SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is recovering from stab wounds after getting attacked by an intruder in his home. The man's 20-year-old son shot and killed that intruder according to San Diego Police. It happened just before 6:30 Tuesday morning at a home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive in San Carlos. Neighbors heard the violence. "I heard the gunshots, it was like three or four gunshots, then screams for help immediately after," said Denise Rolla. When police got to the home, they found the suspect dead in the pool and the 54-year-old homeowner with stab wounds to the upper body. Police say the homeowner's son shot and killed the intruder, who stumbled out the back and landed in the pool. "I heard what turned out to be the suspect fall into the pool and then a couple minutes later, you could see the blood start to spread out through the pool," said Andrew Grogg, who lives right next door. There are walking paths and Mission Trails Golf Course is located behind the homes which are just southwest of Jackson Drive. Neighbors say they don't have a problem with transients in the area, but police say so far, it appears the 38-year-old suspect is homeless. His name hasn't been released. The family owns a tire shop in La Mesa. They are well known and liked in the community. "They're local business owners in the community. They're great neighbors. They're kind, they're nice," said Grogg. Police say so far, the attack appears to be random. 1472

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. "This was a random amateur who thought he was getting free bees and my hope would be someone sees the report and knows who this guy is."Anyone who may have information on the unknown beekeeper is asked to call Encinitas Bee Company at 858-750-5438. 1897

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients. If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. Then the next good thing is maybe instead of having an infusion we'll have a pill or we'll have an inhaler."He said they need 2,000 participants to test each drug and will use a placebo to measure it's effectiveness.A national study, led by San Diego."Hopefully we can do our home city proud," Dr. Smith said. 1442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Republican candidate is finally in the race to become San Diego's next mayor. Thus far, the campaign to be the city's next leader has been dominated by Democrats, with no household Republicans stepping in.But earlier this month, Bay Park resident Richard Hansen re-registered from a decline-to-state to Republican in his own quest to succeed Republican Kevin Faulconer, who is termed out in 2020."I saw that there was a vacuum regarding the Republican Party putting up a candidate for mayor, and so I see a path to victory here in San Diego," Hansen said. Hansen, an ardent supporter of President Trump, is a former Democrat who left that party in 2016. He never re-registered with a party because he said he took issue with elitists in both the Democrat and Republican Parties. Hansen said, however, that he aligns with President Trump on issues such as the Second Amendment, the Border Wall, and abortion. "I just felt that Donald Trump, even though he is a billionaire, he's the blue collar billionaire," said Hansen, a real estate broker, who added he would serve the entire community as mayor. Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file nomination papers with the city of San Diego. The position is technically non-partisan. As it stands, Democrats outnumber Republicans in registration by a near two to one margin, 318,507 to 162,004. Additionally, there are more decline-to-state voters, 242,522, than Republicans in the city. "It's a blue city," said John Dadian, a political analyst. "We may have a super-duper majority on the City Council of Democrats, maybe more than exists right now, so it's just not feasible, quite honestly."A recent 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll found Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry in the race. Both are Democrats. It remains to be seen whether a household GOP candidate will emerge. Tony Krvaric, who heads the Republican Party of San Diego, said he did not know Hansen and that he has encouraged current City Councilman Scott Sherman to run. A spokesman for Sherman said the councilman is strongly considering a run and is hearing encouragement daily. Sherman is also termed out from his council seat in 2020. 2207
