Moving is a part of growing up: from home to dorm or apartment, from apartment into a condo or home, from one part of the country to another. While the reasons can vary, this year the coronavirus pandemic is motivating a lot of moves.Realtor groups around the country have reported that home sales continue to be strong in many areas around the country, as buyers look for a new place to call their work-from-home office. The National Association of Realtors says August is poised to have a home buying peak, with year-over-year growth in home sales, buyer demand and housing prices.Since many are discovering work can be done from a home located almost anywhere during the pandemic, moving trends are favoring smaller cities and reportedly lower rents and home prices.Moving help website HireaHelper.com released results of a recent study on 2020 moving trends. They looked at more than 25,000 moves booked since March 11, 2020 to see where people were headed as the country manages the coronavirus pandemic.According to HireaHelper, 15 percent of all moves they tracked were motivated by the pandemic. Of those moves, 37 percent were moving because they could no longer afford to live where they were living.Their study also found high-rent cities like San Francisco and New York saw more people leaving than moving in; both cities had 80 percent more people moving out of the area than moving in. New York as a state had 64 percent more people leaving than moving in.Meanwhile, the state of Idaho saw an increase of 194 percent more people moving in compared to leaving. The next closest state with high move-in compared to move-out numbers was New Mexico with a 44 percent increase.According to a survey conducted in July by the Pew Research Center, one-in-five Americans (roughly 22 percent) have relocated because of the Covid-19 pandemic or know someone who has. Roughly 6 percent of those surveyed say someone has moved into their household because of the pandemic.Overall those most likely being motivated to move or to have more people move into their home because of the pandemic are young adults, 37 percent of 18 to 29 year olds surveyed.In that age group, roughly one-in-ten of them said they have moved because of the coronavirus outbreak. The reasons varied from colleges closing campus, work hours cutting back or being laid off.Typically, there is a slow down in home sales and moving in the fall and winter. The National Association of Realtors says the pandemic has pushed the normal summer peak by a few months into August. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865

MOUNDS, Okla. — Logan Phillips said he was inspired during the teacher walkout and signed up to run for Oklahoma's House District 24 seat on a whim.Phillips figured he would lose, but began legwork for a campaign in 2020. His opponent was 10-year incumbent Steve Kouplan, the Democratic minority leader."I didn't think I had a chance going against Goliath. He could outspend me, out-market me and do pretty much anything when it came to money. So it was just me talking to people," Phillips said.Phillips sat at Mamadou's Restaurant in Glenpool, Oklahoma by himself to watch the results come in on election night. He said even his wife went home early. But the Republican stayed neck in neck with the incumbent all evening."Then the polls and stuff actually went down. So they stopped reporting for about 10 minutes and we were stuck on the last four counties. I was losing within half a point. Then they all came in at the same time and I went up and won by 350 votes," Phillips said.Phillips said he spoke with a couple other lawmakers and put a few posts on social media. That was the extent of his campaign."Straight party voting was huge for the Republican party. They came out and they wanted the Republicans in and I was the Republican. That accounted for 50-something percent of my votes," Phillips said.The representative-elect is a teacher at Tulsa Community College. His father, sister and stepmother are also educators. The family tells KJRH they're excited for new faces at the state capitol."I'm certainly anticipating some great changes. That we could go from being the last in something to being the first in something. More than 600,000 people signed up for Obamacare in the first four days of open enrollment, far outpacing last year's rate.Nearly a quarter were enrolling for the first time, while the rest renewed coverage, according to statistics released Thursday by the Trump administration. The period covers Nov. 1 through Nov. 4.The data provides the first look at how Obamacare will fare under an administration determined to dismantle the health reform law. While Trump officials are maintaining the federal exchange, healthcare.gov, they have slashed open enrollment advertising and support. Also, consumers will have only six weeks to sign up for coverage on the federal exchange, rather than the three months or more they had in previous years. MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say two murder suspects have escaped from central California's Monterey County Jail.The county sheriff's office says in a tweet that the inmates escaped Sunday morning.The tweet says Santos Fonseca and Jonathan Salazar were in custody on suspicion of murder and other violent charges.A call seeking additional details from sheriff's officials wasn't immediately returned.Monterey is a city of about 28,000 people on California's central coast, 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of San Francisco. 538
