After originally not having a briefing scheduled, the White House opted Tuesday afternoon to hold a briefing to deliver an update as cases of COVID-19 continue to increase nationwide. As of Tuesday afternoon, there are more than 51,000 coronavirus cases throughout the United States, according to John Hopkins University data. In the last two days, the tone coming from the White House has shifted from one of preparedness to one of trying to reopen segments of the economy. On Monday, President Donald Trump said that “we cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself," suggesting that the economic impact of the nation's coronavirus response could be worse than the spread of the virus. Trump said that he believes that the United States can “do both” protect lives and reopen the economy. On Tuesday, Trump said on Fox News that he has a goal to have the economy “opened up and just raring to go by Easter.”At the White House's briefing on Tuesday, Trump said that data would inform his decision. But when asked why he made Easter a target date, he said that it's a "special day."Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has been advising the White House through this crisis, said that any goals should be flexible. But Trump’s approach is at odds of many state governors and health directors. In New York, which has seen nearly half the number of US cases of coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave a dire proclamation of what is to happen in the weeks to come. “FEMA says we're sending 400 ventilators. Really? What am I going to do 400 ventilators when I need 30,000?” Cuomo said. “You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die because you only sent 400 ventilators.”Meanwhile, the US Senate is nearing an agreement on a multi-trillion-dollar bill to offer assistance to companies and individuals affected by the economic impacts of the coronavirus. "I just finished a very productive meeting with secretary Mnuchin, the white house congressional liaison Eric Ueland and Mark Meadows, the president's acting chief of staff,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “Last night, I thought we were on the five yard line. Right now we're on the two.” 2150

A site on the Detroit River that was used to produce radioactive materials during World War II collapsed last week, raising concerns about whether the adjacent water supply is safe to drink. While officials in the United States say the water is free of radioactivity, the city of Windsor on the Canadian side is raising concerns.Canadian member of Parliament Brian Masse released a statement Thursday from his office, which alleged that, "on November 27, 2019, the Revere Copper Site on the American side of the Detroit River collapsed most likely due to the weight of the aggregate stored by Detroit Bulk Storage on site."Masse later provided a letter to Canada's House of Commons further expressing his concerns and calling for both the US and Canadian governments to work together to assess any possible threat."Forty million people use the Great Lakes for drinking water, and the ecosystem is already fragile," Masse said. "Any potential threat should be investigated immediately on both sides of the border."Attempts to reach Masse Friday were not successful. The Great Lakes Water Authority, which is responsible for the welfare of drinking water for residents in the southeast Michigan-area, said in a statement that its water is safe to drink."Because [the intake location] is upstream of the site, there is no danger of any potential water quality issues from the collapse," GLWA spokesperson Ashleigh Chatel told CNN via email. While the exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined, Nick Assendelft, the public information officer for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, said Friday that EGLE had dispatched 20 officials to the site, which is about four miles south of downtown Detroit. EGLE inspected the site in the spring and found no radioactive threat, Assendelft said."We certainly want to do robust investigation to get all the answers and information so we can determine possible next steps," Assendelft said.American authorities agree water is safe, but 2011 survey acknowledges contamination potentialThe property is owned by Grand Rapids-based Erickson Group, which has been leasing the site to Detroit Bulk Storage since July 2019.The storage company, its owner, Noel Frye, and The Erickson Group did not return requests for comment. The EGLE posted on Twitter that it was actively investigating the site Friday by taking radioactivity measurements and footage of the area. Assendelft added EGLE is also using boats to test water samples for radioactivity.John Roach, a spokesman for the city of Detroit, told CNN that EGLE is directly handling the situation because the state is responsible for the property's environmental welfare. But in an emailed statement, city government echoed EGLE's sentiments and said "EGLE informs us that there is no reason for health or environmental concern among Detroit residents at this time."The EPA confirmed its involved in the investigation. It conducted its own radiation surveys in 1981 and 1989 but found no abnormal radioactivity, the agency said in a statement to CNN. While the EPA did not mention any more recent surveys, it cited EGLE's survey earlier this year. However, a 3189

A Republican congressman who used much of his allotted questioning time during former special counsel Robert Mueller's congressional hearing on Wednesday to defend President Donald Trump has been under consideration for a job within the administration, sources tell CNN."I agree with the chairman, this morning, when he said Donald Trump is not above the law. He's not. But he damn sure shouldn't be below the law, which is where volume two of this report puts him," Rep. John Ratcliffe said of Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. The Texas Republican's statement was one of several from Trump's Republican allies on the Hill, who have questioned Mueller's handling of the investigation and his credibility.Ratcliffe, who has served in Congress since 2015, argued during Mueller's hearing before the House Judiciary Committee that in the second volume of the report, Mueller offered "extra-prosecutorial analysis about crimes that weren't charged" and accused the former special counsel of breaking Justice Department regulations by doing so.Ratcliffe has been under consideration for a job within the Trump administration, sources told CNN, including an intelligence or national security role. The congressman speaks with the President often, and Trump is a big fan of his, the sources said. The congressman's name was floated last year as a possible replacement for former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was eventually succeeded by William Barr.Ratcliffe, a former federal prosecutor, has been critical of the way the Democrats on the committee have approached Mueller's investigation after it ended, arguing in April against the panel authoring a subpoena for an underacted version of the report."Let Bob Mueller come, and let's ask Bob Mueller to come and whether or not he thinks the report he created should be disclosed without considerations of redactions for classified national security information, or without redactions for grand jury information or other information related to ongoing investigations," he said at the time. 2078
