SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — An Arizona legislative candidate is saddened and embarrassed after one of his political signs was vandalized with anti-Semitic markings.Seth Blattman, who is Jewish, is running as a Democrat to represent Legislative District 23 in the Arizona State Senate. On Friday, he posted a picture on Twitter showing a campaign sign of his that had been vandalized with a swastika and the word "killer.""I have a great aunt who survived the Holocaust. She was a kid. I also had family who died in the Holocaust," Blattman said. "For Jewish people, it's a little special. It means hate, but directed at you. It's the worst thing you could show or say to a Jewish person."Blattman reported the markings to Scottsdale police, who asked him to leave the sign up so police could conduct their investigation. He plans to take it down as soon as possible."It's sad to see, and it doesn't make you feel safe either," Blattman said. "It's embarrassing, you know, and it's such a terrible symbol I didn't want it out there. I wanted to cover it up.""Even after doing this for 13 years, I'm still shocked when I see something like this," said Tammy Gillies, Interim Director at the Anti-Defamation League in Arizona. "We would like to see a lot more civil discourse. We can certainly disagree on the issues. Nobody has to agree, and that's why there's so many candidates in different areas. We need to lead by example."Blattman's Republican opponent, Michelle Ugenti-Rita, did not respond to questions about whether she condemned the anti-Semitic vandalism to Blattman's sign. SAN MARCOS (KGTV) - A report of a man shooting his wife at their North San Diego County home Tuesday may have been a swatting call, San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies said.Deputies got a call indicating a man had opened fire on his wife at a home in the 1400 block of Clearview Way near San Elijo Park in San Marcos about 2:30 p.m.Investigators surrounded the home, breaking down the door with guns drawn. They found the man unarmed on the balcony. No victim was in the home. Several schools were temporarily placed on lockdown. The man’s wife later arrived at the scene, unaware of the situation. The woman, who did not want to be identified,  told 10News she and her husband are gamers with millions of followers. "People always have an opinion and they may not like what you do or say and sometimes it’s taken to an extreme when they call the cops on you," said the man's wife. The wife said her husband had no idea deputies had entered the home until he heard shouting. He usually wears a headset while he's playing. "He heard 'this is the police'. I think he heard it, 'this is the police' and he took his headset off and he came downstairs and he saw guns being pointed at him and he wanted to show his hands because he was afraid to get shot," she said. The call made to deputies was traced back to a doctor’s office in Michigan, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies confirmed the call was a hoax.Swatting is the practice of making a hoax call about a crime to draw law enforcement officers to a specific location.The San Marcos man said he had been playing an online game when the incident happened.This story has been updated from the initial Sheriff's Department report that a woman had been shot at the home. 1801

(CNS) -- A brush fire that may have been sparked by illegal fireworks on Sunday afternoon has scorched about 1,200 acres near the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway in Santa Clarita and is about 30% contained Monday morning, authorities said.About 400 firefighters and three helicopters remained on duty overnight working to put out flames and clear lines of vegetation to contain them, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Sky Cornell said.As of 9 a.m., the fire was listed at 1,300 acres and 30% containment. No injuries were reported and no homes were damaged, authorities said, but an assessment released after daybreak indicated that nearly 4,800 structures were threatened.At one point on Sunday, flames threatened nine homes in rural Agua Dulce Canyon which were ordered evacuated, and 200-250 people were advised to prepare to leave their homes if conditions worsened, according to county Fire Chief Deputy David Richardson.Evacuees were told to take small animals and report to the Victory Outreach parking lot at 37419 25th Street East in Palmdale but to stay in their cars due to COVID-19.The fast-moving Soledad Fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, pushed by winds of 20-30 mph, Richardson said.The flames skirted the 14 Freeway, burning near Soledad Canyon and Agua Dulce Canyon Roads and jumped over the freeway in a couple of places only to have those spots put out quickly by firefighters, he said.Initially, the northbound 14 was closed at Agua Dulce Canyon and southbound lanes were shut down at Soledad Canyon, the California Highway Patrol reported. SEATTLE (AP) — Cookware and kitchen chain Sur La Table is closing 56 of its 121 stores as it seeks bankruptcy protection, the latest retail casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. The privately-held Seattle-based company says it has agreed to sell its remaining stores to affiliates of Fortress Investment Group following the bankruptcy procedure and store closures. “This sale process will result in a revitalized Sur La Table, positioned to thrive in a post-COVID-19 retail environment," CEO Jason Goldberger said in the press release. "Sur La Table will have a balance sheet and retail footprint optimized to position the Company for a bright future that continues our nearly 50-year tradition of offering high-quality cooking products and experiences to our customers.”The post-sale company will also include its in-person and online cooking classes and its e-commerce business. Sur La's chefs typically teach 60,000 cooking classes a year to more than 700,000 people, the company said.Sur La Table had its start in Seattle's Pike Place Market in 1972. 1062
