U.S. government officials are putting an early end to a study testing an Eli Lilly antibody drug for people hospitalized with COVID-19 because it doesn’t seem to be helping them.Independent monitors had paused enrollment in the study two weeks ago because of a possible safety issue. But on Monday, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which sponsors the study, said a closer look did not verify a safety problem but found a low chance that the drug would prove helpful for hospitalized patients. It is a setback for one of the most promising treatment approaches for COVID-19. President Donald Trump received a similar experimental, two-antibody drug from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. on an emergency basis when he was sickened with the coronavirus earlier this month. In a statement Lilly notes that the government is continuing a separate study testing the antibody drug in mild to moderately ill patients, to try to prevent hospitalization and severe illness. The company also is continuing its own studies testing the drug, which is being developed with the Canadian company AbCellera.Antibodies are proteins the body makes when an infection occurs; they attach to a virus and help it be eliminated. The experimental drugs are concentrated versions of one or two specific antibodies that worked best against the coronavirus in lab and animal tests.Lilly and Regeneron have asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to grant emergency use authorization for their drugs for COVID-19 while late-stage studies continue. Lilly says its request is based on other results suggesting the drug helps patients who are not hospitalized, and that it will continue to seek the FDA’s permission for emergency use.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' son is running for Congress in New Hampshire.Levi Sanders, 48, said in a statement first reported by WMUR and since posted on his campaign website that he is entering the open-seat race to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter."This is a unique opportunity to listen to the hard working men and women of New Hampshire about the issues that matter to them," he said. The New Hampshire 1st District is one of the nation's most competitive open-seat races in 2018's midterms.Unlike his father, who ran as an independent in Vermont, Sanders is running as a Democrat. He'll be the eighth Democratic candidate to enter the race.Sanders lives in Claremont, New Hampshire, which is outside the 1st District. Members of the US House must live in the state they are running in, but are not required to live in the district.Sanders said in the statement he's worked in Massachusetts as a legal services analyst for 17 years."For 15 years, New Hampshire has been my family's home," he said.Sanders' platform largely mirrors his father's. He's campaigning for a "Medicare for all" single-payer health care system, free college tuition, an increased minimum wage, as well as "sensible gun legislation" and solutions to the "crisis level" opioid epidemic.Sanders' advisers had previously lined up behind state Rep. Mark MacKenzie.Maura Sullivan, a former Marine and Veterans Administration official, and Chris Pappas, a New Hampshire Executive Council member whose family co-owns the Puritan Backroom restaurant in Manchester, a well-known stop on the presidential campaign trail, are also running for the Democratic nomination.  1668

Vice President Mike Pence is heading to Louisiana just as the state is re-emerging as a national hot spots for the coronavirus. He's scheduled to meet Tuesday with Gov. John Bel Edwards, members of the congressional delegation and state health officials to talk about Louisiana’s response to the pandemic. One person he won't see is Attorney General Jeff Landry, who tested positive ahead of the Pence visit and is in quarantine. Louisiana's confirmed caseload is growing fast, and its infection and hospitalization rates are surging. Edwards enacted a statewide mask mandate for people 8 and older that took effect Monday and bars are back to take-out and delivery only. 679

Veterinarians are seeing an alarming increase in the number of cases of the canine parvovirus.Nationally, Blue Pearl pet hospitals report a 70 percent increase of the virus compared to statistics collected the previous five years. While an exact reason for the spike has yet to be determined, veterinarians suspect the coronavirus pandemic can shoulder some of the blame.“If people are staying home and have strict stay at home orders, probably vet visits aren’t the first thing on their minds,” said Dr. Lenore Bacek with Blue Pearl. “Financially, some people took a large hit to their normal finances during this time and routine vaccines weren’t a priority.”She added that people may be taking their newly adopted puppies to dog parks before they are fully vaccinated.Parvovirus is highly contagious because it can live on surfaces like grass or blankets for months and years.“Just assume it’s in the environment and don’t take your puppy somewhere other dogs have been,” Dr. Bacek said.Symptoms of the virus include vomiting and diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weakness and weight loss.Dogs can’t pass the virus to humans. However, the increase of parvovirus cases could mean other important vaccines are being neglected.“We worry if they are not getting parvo vaccines, are we missing things like rabies vaccines, which could have a public health implication?” Dr. Bacek said.Puppies are most at risk, but the virus can also impact adult dogs. Veterinarians recommend adults receive a booster vaccine every three years. If a dog falls ill, they can face expensive treatment.“With aggressive treatment, hospitalization, IV fluid therapy, supportive care, the survival rate is high, close to 90 percent,” Dr. Bacek said. However, the financial and emotional toll of a dog getting sick can be avoided with proper vaccines.“We want to make sure as the first wave continues and second waves comes, that vets are seen as an important factor in public health,” Dr. Bacek said.KSTU's John Franchi was first to report this story. 2051
