Beginning in the fall of 2023, all California State University students will be required to take a three-unit ethnic studies or social justice course to graduate.“Automatic yes,” said Jose Juan Rodriguez Gutierrez Hernandez Estrada, a wildlife biology major at Humboldt State University. “I’m glad that’s something that’s going to be required.”In addition to his studies, Rodriguez also makes music about social issues and also plays on the HSU men's rugby team.For the student-athlete, this change in curriculum shows a commitment to much needed change.“I feel like making ethnic studies would go a long way, not just for students of color but for our society in general,” he said.University leaders say these courses will have their own section in the general education curriculum, as social science requirements have been lowered from nine to six units.“We feel that it really is time to make this change,” said Alison Wrynn, Ph.D., CSU associate vice chancellor.Wrynn says this decision is the first major change to the CSU system’s general education requirements in 40 years.“Whether you’re an engineer or a nurse, it’s important for you to understand the communities you’re working with as you make those professional discipline-based decisions,” she said.Some college leaders, however, say this change is not nearly enough“We are absolutely opposed to it,” said Charles Toombs, Ph.D., a professor of Africana Studies at San Diego State University.Toombs is also president of the California Faculty Association, the union that represents the 29,000 faculty members in the CSU system and a group he says was not included enough in the decision making.“The BOT (Board of Trustees) did not listen to our voices,” he said. “CSU’s proposal is diluting what ethnic studies is; it’s trying to include everything in ethnic studies.”Toombs and other representatives from the CFA are pushing for Assembly Bill 1460 – which would require students to take a class focusing on one of four ethnic groups: African Americans, Latin X, Asian Americans and indigenous groups.“It will actually give students essential knowledge that they need in the 21st century,” Toombs said.As the bill sits on the California governor’s desk, Rodriguez believes these new requirements are a good start for future change.“I feel like these lessons we can take with us and teach to our children, teach to the next generations,” he said. 2415

BOSTON (AP) — Authorities in a city north of Boston have captured an emu after the large flightless bird was spotted roaming local streets. The Eagle-Tribune reports that the animal named Kermit escaped from the property of a Haverhill resident as she was preparing to relocate it to a farm in Maine. Native to Australia, Emus are the world's largest bird after the ostrich and can reach nearly 100 pounds and a height of almost six feet. Authorities in Haverhill caught the bird two hours after it was sighted. They say an animal control officer enticed the emu by feeding it a pear from a nearby pear tree. 616

Body camera video released Friday shows YouTube shooter Nasim Aghdam telling Mountain View Police she had no plans for violence hours before she opened fire at the company's San Bruno headquarters.The police recording shows officers identify Aghdam’s car in a Walmart parking lot in Mountain View at about 1:30 a.m. PT on April 3. Less than 12 hours later, Aghdam would open fire in a courtyard at the YouTube campus, injuring three people before turning the gun on herself. Mountain View Police said the license plate showed Aghdam's vehicle was linked to a San Diego missing persons report filed by her family. The Mountain View Police Department (MVPD) said seven record systems were checked during this time, including the Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS). The APPS cross-references records of persons who lawfully purchased weapons with the records of those who are prohibited from owning them. The systems checks for Aghdam came back negative, police said.Two officers knocked on the window and woke up Aghdam, who had been sleeping in the back seat. During their conversation, officers asked Aghdam if she knew her family in San Diego had reported her missing.“We didn’t get along together so I left them,” Aghdam said. She explained that she didn’t get along with her father and drove straight to Mountain View from San Diego. Aghdam also said she went to Northern California to start fresh in a place without memories.Officers asked Aghdam if she was taking medication or needed to take medication. She shook her head, “no."During questioning, Aghdam also told officers that she didn’t want to hurt herself or anyone else, and had no plans to commit suicide.Shortly after the police body camera recording ended, one of the officers called Aghdam’s family in San Diego to report that she had been found. Her father, Ismail Aghdam, answered the phone and confirmed that he had not been getting along with his daughter, police said. He thanked officers for the call and hung up.One hour later, the father called Mountain View Police to let them know his daughter had recently become upset about changes on the YouTube platform that had impacted videos she had created on living a vegan lifestyle, police said. The father suggested that may have been one of the reasons Aghdam was in Mountain View.Scripps station KGTV in San Diego talked with Aghdam’s family at their home in Menifee the evening of April 3. They said that they tried to warn authorities before the shooting.The family said she felt she reached the most people through her YouTube page but her relationship with the company turned ugly when YouTube changed its filters and she began to lose followers and viewers."I Googled 'Mountain View' and it was close to YouTube headquarters, and she had a problem with YouTube," her brother said. "So I called that cop again and told him there’s a reason she went all the way from San Diego to there, so she might do something."Mountain View Police said that during their call, Aghdam’s father did not bring up any concerns about his daughter’s behavior, any potential for violence, or a likelihood that she could be a danger to herself or others.RELATED: Female shooters are rare, YouTube attacker joins short list“A review of the incident revealed that our officers followed proper procedure and protocol. Brittany Littleton started “Little Luv Rescue” straight out of high school, taking in abused and neglected animals.“Animals are my favorite part of life, I would say,” Littleton says. “They’re just like pure, innocent beings.”When the wildfires hit southern California, Littleton didn’t hesitate to do what she does best: rescue animals. As everyone else was fleeing, Littleton drove into a fire evacuation zone to rescue livestock.“The fire came to the top of the hill, and it was like you could feel the heat from hundreds of feet away,” Littleton recalls.Littleton and other volunteers herded sheep, goats, horses, and even turtles, into their vehicles. But they realized they had nowhere to put them.Then, Cesar Millan, popularly known as “The Dog Whisperer,” stepped up to help.“I was raised on a farm, so I’m a farm boy. I had a pack of dogs and pigs and chickens, so to me, this is normal,” Millan says.Millan took in and tended to the rescued livestock. Many of them needed more care than others, like one llama saved from the wildfires.“So now, the little baby maggots are coming out,” Millan says, while tending to the llama.The animal was malnourished and had an infection. In a way, the wildfire evacuation may have been a blessing in disguise.“In her case, it actually saved her life completely,” he says. “Medically, emotionally, spiritually, everything. We were not counting on looking at this.”An extreme case like that one only underscores why Littleton fell in love with rescues in the first place.“I think everyone has that sense of like wanting to protect the innocent and animals are the innocent, and they can’t get themselves out and we have them,” Littleton says. “And people have purchased them or bred them or whatever, rescued them, and now have put them in a situation where they rely on us, so we can’t turn our backs on them. We have to get them out to safety because we are the ones who are responsible for that.” 1957
