Education Secretary Betsy DeVos stood firm on her proposal to cut funds for the Special Olympics on Wednesday, arguing that the organization doesn't need federal backing because it can successfully raise private contributions."The Special Olympics is not a federal program. It's a private organization. I love its work, and I have personally supported its mission. Because of its important work, it is able to raise more than 0 million every year," DeVos said in a statement."There are dozens of worthy nonprofits that support students and adults with disabilities that don't get a dime of federal grant money. But given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations," she added.DeVos, one of the wealthier members of Trump's Cabinet, donated some of her salary last year to the group. Her statement followed an outpouring of criticism over her proposal to cut 12 percent from the department's budget -- the third year in a row she has called for eliminating funding for Special Olympic events at schools.Lawmakers have rejected DeVos' previous proposals, appropriating 1191

DETROIT — The Detroit City Council has canceled a stunt involving the car from the movie "Smokey and the Bandit" that was planned for an upcoming classic car show show because of the car's Confederate flag license plate. The high-flying jump involving the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am was to take place during the Detroit Autorama in early March. The move comes less than two years after the Autorama advertised a stunt at its 2017 show involving the General Lee from the "Dukes of Hazard" — the famous 1969 orange Dodge Charger emblazoned with a Confederate flag on its roof. The Autorama promised city council that the car involved would not include a Confederate flag, but did not keep its promise. This year's Autorama is the first show since the death of Burt Reynolds, who starred in "Smokey and the Bandit" and drove the Trans Am in the movie. The Detroit Autorama is a showcase for classic cars that's taken place in the city since 1953. 946
DENVER, Colo. – When it comes to businesses in America, women owned companies make up 40%. Although that number is on the rise, women are facing different challenges in order to achieve success.About 11.6 million businesses are owned by women, but Madhavan Parthasarathy, Director of Entrepreneurship at University of Colorado Denver, says a majority of those businesses are small. Parthasarathy says women aren’t achieving success at the same rate as men because they are outnumbered."The biggest challenge is to be taken serious,” said Parthasarathy. “It's not just a challenge starting a business but getting funding for a business.Besides landing investors, Parthasarathy says it's hard for women to find mentors and connect with a network of other entrepreneurs to help grow their businesses.Sarah Ortega with Sarah O. Jewelry knows a thing or two about the struggles of owning a business. Despite the disadvantages, she says women have an edge that helps them."We are humble people,” said Ortega. “We like to collaborate with other people and we really feel emotion."A downfall – women can be their own worst critics."If you can learn to take that negative self-talk and say ‘not today, not today, I’m not going to listen to you today. I’m going to grow and make something beautiful.’ If you can do that, that’s when things start to change."Male or female, both Ortega and Parthasarathy say mistakes will happen when owning your own business."That's one of the most important things about being an entrepreneur is to not get down and out on your mistakes," said Ortega. “If I make a mistake I go ‘okay cool where do we take that mistake and make it a learning and experience and grow from it.’" One company who's a big advocate of women owned businesses is Secret. Every Wednesday in the month of December, the company is encouraging people to shop at a woman owned business. 1893
