OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Since 1975, the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association has been serving hot meals to North County seniors in need. Due to financial hardships, that will end after Dec. 28."Our program has skyrocketed, we have a lot of seniors that are below poverty level, they have no family, they have no finances," Executive Director Sylvia Spears said. "Our meal is sometimes the only meal they get for the day and we ask for a donation only, we never turn anybody down if they can’t make a donation."Spears says the program is funded by senior donations, the county, and grants. However, she says senior donations have dropped 75 percent and they now have more clients than ever. Spears says the nonprofit asked the City of Oceanside for help, requesting an additional ,000 a month. The city could only offer half of that."I had to realize that we just couldn’t go on anymore and that’s hard because I know what these meals mean to these seniors," said Spears. Despite the nonprofit shutting down, the city says it’s committed to ensuring there’s no gap in services."Those who’ve been participating in the nutrition program will continue to have access to that here at the Senior Center as well as within their homes if they choose to do so," said Mark Olson, Parks and Recreation Division manager for Oceanside.Olson says they are working closely with the county to bring in another meal provider. 1423

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside is taking control of its water destiny, investing in a facility to purify recycled water from homes.“It’s not being used, it’s really a waste. A lot of that water is going out to the ocean and it’s really a precious resource," said Cari Dale, Water Utilities Director for the city. This Fall they'll break ground on the Pure Water Oceanside facility, which will sit right next to the San Luis Rey Water Reclamation Facility.The process uses state-of-the-art water purification steps that replicate and accelerate nature's natural recycling process. The facility will create between 3 and 5 million gallons per day of high-quality drinking water for the Oceanside community.Currently, the city gets most of its water from outside sources, which is costly and subject to drought and environmental disasters.Pure Water Oceanside will be able to provide 30 percent of the city's water supply.“It’s important because it’s controlling our own destiny, we’re really reusing something that would otherwise would be thrown away, so really it’s being a good environmental steward," said Dale.Orange County has been using a similar system for years.Funding for the million project will come from the city, as well as federal and state grants. Dale says residents will also see small increases in their bills.They hope to have the new facility running by the end of 2021. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A U.S. Marine Corps truck caught fire on northbound Interstate 5 in Oceanside Friday afternoon, backing up traffic on the busy freeway. Witnesses reported the military vehicle on fire with small explosions about 1 p.m., according to Oceanside Fire Division Chief Pete Lawrence. Two Marines were in the truck when “they heard a loud bang and immediately saw smoke and fire in the rear of the cab,” Lawrence said. The troops escaped without injury.
