Travelers might be wise to check for flight delays before heading to the airport this week, especially if you have a flight to the Gulf Coast, Georgia or the Carolinas as Hurricane Michael disrupts air traffic. As of Tuesday evening, several commercial airports in Florida have announced closures in advance of the hurricane's landfall. Panama City Airport announced all flights for American, Delta, Southwest and United Airlines are canceled until at least Thursday morning. The airport says it anticipates a Thursday start-up, pending a post-storm assessment. Destin-Ft. Walton Beach Airport announced it will close at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday and remained closed until further notice. At Tallahassee International Airport, all commercial flights have been canceled for Wednesday with an expected resumption of 8 a.m. on Thursday. Pensacola Airport is also shutting down operations at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday until further notice. Delta said it is ferrying its fleet from the affected airports to Atlanta during the hurricane. Delta also announced it has capped fares in Destin, Panama City, Pensacola, Tallahassee, and Mobile, Ala. at 9 in Main Cabin and 9 in the forward cabin each way between Oct. 9 and Oct. 11.Southwest Airlines said starting Tuesday, October 9, through Sunday, October 14, it will waive the pet fare for customers traveling with small vaccinated domestic dogs or cats to/from the following cities: 1486

Thomson Reuters is eliminating 12 percent of its global workforce. The media company is drastically shrinking its staff, cutting 3,200 jobs and closing 55 offices by 2020. Reuters says it will employ roughly 23,800 people — down from its current workforce of 27,000.Reuters revealed its plans for the future at its annual investor day in Toronto. The stock is up 3 percent on the news."Thomson Reuters is routinely looking at ways to run our global business operations more efficiently and effectively," a Reuters spokesman told CNN Business."This disciplined approach sometimes includes the need to make personnel, or other, changes which allow us to balance our internal resources with the needs of our customers in a highly competitive environment."The company said a "majority" of the impacted employees have been notified, but it declined to say which divisions are affected.Part of Reuters' plans includes reducing its capital expenditures by 3 percent and cutting the number of products it sells. The company sells a newswire service, financial software, images and services for the legal industry. In October, Reuters sold a majority stake of its Financial and Risk unit to the private equity firm Blackstone Group for billion. To end the pandemic, there need to be enough people immune to COVID-19 and there are two ways to do that: immunity through infection or from a vaccine."I think racing to herd immunity is the dangerous thing that I’m concerned about," said Dr. Stuart Ray, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.Herd immunity is when the spread of the infection cannot be sustained because the number of people who are immune is high enough. Some countries are considering it as a strategy to combat COVID-19.But Ray said it could not work in the US unless much more effective treatments are developed. He says on average, a newly infected person infects two others, so to have herd immunity from COVID-19 about 60 percent of people would have to become immune."We would have something like another 100 million people, maybe more, infected. 150 million more and even if the major complication rate is a fraction of 1 percent, we will still have huge numbers of deaths," said Ray.He said we also don’t know if just having had the infection once will create lasting immunity to control the spread."It possible that you could be immune enough not to get sick and still not immune enough to prevent that spread and so herd immunity is a tough bar for us to aim for because not only do we need 60 percent of people to be immune but we need them to be immune in a way that prevents them from infecting other people," said Ray.The other way to achieve herd immunity would be through a vaccine."Vaccines can work better, provide better immunity than the natural infection does. The new shingles vaccine provides great immunity and protects more than 95 percent of people from getting shingles," said Ray.Several vaccines are still going through the last phase of clinical trials to see if any also creates enough immunity to prevent passing the virus along. This story was first reported by Abby Isaacs at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland. 1946

The Boston Red Sox made sure to savor their Game 4 win over the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series on Tuesday. The Red Sox played Frank Sinatra's edition of "New York, New York," a staple at Yankee Stadium, as they celebrated advancing to the American League Championship Series.Boston was merely returning the favor after Yankees star Aaron Judge had the song echoing throughout the inside of Fenway Park following New York's Game 2 victory on Saturday. The Yankees nearly erased what had been a 4-0 deficit Tuesday. They scored two runs in the ninth inning off Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel and had the tying and go-ahead runs on base when Gleyber Torres grounded out to end the game. The Red Sox are headed to the ALCS for the first time since their World Series victory in 2013.  833
