UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China supports for UN General Assembly to play an even greater role in handling international affairs, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday.Yang made the remarks in a meeting with UN General Assembly President Joseph Deiss at UN Headquarters on the sidelines of a high-level meeting on anti-poverty goals.The foreign minister voiced hope for the General Assembly to attach greater importance to development issues, proactively implement the outcomes of the UN high-level meeting, pay attention to the concerns of developing countries and further promote international development cooperation.On Monday morning, Yang also held separate meetings with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and the foreign ministers of Khazakstan, Indonesia and Switzerland.He told Mousa that China hopes for a stronger Sina-Arab strategic relationship of cooperation, and that China remains committed to supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people in seeking legitimate national interests.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wang Lihua sent her son to a Shanghai rehabilitation center for the disabled when he was three years old. Now about to turn six, her son, who has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination, has regained use of some parts of his body."When he first came to the center, he was not able to crawl, kneel, or stand. Now he has not only learned these abilities, but also learned to walk, even just for a short distance," Wang said.Opened in 1999, the Shanghai Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Center for the Disabled specializes in medical, educational, engineering, and vocational rehabilitation for the disabled.Feeling timid and afraid of the strange new environment at first, Wang's son now very much likes the therapists at the center."The therapists here work very hard, since they provide training to children with cerebral palsy one at a time from dawn to dusk. The children have a busy day as well. My son spends his day either having meals or training," Wang said.The hard work has paid off. Her son has learned by heart many lines of a nursery rhyme and Chinese poem, as well as addition and subtraction.Largely satisfied with the results of the rehabilitation, Wang said she was thinking about sending her son to a regular primary school next year.According to Xu Shenglin, the center's vice director, the center treats children suffering from cerebral palsy or autism with a combination of therapies such as acupuncture, massage and sports, and every child with cerebral palsy is treated in a one-on-one rehabilitation program which has an effective rate of 95 percent.The center also runs a course for parents of children with cerebral palsy to teach them about home rehabilitation.Monthly fees for each child with cerebral palsy at the center is 3,000 yuan (495 U.S. Dollars), with 60 percent covered by health insurance. Families with children with cerebral palsy receive an annual subsidy of 10,000 yuan from the Shanghai municipal government.In Shanghai, the economic center of China, there are 942,000 disabled people, accounting for 5.29 of the city's population. The city's government has spent about 4.4 billion yuan in aid programs for the disabled since 2007, which has helped set up over 2,000 aid institutions and allows 100,000 disabled people to receive subsistence and other kinds of government subsidies.Under a program that offers health and medical services at home, some 130,000 disabled people have received basic rehabilitation services and 160,000 have received health check-up service.The government in Shanghai has also financed at-home care for 15,000 unemployed and severely disabled people who are not committed to any institutions or do not receive any subsidy for day care.In China, the rights of the disabled have always been a priority of the government. A national human rights action plan for 2009 and 2010 specifies targets about guaranteeing the rights of the disabled.The Chinese government's efforts to guarantee these rights are evident at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo. Some 1.86 million people have visited the first-ever pavilion dedicated to the disabled in the history of the World Expo, as of the middle of October."The number of visitors far surpassed our expectations. I think this shows more and more people have concern for the disabled," said Cao Ziping, the director of the pavilion.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday called for accelerated public hospital reforms and the establishment of an essential medicine system to provide better health care.Li, who heads the State Council's leading group on health care reforms, made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing.The essential medicine system planned by the reforms will allow citizens to buy affordable, effective and safe medicines, Li said. BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday vowed to enhance coordination with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to continuously push forward the reform of the global economic and financial systems. "Currently the world economy is recovering slowly, but the outlook still remains uncertain," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said while meeting with visiting IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn in Beijing.To completely get over the global financial crisis and realize sustainable development requires the international community to follow a path for mutual benefits and common development, face up to what caused the financial crisis and step up reform of the global economic and financial systems, he added.Praising China's counter measures against the crisis as "correct", Strauss-Kahn said the IMF values China's position and role and would like to build closer ties with the country.He called on countries to help one another to consolidate the growth momentum of the world economy.In an earlier meeting with Strauss-Kahn, Vice Premier Wang Qishan urged timely adjustments to global economic rules and standards to keep pace with the development of the global economy."The developing countries and emerging economies should have more say in the process," he added.He said the international community should work closely to ensure a success of the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit.In response, Strauss-Kahn said the IMF would continue to strengthen cooperation with China and increase the country's representation and voice in the organization.

XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to attract large influxes of foreign investment in the next few years despite uncertainties in the global economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Tuesday.Although uncertainties lie in the process of the global economic recovery and the development trend of the world economy would, to some extent, affect foreign investment in China, the next few years will still be a high-tide period for foreign investment inflow into the country, Chen said Tuesday at a ministerial conference at the 2nd World Investment Forum (WIF) in Xiamen City in southeast China's Fujian Province."Currently, many countries and organizations have rated China as the most appealing destination for investment, which probably would not be changed for a few years," said the minister.Foreign direct investment (FDI) this year is set to "surpass 100 billion U.S. dollars," compared to 90 billion dollars last year, an official with the ministry predicted on Sunday.During the first seven months of this year, China's FDI increased 20.65 percent year on year to 58.35 billion dollars, according to the ministry' s latest statistics.Meanwhile, some 14,459 foreign-invested companies were established in China in the first seven months, up 17.9 percent year on year.
