UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here with U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday, focusing on bilateral ties and regional and world issues and calling for more cooperation.China and the United States can deepen their cooperation on significant international affairs and major regional issues as well as on efforts to handle global financial woes and climate change, Wen said.He said China and the United States could forge an even closer and wider-ranging trade and financial relationship. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) meets with U.S. President Barack Obama in New York, the United States, Sept. 23, 2010.At the beginning of the meeting, Wen said the China-U.S. relationship has advanced beyond the bilateral scope and has a major impact on the world. The common interests of the two countries far outweigh their differences, Wen said.Although there exist differences between China and the United States, the problems can be well solved through dialogue and cooperation, the premier said.Obama, for his part, noted that since taking office, he has had good cooperation with the Chinese leadership. The United States will continue to enhance its ties with China on the basis of common interests and mutual respect, Obama added. The two sides have already cooperated on a range of important issues, including the global financial crisis, and have also cooperated well under the G-20 framework, the president said.

TIANJIN, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator on Saturday said China is drafting a law to act to combat climate change, a move that signals the country's proactive role in honoring its commitment to curtailing emissions, among other measures, in tackling climate change."The responsibility of lawmakers is to urge the government to take concrete steps to meet its promises," Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told experts attending a two-day forum on climate change legislation being held in Tianjin beginning Saturday.Chen said despite a broad range of government issues, China is taking serious measures in dealing with climate change and has achieved remarkable progress.Chen said lawmakers will particularly base China's climate change legislation on a resolution passed by the NPC last August. The resolution says China will adhere to "the basic framework" set up in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed by more than 150 countries in 1992, and the Kyoto Protocol, agreed to in 1997 by the majority of the international community, to set binding targets for developed countries to reduce CO2 emissions, along with the principles of UNFCCC-endorsed "common but differentiated responsibilities" as well as "sustainable development."Chen said many developing countries are gravely suffering from the damage caused by extreme weathers this year. The international community should provide greater support to these countries in terms of finance, technical support, and capability building to boost their ability to deal with natural disasters.More than 60 lawmakers and law experts from 16 countries and regions are participating in the Tianjin forum on climate change legislation, co-hosted by the NPC and Global Legislators Organization for a Better Environment.

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged accelerating research and development of low-carbon technology and mass participation to fulfill national energy saving and emission reduction targets."The global climate change is deeply affecting human beings' living and development. Our country, now in a stage of fast industrial and urban development, is facing obvious environmental pressure," Xi said here Saturday while attending activities to mark this year's National Science Popularization Day.The theme of Saturday's activities is "saving energy and resources, protecting ecological environment and ensuring safety and health."Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (C) visits solar energy utilization technology while attending activities to mark the National Science Popularization Day in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 18, 2010.Xi urged the whole society to continue energy-saving and emission-reducing campaigns and support the country's policies on climate change. In addition, Xi urged the country's youth to put forward more ideas for low-carbon life style and contribute their own green inventions.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and Turkey voiced commitment here on Monday to make joint efforts to crack down on terrorism and separatism."China would stay firm on safeguarding its national interests relating to the national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.Xi made the remarks in his meeting with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, according to a press release from Chinese Foreign Ministry.Xi also expressed his appreciation during the meeting for Turkey's support of China's efforts to combat the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces that threaten to sabotage China's unity. The "East Turkistan" terrorist forces pose threats to the development and stability of northwest China, Xi told Davutoglu, noting that China wants to step up cooperation with Turkey in this regard.A bomb attack on Aug. 19 in Aksu City in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region left eight people dead, including the two attackers, and 15 others injured.Chinese authorities believe the "three forces," an umbrella category for separatists, extremists and terrorists, are responsible for the attacks.Xinjiang -- with 41.5 percent of its population Uygurs, a large Muslim Chinese ethnic group -- is China's frontline against terrorism. The region borders eight central and west Asian countries, many of which have been attacked by terrorist and extremist militant groups.Echoing Xi's views, Davutoglu said Turkey values its ties with China and would unswervingly uphold the one-China policy and crack down on any activities in Turkey that aim to sabotage China's sovereignty and threaten its territorial integrity. The two sides also hailed progress made on bilateral relations, according to the press release, pledging to intensify high level political exchange, expand economic and trade cooperation and strengthen coordination on regional and international issues in an effort to safeguard the interests of the developing countries.Davutoglu's China visit was at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.
