calorie consumption,” said Dr. Fernando. “Teaching them healthy lunch habits from a young age will give them the tools to build lifelong healthy habits.”Dr. Yum recommends steps for preparing healthy school lunches.Meal planning: Get a head start on the week’s meals by planning during the weekend. You can save time on your shopping list if you’re well prepared.Buy in bulk: Instead of expensive individually-packed snacks, opt for bulk purchases of items like dried fruit and trail mix.Pack leftovers: If you cook extra food at dinner, you can put some aside for your child’s lunch the next day.Cook or bake: Why buy muffins when you can bake a batch and save money? You also have more control over the ingredients. Additional items can be put in the freezer.Skip the sugar: Sweet drinks are expensive and add extra sugar to your child’s meals. The CDC says sugary beverages account for 10 percent of the calories in children’s diets. You can always send them to school with a reusable container for water.Change it up: Break free of the PB&J mold with an addition like bananas or whole wheat tortillas. Send a smoothie: You can get extra nutrition with frozen fruits and vegetables in smoothies. Keep frozen food on hand to blend. The smoothies can go back into the freezer until they’re ready to eat. 2162
