WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Citing the desire to achieve financial stability while maintaining competitiveness, the College of William & Mary will discontinue seven of its 23 varsity sports.At the conclusion of the 20-21 academic year, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming, men's indoor and outdoor track & field, and women's volleyball will no longer be sponsored as Division I sports at the Williamsburg institution.In an open letter, Director of Athletics Samantha K. Huge said, "This is a wrenching decision. It will impact 118 student-athletes and 13 coaches. Altered, too, will be the lives of thousands of family members, former varsity letter award winners, alumni, fans, donors, and supporters of these seven sports programs."Over the past two decades, W&M says there have been several athletics program reviews conducted by groups both within – and external – to athletics. Each of these reviews, according to W&M, reached the same conclusion: William & Mary's model of sponsoring 23 varsity sports is unsustainable without a significant increase in funding through private philanthropy and revenue generation. While many hair salon and gym owners across the country understood why they had to shut down during the pandemic, those closures created a financial hardship. A hardship that some are finding difficult to overcome."Economically, it's been devastating to us. We opened up our gym three years ago and sort of like a little miracle. We took over an existing gym that was probably not fitting the community. We came in there with our life savings, we opened up this beautiful gym and we were becoming very successful," said John Pena, the owner of GYM NYC in New York City.Pena says their business was shut down for nearly six months. Now, he's finally excited to reopen. Pena applied for and received money from the Paycheck Protection Program but it only did so much. "There is no income coming in from the business, obviously. The extra 0 on the unemployment has really been a big help but that’s going away. I’ve been able to pay my bills and that's it," said Pena. Pena and other gym owners in New York are hoping for more government help for small businesses to help them get back on their feet."In general, I think there is a set of overhead expenses that I’m sure owners in any industry would tell you play a huge factor. For Pena, he's concerned that not helping businesses reopen could have a devastating economic impact. With a mask covering his face and his fingers playing a disinfected piano, musician Purnell Steen and his band, Le Jazz Machine, are back to doing what they love: playing music in front of a live audience, but now from a regulated distance.“It is a new learning experience for all us,” Steen said.After being shut down for months due to coronavirus concerns, Steen is back on his home stage at Dazzle in downtown Denver, one of the top 100 jazz bars in the world.“For the entire month of June, we did as much as much revenue as we used to do on a good Saturday,” said Matt Ruff, Dazzle general manager.Ruff says new safety guidelines that allow live music venues like his to operate are impacting his bottom line.“Capacity went from 50 to 100 people,” he said. “But it’s still 6-foot distancing between tables and the closest table to the stage has to be 25 feet away from the stage.”Though he’s thankful to reopen, Ruff is also questioning some of those safety measures, like no longer allowing wind instruments to be played on stage.“I think that’s based on faulty information,” he said.
