SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A life-changing medical diagnosis forced a San Diego sailor to leave the military and start over. While devastating, he's now pursuing another career with help from his new best friend. "When I left the ship and went to MCRD I started getting really sick and thought it was the flu," said Hugo Reynoso.Instead, Reynoso was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was medically retired from the Navy. "It's kind of scary having a steady paycheck and then going to have to look for something else," said Reynoso.On several occasions, dangerously high blood sugar levels sent Reynoso to the hospital. A friend suggested he get a diabetic alert dog. "He has enough personality for the both of us! He's a special character," said Reynoso, referring to his service dog Sky.Sky can detect when Reynoso's blood sugar levels are too high or low, alerting him by tugging his shirt or howling. In one instance, Sky detected extremely low levels when Reynoso was sleeping, alerting him to get up. Sky was by Reynoso's side as he pursued a new career in the automotive field. Reynoso was commuting two hours to Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Rancho Cucamonga for a fast-track program. "I was commuting 167 miles, one way, I would have to wake up around 2:30 a.m., start my drive at 3," said Reynoso.Reynoso did this five times a week, running on just a few hours of sleep. Sky was there to ensure his blood sugar levels were steady. "Everyone told me when we were getting ready to graduate that they were going to miss me, but mostly they were going to miss him because he was their support too."While Reynoso's diagnosis took away his old dreams, he now has a partner to help achieve new ones. 1711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A photographer who recorded a security guard's exchange in Lemon Grove with a woman about immigration is explaining the situation.Sonia Sorrano says she is still shaken by the heated confrontation she stopped to record while shopping with her 9-year-old daughter."How am I supposed to tell my daughter she can trust a person in a uniform and badge?" Sorrano said.RELATED: Video shows security guard questioning woman's immigration statusSorrano started recording the argument when she says she heard the guard using inappropriate language.  "I understand he was frustrated with her but he got very unprofessional about it and I told him not to talk to her that way.  I did call him a fat ass, then he turned on me and called me an ugly b****  in front of my daughter."Sorrano said she has attempted to report the guard's actions to his employer, Allied Universal."I get no answers I just get put on hold.  I think he should be fired.  If I employed someone like that I would want him gone.  He was just unprofessional."  1087

San Diego (KGTV) -- A local enterprise center for at-risk teens in City Heights is doing what they can to help those struggling during the pandemic. Their weekly food distribution is serving hundreds of people.The Union of Pan Asian Communities, also known as UPAC, works with at-risk teens in the City Heights community. The organization strives to lead the teens on a successful path.“We provide all the mentorship and guidance that we can for these kids to follow the right tracks but employment is such a critical feature,” says Director Dante Dauz.In 2018, the Enterprise Center was created to help the teens gain employment and entrepreneurial skills. The center consists of the “Neighborhood Cafe,” a commercial kitchen, print shop and technology center.“They are prepared to open up their own business,” says Dauz. “They’ve been instructed from top to bottom about what licenses they need, business formation, marketing plan.”When the pandemic hit, Dauz says many people in the City Heights area were in need of food.“This community was already experiencing challenges and barriers before COVID-19 hit.”UPAC distributes 6,000 pounds of food through care boxes every Friday.“In addition to the distribution boxes our cafe also pumps out roughly 1,000 hot meals for the families.”Dauz says the teens serving the families not only get a chance to better their professional skills but also give back to the City Heights community they love.“Food for the next few days isn’t going to solve all their problems but, its definitely going to help,” says Dauz. “We take a lot of pride in being able to do that.”The organization says to ensure there is enough for everyone, they encourage people to call and reserve a donation box ahead of time. 1750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego County public defender has pleaded guilty to giving a firearm to a felon.Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A runaway boat became lodged on rocks after taking off while the owner was trying to dock the vessel Monday afternoon.Captain Tony Olson with TowBoatUS San Diego said a man sailing from Harbor Island was trying to dock at Shelter Island when the boat took off.According to Olson, the man was trying to tie the boat off with the sail partially up and the motor running, causing it to take off without him.The 35-foot vessel became lodged on rocks at the Naval Base.It took a while for the boat to become dislodged. Olson says there doesn’t appear to be any major damage to the vessel.Olson noted that this is one of several boats that ran aground Monday.A 19-foot vessel, pictured below, also smashed into rocks at the foot of Point Loma. The Coast Guard warned people traveling through marine channel 16 of the boat that ran aground.  872
