SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mysterious Galaxy served the Clairemont community for 27 years before the threat of closing reared its head.In November, the sci-fi bookstore announced they would have to close their doors after nearly three decades with their lease set to expire in January 2020.But as the final chapter of this local gem neared, two heroes emerged to continue the Mysterious Galaxy's story.RELATED: Poway's 'Disneyland for discount hunters' to close next yearLongtime customers Matt Berger and Jenni Marchisotto announced on the store's website that they have purchased the store and will move it to a shopping center in San Diego's Midway District."One thing we would like you to know above all else is that we, like you, are fans of Mysterious Galaxy," Berger and Marchisotto wrote. "We love Mysterious Galaxy for the same reasons you do and know that it will survive, will be saved, only because of your continued support."The new location will reside at 3555 Rosecrans Street. The existing staff will also stay on board for the store's next chapter, the owners say."We know the expert team of booksellers is much of what makes Mysterious Galaxy special. The store wouldn’t be the same without them," the pair wrote.RELATED: Beloved North Park newsstand closing after 70 yearsFormer owners Terry Gilman, Maryelizabeth Yturralde, and Jeff Mariotte opened Mysterious Galaxy in 1993. The store has served as a popular stop for everything science fiction, mystery, and fantasy for local readers. While local stores like the now-closed Villainous Lair and Adams Avenue Bookstore faced an uphill battle, Berger and Marchisotto hope to write a different future."As we begin this next chapter, we want to keep all that makes Mysterious Galaxy special while continuing to expend its presence in the community," the new owners added.RELATED: Gallery says gentrification is forcing them out of Barrio LoganThe number of independent bookstores has increased in the U.S. every year for the last decade, though retail sales have remained down, according to the American Booksellers Association. The appeal for these stores, though, is something readers can't get with a mouse click online."Moving forward, we plan to uphold all that makes Mysterious Galaxy special. We respect and value the store’s reputation as an integral part of the literary community in San Diego ... We have always seen Mysterious Galaxy as a safe place for anyone interested in exploring new worlds and never want that to change," the owners say. 2521

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Organizations announced beefed-up fire crews across Southern California Thursday morning, anticipating the Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service.Years prior illustrate how devastating a spark during a serious wind event can be."There's places all over the county that haven't burned in quite a while," Cal Fire Captain Issac Sanchez said.RELATED: Gusty Santa Ana winds, dry conditions prompt Red Flag Warning for San Diego CountyMeteorologist Megan Parry said this is the second driest year on record. That means there's much more dry brush. The National Weather Service said fuel moisture is near record low levels.A bad recipe for fire danger with, "the east winds coming out of the desert area... The low humidity that's coming along with it, and the warmer than average temperatures," Sanchez said.Sanchez asked everyone to do their part, "to get your defensible clearance in and be careful when you're out and about in order to avoid accidentally starting a fire," so they can protect your home.LATEST WEATHER FORECASTHe advised against using powered tools like chainsaws and lawnmowers, saying if they hit a rock, they could spark. Instead, he suggests using hand tools to clear away dry, dead brush. If you're driving or towing anything, make sure nothing is dragging from your car, or rig, that could cause sparks to fly. Also, he said there are lots of tools out there to help you get prepared. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Opening statements started Wednesday in the trial of a father accused of killing his two children in a fire at his Rancho Bernardo condo in 2017. Investigators said Henry Lopez passed out drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a fire that spread to the rest of the home. His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, died as a result of smoke inhalation. Lopez was also hospitalized with burns. Lopez’ ex-wife Nikia testified at his preliminary hearing in February 2018, saying the couple was in the custody of a divorce. Nikia Lopez also said her ex-spouse was an abusive alcoholic. RELATED: Mother opens up about children killed in fire"He drank a lot. My goal was to keep it from the kids. I would wake up in the middle of the night and throw away the bottles in the trash. I would pull him upstairs before the kids woke in the morning... sometimes I would have to clean up his throw up,” Nikia Lopez said in earlier testimony. Lopez faces up to 14 years in prison for several felony counts including involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of the most anticipated panels of Comic-Con Day 2 was "The Walking Dead" Panel. Fans left Hall H with several surprises for the upcoming season. If you're a Comic-Con mega fan, patience is a vital part of the experience. Many slept on the grassy courtyard for hours, just to claim a seat inside the coveted Hall H. Fans say they can't get enough. "I've been a fan since the first season came out," Superfan, Marvin Calderon said. "I'm also a fan of the comic books."Calderon showed us his right arm. It is entirely covered with "The Walking Dead" themed tattoos, proving to us, his extreme loyalty to the show.Friday's panel featured the showrunner, Angela Kang, her executive producers, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, and Greg Nicotero, as well as cast members Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Cooper Andrews, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming. This was 12-year-old Cailey Fleming's first Comic-Con experience, and she stole the show. Fans were impressed by her ability to handle the crowd and mingle with the cast."She is awesome," Calderon said about her. "The sheer fact that she doesn't seem to be scared of anything that the show can throw at her."Perhaps the biggest surprise was from Danai Gurira, who plays "Michonne." Fighting back tears, she announced her departure from the show, after Season 10."This has been one of the purest joys of my life to play this role, and to be amongst these people," Gurira said. Fans teared up as they listened to her farewell speech. Gurira thanked her fans for their unconditional support. She said it was a decision she did not take lightly, and that she hoped to follow her other callings. "My heart breaks," fan Katherine Butler said. "But I wish her luck because I loved her in Marvel. So she's going to do well no matter where she goes."As for Calderon, he says his tattoo is forever. "Michonne" will always be with him, even after her departure. "I have been a fan for a while, and I can definitely say I am a huge fan. I don't think I will lose my fandom," Calderon said. 2178
