SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. The program is accepting applications ahead of interviews in December, and January starts.  1227

SeaWorld has a similar offer for active-duty service members.“My son is a military veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. It's located about 3340 light-years away in the direction of constellation Cygnus. 1748

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some parents at a San Diego Unified School District campus are asking district officials for help with challenges they say are brought on by new, later start times.This fall, three schools implemented SDUSD's "Healthy Start Times" program, beginning classes at 8:35 a.m. The District has cited multiple studies that show later start times have positive effects on the health and academic performances of students.RELATED: Three San Diego schools to switch to later start times in 2019But some parents say the District isn't doing enough to help families who still have to drop their students off at school before 8 am, so the parents can get to work on time.Angel Caturay is one of those parents. He drops his son, Angel Miles, off at the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Angel Miles then has to wait outside of the school's locked gates until 8 am.10News went by the school at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday morning and found more than two dozen other students also waiting. Some said they had been there since 7 am. Aside from one parking lot attendant, there was no adult supervision.The gates at SCPA don't open until 8 a.m. School begins at 8:35 a.m."Who's responsible?" Caturay asks. "When you drop your kids off, you feel the school should be responsible while they're here at school."In a statement, a district spokesperson told 10News that, "Students left without supervision is a safety risk... the principal has been working with parents to help them identify solutions."Caturay wants to know if the library, cafeteria or classroom could be opened for students to wait in. His son says it's challenging to use that time for homework."There's a lot of groups just sitting down and talking," says Angel Miles. "There are no tables. You're bending your back over, and that can get uncomfortable."The District addressed the issue in a letter to parents last year. Part of it reads, "just because some parents may be unable to provide healthy sleep hours for their teens does not mean that school district policy should prevent all of their teen students from getting the amount of sleep doctors say they need to be healthy and safe."The District plans to have every high school go to the later start times by next fall. Meanwhile, the California Legislature recently passed SB 328. The new law will require all middle and high schools in the state to start later in the day. It specifies start times no earlier than 8 am for middle schools, and 8:30 a.m. for high schools.Governor Newsom has not signed the bill yet, and it wouldn't go into effect until 2022. When he emailed the principal at SCPA, he was told about the District's bus program. District files show that costs 0 per year for the first student, 0 for the second. "It would be nice if they could open up the library," he says. "At least they (the students) could get some work done, study work ahead of time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Smugglers from Mexico have reportedly been able to breach recently constructed sections of the border wall, according to a report from The Washington Post. Smugglers breached the wall's bollard steel and concrete sections using reciprocating saws, allowing drugs and people to pass through from Mexico, the Post reported, citing U.S. agents and officials. The exact locations of the damaged wall were not indicated.10News reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Saturday. While no one was available to speak, the CBP said in an email, "the bollard walls were not designed to be impenetrable or indestructible."RELATED: Border officials say the wall is working, drug smuggling shifting to the seaThis contrasts President Donald Trump's claims during a visit to San Diego in September, in which he claimed the bollard walls were "virtually impenetrable." The President went on to say at the time, "if you think you're going to cut it with a blow torch, that doesn't work because you hit concrete. And then if you think you're going to go through the concrete that doesn't work because we have very powerful rebar inside."The new 14-mile stretch of bollard fencing was completed in August, running from Otay Mountain to San Diego's coastline. CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan also said this week that border apprehensions were up 88% from Oct. 1, 2018, to Sept. 30, 2019.An administration official told the Post that the number of these breaches have totaled "a few instances," and echoed border agents' sentiments that the wall "significantly increased security and deterrence" in the San Diego and El Centro areas.The Washington Post reports that smugglers have cut through areas, then replaced the bollard in its original position or used putty to make it appear fixed in order to continue using the opening.RELATED: US border agents dealing with rise of 'fake families'Though agents can repair the damage by welding the bollard wall, they say smugglers can return to the same spot because the metal and concrete are now weakened, the Post said.The Post says that some of the damage has occurred in areas where electronic sensors to detect sawing vibrations have yet to be installed.Makeshift ladders have also been used to climb the barrier into the San Diego area, using hooks and rope ladders to climb down on the U.S. side of the border, the Post adds. 2675
