SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today publicly identified a U.S. Border Patrol agent who fatally shot a Mexican national last month during a scuffle just north of the international line in San Ysidro.Ryan Gonsalves, a nine-year member of the federal agency who is assigned to its Imperial Beach station, opened fire on 30-year-old David Angel Villalobos-Baldovinos early on the evening of Oct. 23 near Las Americas Premium Outlets mall on Camino De La Plaza, according to the San Diego Police Department. The events that led to the deadly gunfire began about 5:45 p.m., when Villalobos-Baldovinos allegedly tried to enter the United States illegally and was confronted by Gonsalves, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said. When the agent tried to detain Villalobos-Baldovinos, a struggle broke out. During the fracas, the lawman shot the suspect once in the upper body.Gonsalves suffered minor injuries during the fight, Brown said. The SDPD Homicide Unit was called in to investigate the case, as is standard protocol in all instances of law enforcement shootings in the city. The findings of the probe will subsequently be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney's office, the lieutenant said. 1175

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a BNSF freight train at the Old Town Transit Station in San Diego, authorities said this morning.Officers responded to the station, in the 4000 block of Taylor Street near Congress Street, at 9:25 p.m. Friday and found the victim dead at the scene, according to Deputy Brian Abraham of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The age, gender and name of the victim were not disclosed.Anyone with information about this incident was asked to call the sheriff's department at 858-565-5200. 553

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was previously acquitted of a 12-year-old Escondido girl's murder was released from county jail this week, months after he was charged with being a felon at a county jail.Richard Raymond Tuite, 51, was released Thursday after a judge set his bail at SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was sentenced to nearly a decade in state prison for crashing a pickup truck over the side of a transition ramp to the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, killing four people and injuring several others when it landed in Chicano Park below, was released from state prison Friday.Richard Anthony Sepolio, 28, was released Friday morning after serving two years and 10 months of his nine-year, eight-month sentence, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office confirmed.Sepolio was convicted by a jury last year of four counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of DUI causing injury. Prosecutors say he drank prior to getting behind the wheel -- but was found to be below the legal blood-alcohol limit -- was speeding and attempted to cut off another driver just before his truck careened off the bridge and landed in the park below.RELATED: San Diego DA protests early release of driver who plummeted off Coronado Bridge, killing fourThe Oct. 15, 2016, crash killed Annamarie Contreras, 50, and Cruz Contreras, 52, a married couple from Chandler, Arizona; and Hacienda Heights residents Andre Banks, 49, and Francine Jimenez, 46. Seven other people were seriously injured. The DA's Office said the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation "surprised" victims and prosecutors on Monday with the notification that Sepolio would be released. CDCR records indicate he was going to be eligible for parole in April. The CDCR cited "various prison credits for good behavior as well as its policy of releasing inmates early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were no specific reasons cited related to this defendant," according to the DA's Office."This very early release is unconscionable," San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement released earlier this week. "CDCR's decision is re-victimizing the family and friends of the four people killed and seven injured who have been devastated by their loss and continue to deal with the financial, emotional, mental and physical trauma caused by the defendant. This inmate continues to deny and minimize the crime by refusing to admit he was speeding and denying being impaired while arguing with his girlfriend on the phone, which resulted in the devastating crash."Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright told jurors Sepolio chose "to drive irritated, impaired and impatient." In addition to having drinks prior to getting behind the wheel, Sepolio was arguing with his girlfriend on the phone just moments before losing control of his truck on the bridge, the prosecutor said.Sepolio testified he was driving on the transition ramp -- a route back to Coronado that he had driven more than 90 times before -- when he sped up to merge in front of another car and lost control. Prosecutors said he was driving between 81 and 87 mph when the crash occurred. 2883 for a single felony count of being an ex-con on prison grounds or adjacent lands, one of several offenses now being set at <云转化_句子> bail in an effort to reduce jail populations since the COVID-19 pandemic began. He was charged in January for allegedly being at a corrections facility while having prior convictions that include burglary, bribery and escape from a jail. Details on why Tuite was at the jail remain unclear.RELATED: Investigation: Who killed Stephanie Crowe?Tuite had been in custody since January following the arrest, and his criminal case was recently reinstated after he was previously found mentally incompetent to stand trial. He's due back in court Sept. 24 for a preliminary hearing.Tuite was previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 13 years in state prison in the well-publicized case regarding the stabbing death of seventh-grader Stephanie Crowe, but his conviction was later overturned and he was acquitted in a 2013 retrial.Crowe's body was found sprawled in the doorway of her bedroom by her grandmother early on the morning of Jan. 21, 1998. She had been stabbed nine times. Her older brother, Michael, and two of his friends, Aaron Houser and Joshua Treadway, initially were accused of committing the murder, and police extracted confessions from two of them during lengthy interrogations. The admissions were later ruled to have been coerced, and the charges against the boys were dismissed. During Tuite's retrial, the now-adult former suspects testified that they had no involvement in Stephanie's death.Tuite had been in the area of the Crowe residence the night the girl was killed. He was agitated and looking for a woman named Tracy, according to prosecutors, who contended that the disheveled and seemingly confused transient wandered into the Crowe home and attacked the girl.Investigators, however, found no physical evidence directly linking him to the crime scene.Analysts later found the victim's blood on two shirts that Tuite had been wearing on the day of the murder. Jurors who voted to acquit Tuite said they believed a defense theory of "contamination," in which blood from the crime scene somehow wound up transferred onto Tuite's clothing.More than two decades after the murder, two families reacted Friday after Tuite was released in the current case."I'm absolutely pleased. He is not a danger to anyone and doesn't belong in jail," said Tuite's sister, Kerry Licon."Richard Tuite, free, walking the streets after murdering my child, is our family's daily struggle to cope with. The absence of integrity, common sense - mixed in with qualified immunity - isn't just worrisome for us. It is a threat to everyone's safety!" said Stephanie's mother, Cheryl Crowe. 3019
