SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 14-year-old girl is the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego.The girl, who died on Feb. 12, had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.“Pediatric influenza deaths are very unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the family,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “It is extremely important that people get vaccinated because influenza can be deadly.”The teen is one of five flu deaths reported last week, bringing the county's death toll this season to 35 people. The other deaths last week were four men —ages 82, 73, 62 and 56 — and all had underlying medical conditions. Only the 82-year-old and the 56-year-old had been vaccinated, the county says.At this time last season, there had been 268 deaths.“Influenza continues to be widespread. If you have not gotten a flu shot, do it now,” Wooten added.Last week, 539 lab-confirmed cases of influenza were reported, compares to 476 at the same time last season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  It was a normal Thursday night for Rob Perelman. His Uber app was on and he was picking up passengers in San Diego. Then suddenly, things changed and his passengers got violent. You may have seen the video by now - a car crashing in Banker's Hill after the passengers began violently beating the driver.RELATED: Uber driver attacked by drunk passengersFriday, Perelman spoke for the first time about his early-morning attack. He told 10News what happened Friday morning isn't an Uber problem - they were just bad apples. "I've done 4,999 rides with good people," Perelman said. "And one with a bad person."Perelman gave that bad ride sometime after 1:00 a.m. Friday. He picked up the passengers in Banker's Hill and almost immediately realized they were drunk. "My gut feeling said to drive away," he said. "But I'm here to give people rides home, and I said you know what, 'we've all been the drunk guy just trying to get home from the bar, let me give these guys a ride home.'"MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHe only made it two blocks. "The guy in the back seat starts puking out the window...and if he can't make it two blocks, he's definitely not going to make it 10 minutes," Perelman said. So he pulled over and asked the two to get out of his car. He told 10News that he even tried opening the door for one of them."Still nothing happening, so I say a third time, 'get out of the vehicle or I'm calling 911,'" Perelman said. That's when things got dangerous, and the passenger next to him attacked with a fury of punches."And he's not stopping, he's just beyond the point now," Perelman said. "Probably doesn't know what he's doing, just starts throwing punches at my head, I can't get him to stop. I've got my glasses on, he knocks my glasses off."Perelman says he was left with two options. Take the beating or jump out of the car. He took option two, jumping out of the car while it was still in drive and running to a nearby house to call the police.After the car crashed, the passengers seemed to have a moment of clarity and took off. Perelman says he left behind a shoe, a cell phone and ,000 dollars in damages to his car.Even though he had a bad experience, Perelman says he just wants to get back on the road. "I'm just happy that I was able to get out safely and I've got a few bruises on my head, but I was able to walk away, so I'm lucky that it didn't escalate," Perelman said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old has been arrested after being shot by a store clerk he was trying to rob, San Diego Police say.According to police, Hector Lopez-Gastelum entered the La Michoacana store on the 700 block of Vesta Street around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 demanding cash. Police say Lopez-Gastelum was armed with a handgun.After the clerk handed over the cash, the suspect reportedly demanded that a second register be opened.“While Lopez-Gastelum was still in the store, the clerk shot him twice in the torso with his own handgun, which is legally owned,” police said.The clerk then retrieved Lopez-Gastelum’s handgun and called 911. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A brush fire in the Japatul Valley area exploded in size in about an hour on Saturday, forcing nearby residents to evacuate.The Valley Fire ignited off Spirit Trail and Japatul Road, just southeast of Alpine, just before 2:50 p.m., according to Cleveland National Forest. The fire had scorched about 1,500 acres and was 0% contained as of 5:50 p.m.Fire officials said the dangerous rate of spread was pushing the fire southwest toward Lawson Valley. According to Cal Fire Cpt. Kendal Bortisser says the intense heat and rugged topography of the area are also posing a challenge for crews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver struck a fire hydrant outside San Diego International Airport Saturday, causing water to rocket into the sky outside Terminal 2 and headaches inside the airport.Terminal 2's East entrance on West Harbor Drive was temporarily closed after the driver struck the hydrant along the terminal's departure lanes around 10:40 a.m. Airport officials also closed Terminal 2 East's concessions and directed all traffic through Terminal 1.At one point, vehicles backed up onto Harbor Dr. as drivers encountered the closure caused by the geyser, according to a witness. Fire crews worked feverishly for about two hours, as gallons of water and kicked up rocks showered them below, before the water was turned off around 12:35 p.m. 753
