Students around the United States are walking out of class to demand tougher gun laws in response to last week's deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, but some schools are threatening them with harsh punishments.The Needville Independent School District in Texas issued a warning Tuesday that anyone who participated in a walkout or other political protest would be suspended for three days."Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved. All will be suspended for 3 days and parent notes will not alleviate the discipline," Superintendent Curtis Rhodes said in a statement posted on the Needville High School Facebook page.Rhodes said the Houston-area district would not tolerate any protests or demonstrations during school hours."A school is a place to learn and grow educationally, emotionally and morally. A disruption of the school will not be tolerated," he said.The letter was posted on the same day that a 14-year-old was arrested at Needville Junior High School and charged with making a terroristic threat.Survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland have been active in the week since the shooting -- holding rallies, being interviewed by national media and organizing a bus trip to the Florida State Capitol to meet with lawmakers.Students at other schools in Florida and across the United States have held rallies to show support.A school district in Waukesha, Wisconsin, sent a letter to parents telling them that the school district is not involved in a walkout that is scheduled for March 14 and that teachers and students would not be excused if they participate."Participation in a walkout is disruptive and against school regulations, and will subject students to disciplinary measures," Superintendent Todd Gray said in the letter.In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, Gray said the the original letter was designed to let parents know that the walkout next month was planned by an outside group with no connection to the school."At no time have we said students cannot make a statement peacefully while staying in school," Gray said, adding that he had not gotten requests to participate from any students or student groups."We acknowledge that individuals have a right to demonstrate to support a cause. The Barron County Sheriff is asking the public for help in the search for 13-year-old Jayme Closs, who went missing after her parents were shot to death in their Barron, Wisconsin home. The sheriff said they need 100 people to help search the intersection of State Highway 8 and 16th Street at 2 p.m. in Barron. Barron County officials will be there to greet volunteers. Closs has been ruled out as a suspect in the double homicide and the sheriff says they believe she is in danger. Volunteers need photo identification and need to be able to walk over uneven terrain. Please wear proper footwear and bring your own water. Once 100 people are available, the sheriff said they will turn everyone else away.  745

The average Thanksgiving feast for a family of 10 is expected to cost less in 2020 despite a surge in meat prices. The America Farm Bureau Foundation says that the average feast for 10 will cost .90, which is .01 less than in 2019.While other types of meat are more expensive this year, according to USDA data, turkey prices have dropped. A 16-pound turkey is expected to cost .39, which is down 7% from a year ago. Conversely, meat prices in general have jumped more than 6% from October 2019 through October 2020.“The average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner is the lowest since 2010,” said AFBF Chief Economist Dr. John Newton. “Pricing whole turkeys as ‘loss leaders’ to entice shoppers and move product is a strategy we’re seeing retailers use that’s increasingly common the closer we get to the holiday.”Whipped cream and sweet potatoes have also seen a modest decrease in cost over the last year.The data was compiled from 230 pricing surveys spread across all 50 states. 1001

TAMPA, Fla. — Police say that street racing led to the death of a mother struck by a vehicle while pushing her child in a stroller in Tampa, Florida. Three people have been arrested.According to Tampa Police, two cars were street racing down Bayshore Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon when one of the vehicles struck the mother and child near W. Knights Avenue in Tampa.Tampa police say the mother, 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger, and the 2-year-old child were sent to the hospital with serious injuries. Reisinger died at the hospital and the 2-year-old is currently in serious condition.  616
