SINGAPORE, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here on Monday with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Both leaders reaffirmed the close and cooperative relationship shared by Singapore and China.Xi's visit caps a series of high level exchanges as the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He said the two countries have forged close cooperation in various areas, adding that Singapore is willing to further enhance cooperation with China in bilateral and multi-lateral areas.After the meeting, Lee and Xi witnessed the signing of the following three agreements: the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Heritage Board of the Republic of Singapore and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China on Museum Cooperation; the Agreement on the Details of Implementation between the National University of Singapore and Suzhou Municipal Government (Suzhou Industrial Park Administrative Committee) on the Joint Establishment of the National University of Singapore (Suzhou) Research Institute; and the MOU on the Establishment of a Cooperative College by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city.At the invitation of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Xi arrived in Singapore on Sunday for a three-day official visit.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese state councilor said on Friday that the Confucius Institute is facing a "new starting point", calling for increased cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries via the institution.While addressing the opening ceremony of the fifth conference of Confucius Institutes in Beijing, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said that the institute is being offered new opportunity given exchanges of the diverse cultures in the world and China's wider opening-up."After five years' development, the Confucius Institute is now standing at a new starting point," said Liu, also president of the Confucius Institute headquarters council.The Confucius Institute, named after ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, is a non-profit public institution which aims to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries.Up to now, China has set up more than 320 Confucius Institutes in 96 countries around the globe since the first one was established in 2004, said Liu.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also attended the opening ceremony of the annual conference.

CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage.In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing.The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese and U.S. military officials will exchange visits in 2011, a Chinese Defense Ministry official said here Friday.The two sides have agreed that U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will visit China from Jan. 10 to Jan. 14, 2011, and Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), will visit the United States at a mutually convenient date in 2011, Guan Youfei, deputy director of the ministry's Foreign Affairs Office, told a press conference.The news briefing was held after defense consultations between China and the United States on Friday, which was co-chaired by Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the PLA, and U.S. Under Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy.Guan Youfei, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chinese Defense Ministry, gestures during a press conference in Washington Dec. 10, 2010.
