Uber is blowing through billions of dollars, but CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is undeterred. In an interview with CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour that will air Wednesday, Khosrowshahi defended Uber's business model, which involves the company investing heavily in promotions to entice customers to its on-demand ride and meal-delivery offerings."The model is absolutely sustainable," Khosrowshahi said. "The business, for example, is still growing 30-plus percent on a global basis. And anytime you have a business that has the kind of market size of trillions of dollars in terms of transportation and food and global commerce, it makes sense for a company to invest."Uber lost .2 billion in the three months ending in June, its 742

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has announced that Vice President Mike Pence will be “in charge” of the administration’s response to the coronavirus outbreak. Trump made the announcement Wednesday during a press conference with officials from the Centers Disease Control and Prevention. During the presser, the president said the United States is “very, very ready” for whatever the new coronavirus threat brings. Trump assured the public that the risk to Americans is “very low” and that his task force is effectively handling the outbreak. That’s despite the CDC saying the day before that it seems inevitable that the virus will begin to spread in U.S. communities.Trump also addressed the negotiations over the funding that will be allocated to combat the virus. Originally, the White House requested .5 billion, but lawmakers are calling for much more. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has asked for .5 billion. Wednesday, Trump indicated that he’d be open to more spending.“We’re going to spend whatever’s appropriate,” Trump told reporters. Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, also spoke during the presser. She said the government’s aggressive containment strategy has been working and it’s responsible for the low levels of cases in U.S. so far. However, she said officials do expect more cases and it’s a good time to prepare. “As you heard, it’s the perfect time for businesses, health care systems, universities and schools to look at their pandemic preparedness plans,” said Schuchat. “Dust them off and make sure they’re ready.” 1594

When former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was arrested on Friday on third-degree murder charges, more details emerged on how George Floyd died while in police custody on Monday. According to a report prepared by prosecutors in Hennepin County, Minnesota, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes, 46 seconds. For the final two minutes and 53 seconds, prosecutors said, Floyd was unresponsive. Police body cams showed that at 8:24:24, Floyd stopped moving. At 8:25:31, video showed that Floyd stopped talking and breathing. It was not until 8:27:24 when video showed that Chauvin removed his knee from Floyd’s neck, prosecutors said. The prosecution’s report said that “police are trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous.”After Chauvin lifted his knee, Floyd was placed on a gurney and taken to the hospital, where he pronounced dead. The county medical examiner reported to prosecutors that several factors likely contributed to Floyd’s death. “The autopsy revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation,” the report read. "Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease. The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”To read the full arrest report, click 1479

While Florida might be spared from a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian, the same might not be true for the Carolinas. The National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane warnings, which as of Tuesday evening, now extend to Surf City, N.C. A hurricane watch has been issued for the North Carolina coast north of Surf City. Meanwhile, the entire South Carolina coast is under a hurricane warning. Why?The forecast for Dorian calls for the eye to brush the Carolina coast. The official forecast has the center of Dorian near Charleston, S.C. by Thursday afternoon. The track could take Dorian inland, or out to sea. Regardless, the National Hurricane Center said that Dorian's expanse of damaging winds is growing in size, even as Dorian's top wind speeds have decreased. Hurricane-force winds now extend 60 miles from Dorian's center, and tropical storm-force winds extend 175 miles. Even if Dorian's center narrowly misses the coast, residents near the South and North Carolina coastlines could see hurricane-force winds on Thursday and Friday. As of 6 p.m. Thursday, Dorian's had top winds of 110 MPH - 1 MPH shy of major hurricane status. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Dorian will maintain category 2 status while increasing the size of its wind field. Although a direct hit us unlikely, much of the Virginia coast is under a tropical storm watch as Dorian's large expanse of winds could make for tropical storm conditions for Virginia Beach. 1472
