SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- On Wednesday, San Diego County health officials reported seven new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the regions total to 406.Healthcare workers witness this firsthand; many have been by their patients' side during the final moments."We hold their hands, we let them talk to their loved ones through electronic devices," said Dr. Salam Yatooma, an internal medicine physician at Sharp Grossmont. "It's very painful, actually the most stressful thing for us doctors and especially nurses."In his twelve years at the hospital, Yatooma said he has never witnessed anything like this.Yatooma has been on the frontlines since the pandemic began, and while many people have let their guards down, he reminds everyone the virus hasn't gone anywhere. Healthcare workers haven't had a break."There has been an increase, a significant increase, in the number of patients of hospitalizations that we see," he said. "It's definitely correlated with the relaxing of restrictions that the state and county are implementing. People were not wearing masks. People continued to have large gatherings, especially indoors, and people were not socially distancing. Unfortunately, this is going to start to show more and more now."Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said in the last seven days, there have been 24 community COVID-19 outbreaks.The latest outbreaks reported happened in a healthcare setting, a restaurant or bar, a gym, a daycare, and a resort or spa.The outbreaks in community settings are defined as three or more positive COVID-19 cases in people from different households.To date, there have been 17,842 positive cases locally, about 11 percent have required hospitalization, according to the county health officials.Yatooma said while most hospitalized patients he has seen are older in age with underlying health issues, over the last several weeks, there has been a new trend."We did notice there's been an increasing number in the younger people," he said. "20 to 40-years-old."He said he doesn't expect things to slow down at hospitals in the coming months as more people head out, especially during flu season."This is a very dangerous trend we're going into. In the coming few months that we start having the flu," Yatooma said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As San Diego County awaits state guidance on how to move forward with reopening different sectors, a local church continues to defy public health orders by operating inside.Under the current public health order, religious services may continue outside with social distancing in place.Awaken Church was sent a cease and desist letter from the county’s public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, for operating inside in July.A month later, the church is defying the health order again by resuming indoor operations on Sunday, August 23, the church’s 15th anniversary. Services and locations are posted on the church's website. A video on the church’s website shows pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius speaking about why they have decided to reopen. The two said it was time to reopen and that “fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost; it’s essential.”In the video, the pastors say that the governor and county officials continue to keep churches under strict regulations, which prevents them from meeting the needs of their congregation.“Sadly, we’ve had five people connected to our church that have lost their lives, not from the virus but because of the virus. This was due to many factors, including suicide, drug overdose, and severe neglect from a hospital who was primarily focused on their COVID patients,” said Leanna Matthesius in the video.While county supervisor Nathan Fletcher acknowledged the importance of religious freedom and constitutional rights, he spoke of his frustrations with the church at a county COVID-19 press conference Monday. “It is very frustrating to see an entity that has an avenue to gather that is allowable, that is acceptable, that is much safer, choose to openly defy that in order to expose the members of their congregation to a very dangerous situation,” said Fletcher. “Just gather outdoors, physically distance, and wear a face covering.”Under the county’s public health order, houses of worship can continue to operate if “outdoor services and cultural ceremonial activities may be conducted provided all persons practice social distancing.”A county spokesperson tells ABC 10News that the church isn’t facing additional action from the county as of right now.ABC 10News reached out to Awaken Church for further comment but did not hear back. 2380

San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount.
