Gavin Newsom ordered that flags at the state Capitol be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of the eight Marines and one Navy sailor who died when an amphibious assault vehicle sank during a training mission last week near San Clemente Island."Jennifer and I were heartbroken to learn of the loss of nine service members in an accident off San Clemente Island," Newsom said in a statement. "It is a painful reminder of the sacrifice of members of our armed forces, who put their lives on the line for us. We stand united in mourning with their families and fellow Marines and sailors."The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship about 80 miles off the coast of Encinitas about 5:45 p.m. last Thursday when it started taking on water for unknown reasons, according to Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of 1st MEF.Seven members of the Camp Pendleton-based crew survived the accident. Medics took two of them to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where both were admitted in critical status. One was upgraded to stable condition as of Sunday night, Marine officials said.The other five rescued Marines received clean bills of health and returned to their units.Lance Cpl. Guillermo S. Perez of New Braunfels, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. They are pushing for H.R. 1 - a bill that would reform campaign finance laws, ethics, and voting rights."We want to get the money and the gerrymandering out of politics and the ethics back into government," Kirk said. Davis says the bill is still being drafted and hopes to have it passed by Jan. 21. That's the eighth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which freed corporations and unions to spend all they want on political ads. It appears, however, to have a minuscule chance in the Republican-controlled senate. SAN CARLOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A grandmother and several children were forced to run out of a San Carlos home that burst into flames Saturday night. The fire broke out on Park Ridge Boulevard in San Carlos around 10 p.m. Saturday. Fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading to a nearby canyon. Neighbors say they heard what sounded like explosions before they ran out and saw the home on fire. A woman was home watching her grandchildren when the house caught fire. All those inside were able to make it out safely. San Diego Fire-Rescue says it was initially challenging to battle the flames because the closest hydrants are located hundreds of feet away. “I went across the street and pounded on the door and the window to make sure that nobody was in there. Don’t think they were. There was just a lot of explosions and tires I guess blowing up. It was just In full flames when it happened,” one neighbor said. At this time, it’s unclear what caused the fire. 981
