Fifty- three years ago, Richard and Mildred Loving changed the nation by saying, "I do."The couple got married on June 2, 1958, in Washington D.C but when they returned to Caroline County, Virginia, they were arrested because their marriage wasn't legal.Richard was White and Mildred was Black and their marriage violated the Racial Integrity Act of 1924.Richard and Mildred were charged with unlawful cohabitation and given two options: either continue to serve jail time or leave Virginia for 25 years. The couple faced ostracism and threats, but they took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court to challenge the state's ban against interracial marriage. On June 12, 1967, that case – Loving v. Virginia – produced a landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down laws in 16 states prohibiting interracial marriage.Every year supporters celebrate Loving Day – a day to reflect on and celebrate multicultural unions.Their story was depicted in the 2016 movie “Loving” as well as the 2011 documentary “The Loving Story.”This story was first published by WTVR's Sarah Danial. 1090

First lady Melania Trump was released from the hospital Saturday morning, her office confirmed."The first lady returned home to the White House this morning. She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits," said Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director. "Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out."Trump has been recuperating at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since she underwent a kidney embolization procedure on Monday. Grisham said Monday that the first lady was expected to stay in the hospital for the duration of the week.Pressed for more information about the first lady's condition and why she stayed in the hospital five nights after what was possibly a routine kidney procedure, Grisham pushed back on reports speculating about Trump's health. 898

First the disaster, now the polemic. As hundreds of rescuers continued their search Wednesday for survivors of a bridge collapse in Italy that killed dozens of people the day before, questions were being asked about how such an accident could happen in a modern industrialized country, the eighth-biggest economy in the world.Fingers are being pointed and there are calls for heads to roll. And, as can be expected in Italy, political infighting is reaching a fever pitch.Photos: The Morandi Bridge collapse in Genoa, ItalyBuilt in the 1960s, the Morandi Bridge was a vital link of the A10 highway that connects northwest Italy to France, across the Polcevera river in central Genoa. It was one of the busiest bridges in the country, carrying freight and tourists to and from the port city. 797
