SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District's Board of Education approved million in safety upgrades this week.The upgrades will be expedited for installation as well, and include things like security cameras, fencing, locks and gates, and notification systems."We proposed several significant changes that were adopted by the Board of Education at its meeting this week. These changes include fast-tracking several security upgrades at school sites. They also include a move to an 'options-based' model of handling actual threats," a letter to parents from Superintendent Cindy Marten said.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schools"We were impressed this week with the determination our students showed in refusing to allow mass school violence to become accepted as the 'new normal.' We share their determination and we are inspired by their example," Marten added.A date was not given as to when the improvements would be issued.Since the Parkland, Fla., school shooting in February, there have been at least 19 cases of school threats in San Diego County. So far, nine juveniles have been criminally charged in the cases.Marten said in the letter that parents have been reaching out since the Florida tragedy to offer suggestions to safety procedures at the district's schools.The district also focuses on improving school climates for students venerable from becoming disconnected from their peers, according to Marten. These improvements include working with staff to identify at-risk students and making it easier to report and confront bullying. 1630

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Seven people were displaced following a house fire in Mountain View early Saturday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m. on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. Crews quickly responded and were able to get the blaze under control. The home that burned sits on a lot with a second home in front, and the front house was not damaged.Family and residents of the front house said they believe the fire started from a washer/dryer unit. They also said that they had to pull bars off of a window to help people escape, with those outside pulling and those inside kicking on the bars. Four people were were hurt after climbing through the broken window.Crews say a total of seven people were displaced and the American Red Cross was called in to help, but family on scene said everyone is okay. They said the hardest part is realizing they lost everything, including Christmas presents that the two little girls who lived in the burned home had just unwrapped the day before.The family started a GoFundMe to raise money following the fire. 1112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Squatters turned a remodeled home in the College Area into a drug den, days after it was listed on as a vacation rental.Two weeks ago, John, who asked us not to use his full name, listed his four-bedroom home on the site VRBO, complete with new mattresses, comforters, and sheets. This past Sunday, a television installer entered the home to put up three TVs."He heard two people run out of the hallway out the back of the house," said John.RELATED: Residents concerned over rash of vandalism in Chula VistaPhotos taken by the installer show part of the scene they left behind: trashed bedrooms and beds littered with electric scooter parts. Also on the beds were crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia. Burn marks adorned three of the beds. John and his girlfriend had spent more than a week making the place perfect. "Just sad. She was crying out the break-in. Upsetting considering how hard we worked and how much money we spent," said John.John isn't sure how the intruders got past the locked doors. But once inside, it's clear they made themselves comfortable, using John's tools and toiletries, and eating food meant for future guests. When police showed up, the burglar had disappeared. John is now planning major upgrades in security.John still plans to list his home on vacation rental sites, but it will cost him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University says 400 students have confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus.The university said Tuesday that, since August 24, 396 students have tested positive for COVID-19. Four other students have probable cases of the virus.The update comes one day after the school extended its stay-at-home order for on-campus residents through September 14.
