The National Guard is attempting to rescue dozens of people who are currently trapped at a California resort as the Creek Fire continues to burn out of control in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.According to The Washington Post, about 50 hikers remain trapped at the Vermilion Valley Resort with all escape routes cut off by the fire. The hikers have been sheltering in place at the resort since Sunday night.Officials have been unable to send rescue helicopters to the area due to low visibility caused by smoke from the fire. The area has dealt with high winds and record heat in recent days, which is making things difficult for both rescuers and firefighters.However, Col. Jesse Miller of the National Guard said Tuesday that the weather was beginning to turn."Mother Nature is trying to help us out this morning with some of the smoke clearing, allowing visibility for the aircraft to pick up the landing zones and get in safely to our folks here in California," Miller said in an interview on Good Morning America on Tuesday.So far, the wildfire is confirmed to have killed one person from smoke inhalation, according to the Fresno Fire Battalion. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office reports a second person died from a medical episode when EMS could not respond due to the conditions.According to CALFIRE, the Creek Fire remains 0% contained as of Monday evening. The fire has been burning since Thursday but nearly doubled in size on Monday alone to cover nearly 80,000 acres.Col. Jesse Miller told ABC News Tuesday morning that the National Guard is also attempting to send rescue helicopters to Hidden Lakes. The Lockport City School District thinks it could soon be a national model for school security. Superintendent Michelle Bradley said the district is installing 300 new security cameras loaded with a new high tech software. The software recognizes people who pose a threat, like terminated employees, sex offenders, suspended students, or someone carrying a gun. Then, it alerts police or school leaders. “It will add another layer of security to what we already have,” Bradley said. It will be the first security system of its kind in any public school in the United States. It will be installed in all 10 buildings owned by Lockport School District. Tony Olivo with Corporate Screening & Investigative Group, LLC is working with Canadian owned SN Technologies to get th\e high-tech system into more buildings in western New York.“We’ve actually been looking to deplore this type of technology in hospitals, health care organizations, as well as places like malls,” Olivo said. The new system is just part of the changes Lockport Public Schools have made to security recently. The school also just installed new doors and a sign-in system, which cost close to million dollars.The projects are being funded by the Smart School Bond Act of 2014 — a referendum allowing the state to give schools money for safety following the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. More than 200 school across New York are on the waiting list for approval for funds from the act. The recognition system will be installed in Lockport schools over the summer. The old expression “just like riding a bike” doesn’t apply to everyone.After 12 years of driving his car, Gavin Burgo is getting back on a bicycle and he’s having a tough time picking up where he last left off.“Driving downtown is fairly dangerous,” he said. “Especially with Segways ruling the roads for a while."Helping Burgo relearn the rules of the road are neighborhood navigators from Bicycle Colorado, a nonprofit organization supporting the interests of bicycle riders worldwide.“We know that COVID has definitely impacted how people are getting around,” said James Waddell, mobility program director with Bicycle Colorado. Waddell’s team recently received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration, which is being used to help teach people how to ride bikes safely in downtown areas.“We’ll take you on a 10-minute city spin loop, teach you a few urban bike dance moves and get your bike confidence up,” he said.An increase in confidence as more people are now riding bikes and driving less across America.New numbers from the American Automobile Association show many major metropolitan areas saw traffic drop nearly 60% during the early parts of the pandemic.While many commuters are now shifting gears, with AAA shows traffic has rebounded to nearly 90% of pre-COVID numbers. However, there is a sentiment among many Latino voters that their vote won’t make a difference. Dora Ramirez, of El Paso, Texas, tells me she is sick and tired of issues facing the Latino community not being addressed by politicians. “We bring money into the economy, we work in the economy. People would not have strawberries or lettuce or avocados if people did not go out and work, and yet they are dismissing us as if we are nothing," said Ramirez.In an effort to engage voters, volunteers were out at a local food pantry. Every person driving up for food is asked if they are registered to vote and if they know where to drop off their ballot. Many have described the Latino vote as a “sleeping giant." A Pew Research study is showing the “sleeping giant” could come to life during this election showing there are 5.6 million registered Latino voters in Texas, 7.9 million in California, 3.1 million in Florida, 2 million in New York and more than a million in Arizona. O’Rourke says he has heard from many Latino voters that they don’t feel included by political parties and will not vote, but a group that he is seeing become quite active is the younger Latino community. “Those young people, I believe, are not only going to vote in record numbers, but they are getting their folks and their grandparents and the people in their lives to vote as well," said O’Rourke.Miranda Escobar Gregory is one of those young Latinos. At 20 years old, this will be her first time voting. “I know that I now have more of a voice than I did 2 years ago," said Escobar Gregory. Born and raised in El Paso, as a first-generation Mexican American she faces some unique challenges in adapting her own political believes and still respecting those of her conservative upbringing. “If we have a strong presence in this country, why are we not using our voice to represent us and letting other people do it for us," said Escobar Gregory.Escobar Gregory is one of the more than 3 million registered young Latino voters, a group many believe will show up in record numbers during this election. 2437
