SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in the attic of a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday displaced seven residents, but nobody was hurt.The blaze was reported shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the two-story house in the 8400 block of Corte Fragata, off Carmel Mountain Road north of state Route 56, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.One person in the home told dispatchers the residents smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the attic, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes and kept the flames contained to the attic area, but the house sustained smoke damage, she said.The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- four adults and three children -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 821

As does the small Lake County town of Cobb, much of which was destroyed by the Valley Fire in 2015."There's a lot of Paradises out there," said Max Moritz, a fire specialist at UC Santa Barbara.RELATED: Wet winters no longer reduce wildfire risk in California, report claimsAll told, more than 2.7 million Californians live in very high fire hazard severity zones, from trailers off quiet dirt roads in the forest to mansions in the state's largest cities, according to the analysis, which is based on 2010 block-level census data. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says its maps show places where wildfires are likely to be extreme due to factors including vegetation and topography.The maps aren't perfect in their ability to forecast where a fire will be destructive. For instance, the Coffey Park neighborhood of Santa Rosa isn't in a very high hazard zone, but powerful winds pushed the Tubbs Fire into that part of the city, largely leveling the neighborhood in October 2017.Coffey Park was built "with zero consideration for fire," said Chris Dicus, a forestry and fire expert at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In the meantime, experts say the current maps, created about a decade ago, still provide an important guide to predict where wildfires could do the most damage, in the same way floodplain maps highlight areas that could be hit hardest during severe storms.The at-risk communities identified by McClatchy also should serve as a starting point for prioritizing how California should spend money on retrofits and other fire-safety programs, Moritz said.California's state-of-the-art building codes help protect homes from wildfire in the most vulnerable areas, experts say. But the codes only apply to new construction. A bill introduced by Assemblyman Jim Wood would provide cash to help Californians retrofit older homes."This will go a long way toward these different municipalities (in showing) that they deserve funding," Moritz said.McClatchy identified more than 75 towns and cities with populations over 1,000 where, like Paradise, at least 90 percent of residents live within the Cal Fire "very high fire hazard severity zones." 3555

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The U.S. Marine Corps says two Marines were shot during a live-fire training exercise at a Southern California base involving hundreds of troops.The military says both were airlifted Sunday from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at the Twentynine Palms base east of San Diego to an unnamed California hospital.2nd Lt. Samuel Banks says one Marine was later released and the other remains hospitalized in serious condition.He says the Marines are stationed at Twentynine Palms. SAN DIEGO — The County Office of Education is taking its annual job fair entirely online, with already more than 800 registered job seekers. The job fair, which is regularly held at Liberty Station, will instead feature virtual lobbies and virtual tables. Dr. Sheiveh Jones, who organized the fair for the office of education, said more than 25 school districts and charter schools are participating. She said there may not be as many openings as in prior years because of temporary budget uncertainty, but that could change by the end of the summer. "When a position does open, the district may invite you to apply or they may just recognize your name when they look at the applications," she said. Jones said the districts are hiring for both academic and non-academic positions. She added there is always demand for bilingual, special education, STEM and substitute teachers. She said her best advice is to check out the posted jobs online ahead of time at Edjoin, so jobseekers can be better prepared to meet hiring managers, or even apply before the fair. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 1,115-acre vegetation fire at the Camp Pendleton Marine Base was extinguished today, base officials said.The Camp Pendleton Fire Department put out the fire at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday after battling the blaze overnight.The fire began Saturday and was first reported after 5 p.m. to have charred 220 acres, sending smoke over North County.The fire burned in the X-ray impact area, which is used for artillery and mortar training. 455
