BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Zhu Guangya, who contributed to the development of China's first atom and hydrogen bombs, died Saturday at age 87.Zhu was a senior academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He served as vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, between 1994 and 2003.Born in central China's Yichang city, Zhu obtained a PhD in nuclear physics from the University of Michigan in 1950. That year he returned to China. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1956.

BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange watchdog said Thursday that the surplus of Chinese banks' foreign exchange purchases to sales in client transactions increased 51 percent through 2010 to stand at 397.7 billion U.S. dollars at year-end.China' s institutional and individual clients sold 1.33 trillion U.S. dollars in foreign exchange to banks in 2010 while purchasing 932.7 billion U.S. dollars, said the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) in an online statement.In 2009, the annual surplus fell 42 percent to 263.5 billion U.S. dollars, according to SAFE's data released in March 2010.The statement noted the figures did not include banks' own forex transactions and interbank transactions.The forex surplus in December 2010 totaled 51.5 billion U.S. dollars, as clients sold 146.2 billion U.S. dollars of foreign exchange, up 13 percent from November, while purchasing 94.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 12 percent, it said.Chinese banks received 1.89 trillion U.S. dollars for their clients in overseas business in 2010 and paid 1.59 trillion U.S. dollars to overseas business, it added.The SAFE only began releasing monthly and quarterly data on bank foreign exchange transactions in 2010.

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday ordered local governments to increase funding for affordable housing projects, stressing that the construction of 10 million units was a mandatory task that must be fulfilled this year.Speaking at a national conference on affordable housing for low and middle income groups, Li said that the construction of 10 million affordable housing units this year is of great significance for the government to stabilize public expectations, control housing prices, improve people's lives and boost domestic consumption."Housing is imperative for people's lives and local governments must waste no time in beginning the construction of 10 million affordable housing units this year and putting them into service as early as possible," Li said.To facilitate the government's subsidized affordable housing projects, Li said that local governments should ensure basic market supply with small units and guide the public to "reasonable consumption."More efforts are also needed to develop low-rent public housing and satisfy the demands of residents for affordable public housing, Li said. To support the construction of affordable housing, local governments can use tax breaks, determine the rent for public housing reasonably and finance construction projects in different ways, such as bank loans and social investment, he added.Li also called on local governments to increase land supplies for common commercial housing construction. BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry said here Thursday that almost all Chinese travellers stranded in Egypt had returned home by planes sent by the government.A total of 1,848 Chinese, including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, had been flown back by Thursday afternoon, the ministry said in a statement.The Chinese government has organized eight flights from four Chinese airline companies to Egypt since Jan. 31.The last two planes, belonging to China Eastern Airlines, returned to Beijing from Egypt Thursday, bringing back a total of 431 Chinese citizens, according to the ministry.
