SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- AOL's chief executive officer (CEO) Tim Armstrong has reached out to Yahoo for talks of a merger of the two companies, U.S. media reported on Friday.Armstrong is discussing options for a combination aimed at strengthening the two Internet companies, Bloomberg quoted two people who are familiar with the matter as saying.The report said that the AOL CEO had been interested in a merger with Yahoo last year but was rejected while Carol Bartz served as Yahoo CEO, who was ousted by Yahoo's board on Tuesday.Reconsidering the option after Bartz's departure, Armstrong has talked with private equity firms and investment bankers from Allen & Co. working with Yahoo.Under one scenario being considered, Yahoo would acquire AOL and Armstrong would become CEO of the combined company, said the source.Both Yahoo and AOL are suffering from declining revenues, struggling to compete against companies like Google and Facebook. Some analysts said that the merger could not provide a long-term solution to the problems the two companies face after they failed to keep up with Internet trends.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Monday launched a week-long campaign throughout the country which aims to make the public think more about food safety.Vice Premier Li Keqiang relayed to the campaign's organizer that it is essential to publicize knowledge and regulations on food safety among the public.Li, member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that special operations and severe punishment should be adopted to decrease the likelihood of food safety scandals.As part of the campaign, a food safety inspection team under the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee held a conclusive meeting in Beijing to review its two-month supervisory tour to Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan and other four provinces and regions in April and May.A statement released by the inspection team on Monday said it will issue a report on food safety problems to the NPC Standing Committee.China's food safety has become a major public concern since a nationwide tainted milk powder scandal was exposed in August 2008.China's top legislature passed the Food Safety Law in 2009 which was soon followed by a nationwide food safety inspection.In the latest food safety scandal, drinks and food sold on the mainland but produced in Taiwan have been found to contain the toxic plasticizer DEHP.China's Ministries of Public Security, Agriculture, Health, as well as the General Administration for Quality Supervision, State Food and Drug Administration are also involved in the campaign.

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. space shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station on Sunday morning after nearly two days of flight.Commander Christopher Ferguson guided space shuttle Atlantis to a docking with the station at 11:07 a.m. EDT (1507 GMT) when the two spacecrafts were flying 240 miles up over east of New Zealand, according to NASA.This was the 12th and final time Atlantis docked to the space station. WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Latest research shows that the Moon could be younger than previous estimates. The findings were published online Wednesday in the Nature journal.The prevailing theory of the Moon's origin is that it was created by a giant impact between a large planet-like object and the proto-Earth. The energy of this impact was sufficiently high that the Moon formed from melted material that was ejected into space. As the Moon cooled, this magma solidified into different mineral components. Analysis of lunar rock samples thought to have been derived from the original magma has given scientists a new estimate of the Moon's age.According to this theory for lunar formation, a rock type called ferroan anorthosite, or FAN, is the oldest of the Moon's crustal rocks, but scientists have had difficulty dating FAN samples. The research team used newly refined techniques to determine the age of a sample of FAN from the lunar rock that was brought back to Earth by the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.The team analyzed the isotopes of the elements lead and neodymium to place the FAN sample's age at 4.36 billion years. This figure is significantly younger than earlier estimates of the Moon's age that range as old as the age of the solar system at 4. 568 billion years. The new, younger age obtained for the oldest lunar crust is similar to ages obtained for the oldest terrestrial minerals -- zircons from western Australia -- suggesting that the oldest crusts on both Earth and Moon formed at approximately the same time, and that this time dates from shortly after the giant impact.This study is the first in which a single sample of FAN yielded consistent ages from multiple isotope dating techniques. This result strongly suggests that these ages pinpoint the time at which the sample crystallized."The extraordinarily young age of this lunar sample either means that the Moon solidified significantly later than previous estimates, or that we need to change our entire understanding of the Moon's geochemical history," Carnegie Institute of Science's geochemist and study author Richard Carlson said.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The quality of the products China exported to the European Union (EU) improved during the first half of this year due to strict quality control measures, according to quality control authorities.The number of quality complaints made by the EU regarding Chinese imports declined by 45 percent in the first half of 2011, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).The administration attributed the improved quality to its nationwide crackdown on counterfeited and substandard products.The administration launched a nationwide quality checkup in the first half of this year. Of the 4,815 batches of products that the quality control authorities checked between January and June, just 9.4 percent failed quality tests, 1.7 percentage points lower than that of the same period of last year, according to the administration.A total of 218,000 counterfeiting cases have been investigated so far this year, involving goods worth a total of 9.5 billion yuan (1.49 billion U.S. dollars), the administration said.
