CARLSBAD, Calif., (KGTV) -- Nearly 200 active duty mothers and mothers who support active duty staff at Camp Pendleton, got a full day of pampering at the 12th Annual Military Mother's Day Brunch. 10News spoke to the Torres family. "Right now, Daddy's deployed," mother, Sonia Torres said. While her husband defends the country as Sgt. Major of Batallion 1-4, she defends the homefront as she cares for her two children, Jasmine and Al."My mom means the world to me. She does everything for me. Cook, kisses me good night, everything," 11-year-old Al said. With no family nearby, military mothers like Torres are in a unique parenting situation. They play the roles of both mom and dad. "Since Daddy left, we needed something to fill that void, and we found Tae Kwon Do. We [Al] went from white belt to yellow belt to orange belt, Friday night." Torres said proudly. They often witness milestones alone. Jasmine celebrated her 13th birthday yesterday. "My mom is well, there's no words to describe it. She's always there for me. I couldn't really ask more than that," Jasmine said. So they don't. The Torres children will spend the rest of their lives being Mama's Girl and Mama's Boy."When I'm in university or college, I would be really close to her because she's my number one fan," Al said. The event also helps connect mothers with resources and other people who understand the difficulties that come with being a military parent. 1442

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Brad Pitt, star of the new space movie "Ad Astra," had a burning question for a real-life astronaut."Who was more believable? Clooney or Pitt?"In a televised call Monday, NASA astronaut Nick Hague answered Pitt — "absolutely" — getting a big laugh. Pitt's Hollywood pal George Clooney starred in the 2013 space film "Gravity."Hague and the rest of the International Space Station crew previewed "Ad Astra" a few weeks ago. The movie opens Friday down here.Pitt portrays an astronaut who travels through the solar system to find his father. The film includes actual NASA shots of the moon and Mars."How'd we do? How was our zero-G?" Pitt asked from NASA headquarters in Washington."I got to tell you, it was really good," said Hague, six months into his own 6 ?-month mission. "The depictions, the settings all as you can tell look very similar to the type of setting I've got around me. I got to imagine it was a lot easier for me to kind of enjoy the zero-G than it was you," he added, flipping in weightlessness.Pitt noted the movie's spaceship was "a bit cleaner" than the station. After asking about spacewalking and seeing Earth from space, Pitt said, "Most important question: Who controls the jam box?" Answer: The astronauts take turns. With three Americans, two Russians and an Italian on board, the music has an "international flare," Hague said. The 20-minute chat ended with Pitt sharing, "I can't wait to brag to my kids."___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education. CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - They call themselves the "Cheekta-Vegas Griswolds." Year after year, Dan McPhee takes a week off work to put together an extravagant holiday display, filled with thousands of lights, Santas, and snowmen. It's all to bring a smile to those passing by - a smile that's needed more than ever in 2020."I mean I hope people enjoy it. I'm getting beeps from people who are driving by, beeping their horns showing support. It makes me feel good to see other people enjoying it as much as we do," McPhee said.Star 102.5 has aimed to bring some much needed Christmas spirit as well. For 20 years, the radio station has filled Western New York airwaves with holiday cheer."But this year we kind of thought we could go a little early in light of all the turmoil and things that were going on. Maybe we could just make someone's day," Sue O'Neil, the operations manager and on-air talent for Star 102.5, said.At 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1, Chris Kringle and Rudolf took over the airwaves. It's the earliest Star 102.5 has ever started playing Christmas songs."I think a distraction is needed because everybody is kind of waiting to pounce. Everybody is kind of at each other. We need to get back to letting people out in traffic and smiling and waving and helping people out in the store when they can't reach something and putting a smile on their faces and maybe this makes you happy and maybe it makes your day a little brighter," O'Neil said. While Star 102.5 is bringing Western New York holiday cheer to our ears, S and K Holiday Lighting is working to bring it to our eyes."It's kind of unusually busy. I think a lot more people are wanting to do things because of the crazy times that we're living in now," Bill Sahn, the owner of S and K Holiday Lighting, said.S and K Lighting are seeing double the amount of business than in years past. Sahn said strands of red and white are simply a way to lighten the mood."Of course it brightens everybody's day literally and emotionally. It just brings a smile to people's faces. They're Christmas lights. They're fun," Sahn said. This story was first reported by Olivia Proia at WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 2163
