Unrest in Minneapolis continued on Thursday as the Minnesota National Guard was activated as protests and looting continued in the city. Nearly 500 members of the Guard have been activated. "Our mission is to protect life, preserve property and the right to peacefully demonstrate. A key objective is to ensure fire departments are able to respond to calls," the National Guard said late Thursday. The protests were sparked following the death of George Floyd, a black Minnesota man who died in police custody after a police officer held a knee against Floyd’s neck for several minutes. Floyd’s death caused outrage from politicians and civil rights activists as the public revisited tensions between police and the black community. While protest organizers have called for peaceful demonstrations, some have not heeded the call. The tensions reached a fever pitch on Wednesday as several Minneapolis businesses were looted. As protests grew on Thursday, Gov. Tim Walz called for the assistance of the National Guard to handle the protests and riots. "We are ready and prepared to answer the Governor's request. We are currently in process of assigning and preparing units to respond," said Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen. The protests continued to grow late Thursday. Protesters burned dozens of buildings, including a police substation.Protesters, along with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have called on charges to be filed against Derek Chauvin, the now fired officer who held a knee to Floyd's neck.Unrest also escalated in neighboring St. Paul on Thursday as police deployed tear gas on demonstrators there. 1613

US District Court Judge Gray Miller ruled late Friday that the Military Selective Service Act's male-only registration is unconstitutional. The challenge was brought by a group known as National Coalition for Men and two men subject to the registration requirements. The Selective Service System had argued that the case was controlled by a 1981 Supreme Court ruling, Rostker v. Goldberg, that said women could be excluded from the draft because they were not "similarly situated" with men for draft purposes. That decision highlighted the fact that women could not serve in combat."In the nearly four decades since Rostker, however, women's opportunities in the military have expanded dramatically. In 2013, the Department of Defense officially lifted the ban on women in combat," Miller, of the Southern District of Texas, wrote."In short," he concluded, "while historical restrictions on women in the military may have justified past discrimination, men and women are now similarly situated for purposes of a draft or registration for a draft. If there ever was a time to discuss the place of women in the Armed Services, that time has based. Defendants have not carried the burden of showing that the male-only registration requirement continues to be substantially related to Congress's objective of raising and supporting armies."Miller did not issue an injunction against the federal policy.A National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service has been studying the issue. All men ages 18-25 are required by law to provide basic personal information to the Selective Service System. 1609

Vitamin E acetate, in combination with THC, may be to blame for a national outbreak of e-cigarette-related lung injuries that's linked to dozens of deaths, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials.Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, said she would characterize it as a breakthrough in the agency's investigation, although more tests are necessary."These new findings are significant," Schuchat said during a press briefing on Friday. "We have a strong culprit."There is still more work to do and the CDC said it is continuing to test for a wide range of chemicals."This does not rule out other possible ingredients," Schuchat said. "There may be more than one cause."The CDC says its tests found vitamin E acetate in samples taken from 29 patients who were sick with vaping-related illness in 10 states. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, or its metabolites were detected in 23 of 28 patients.During the press briefing, CDC's Dr. James Pirkle described vitamin E acetate as "enormously sticky" when it goes into the lungs, and it "does hang around." Pirkle said it wouldn't be unusual for THC to be absent from some of the samples because it leaves the lungs faster. He added finding THC in 82% of the samples from 28 patients was "noteworthy."In September, New York health officials linked cases of severe lung illness to vitamin E acetate in cannabis-containing vaping products. At the time, investigators said it was "a key focus" of the state's investigation into the illnesses. An investigation into the link between vaping and severe lung illnesses has yielded the discovery of extremely high levels of the chemical vitamin E acetate in nearly all cannabis-containing vaping products that were analyzed, New York health officials said Thursday.Until the investigation is complete, the CDC suggests people refrain from using all vaping products with THC, no matter where people buy them. The investigation has found that many of these products patients used were bought online or received through friends or family, rather than through vaping shops or at licensed THC dispensaries.Vitamin E is used in several products, such as lotions and in supplements, but the CDC said there is a "big difference" in putting vitamin E on the skin or swallowing it in pill and in inhaling the oily vitamin.Dr. Jennifer Layden, the chief medical officer and state epidemiologist with the Illinois Department of Public Health, said in the press briefing that in her state, they found the majority of cases of the people who were sick used THC, and that their materials came from "informal sources." In Illinois, she said, they had not had any cases associated with the state's medical marijuana program. So far, there have been 2,051 cases of vaping associated illnesses, reported in every state, except for Alaska, as of November 5. States have reported at least 40 deaths. 2979
