SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The magic of the holiday classic "The Nutcracker" couldn't be stopped, even by a pandemic, as the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet has figured out a way for the show to go on.We're used to seeing this ballet with its lavish sets on an indoor stage with dancers close together, but this season things will look different because the virtual show will be outside with dancers wearing masks and distancing.Lucia del Rio stars as Clara and says, "I'm just really excited to be doing it at all. It's like in the beginning it was kind of hard to see how it was going to work especially since we were on Zoom. The most exciting part for me is being around everyone even if we have our masks on."The 9th grader from Academy of Our Lady of Peace says while they have had two in-person rehearsals following safety precautions, most rehearsals have been from home alone via Zoom."It's just very tough.. My floor is not good, my floor is very slippery." San Diego Civic Youth Ballet Artistic Director Danika Pramik-Holdaway has been on the other end of those Zoom rehearsals and says they've all had to overcome a few obstacles."Knowing who they stand next to, who they go behind, how they go in their direct order, when you're on Zoom at home by yourself that's very very challenging," says Pramik-Holdaway.But the students were up to the task and with hard work, Lucia and the other dancers have been able to turn lonely Zoom rehearsals into something special. The small group performance outside the Casa del Prado Theater will be recorded so people can watch online. It will be a simplified, shorter version of The Nutcracker, but the beloved scenes will still be there. Lucia says, "It's really really special. It's kind of a gift to be able to dance with people in the holiday season, so I'm really excited about that."Not to mention a virtual trip to see the Sugar Plum Fairy could yield a sweet reward --- more viewers than usual. Pramik-Holdaway says, "I'm sure we'll have definitely a lot of grandparents, who don't live here in San Diego, get to see their grandkids dance."They both agree that holding onto cherished traditions like this one, even if they have to be adapted, is something we need right now."Since we're in Balboa Park we have people walking through the park and everyone stops by and says, 'Oh, the Nutcracker!' They hear the music and I think it makes everyone feel like things are going to be okay again," says Pramik-Holdaway.SDCYB is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and ticket sales help keep this nonprofit going. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten years ago this week, the stock market hit bottom. The country was in a crisis and the glory days of flipping houses in San Diego were a thing of the past. There are still people fixing and flipping houses, but if you want to make it in San Diego, you have to be a smart and savvy investor.“I continued the large pieces of tile all the way over, and I used as much glass as I could to open it up,” says Elijah Zuniga showing off the remodel of his master bathroom.Zuniga is not your average "flipper."“I’m just like the TV shows, except I don’t have a sidekick,” Zuniga says with a laugh.RELATED: San Diego among top hot housing markets for 2019, Zillow reportsA retired police officer and now a consultant, Zuniga buys about four homes a year. Not to live in, but rather as investments. He calls it his passion. And, he has a vision. Zuniga can walk into any home and see its potential. “You have to imagine the finished product in order to work through it,” adds Zuniga.Take the home he purchased in late November for example. It’s a 1974 single family home in San Carlos. The before and after photos are striking. Same with the bathrooms. Zuniga says the key is never cutting corners in the remodel. If you want to flip instead of flop, the investor must impress the buyer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FBI is investigating following a hazmat situation in La Jolla Thursday afternoon. According to authorities, the incident started around 1 p.m. on the 9400 block of La Jolla Farms Road near UCSD and the Scripps Reserve trail. Throughout the afternoon, people who appeared to be workers at the home could be seen sitting outside with bags wrapped around their lower legs. The unidentified substance is being cleaned up by hazmat crews and, at this time, it's unclear what led to the situation. Neighbors say the home was being rented out and a new tenant recently moved in.The Department of Environmental Health said they found a contaminant and that it is contained with no threat to the community.The final Hazmat crews left around 7:30 p.m. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Class of 2019 is graduating to a significantly tougher rental market than graduates from ten years ago. Rent hikes and slow income growth are making it more difficult for new grads to afford rental homes, according to a HotPads report. A typical college graduate in the U.S. spends 45.3 percent of his or her income on the median rent of ,740, up from 40.5 percent for the Class of 2009. The rent burden has grown by 22 percent as early-career median incomes have dropped 14.5 percent, HotPads analysts say. In San Diego, the median rent is more than the entire income for new graduates with degrees including biology and business management, at ,000 per year, and nearly the entire income for those with degrees in psychology, at roughly ,000 per year, HotPads reports. The top-earning degrees nationwide were primarily in engineering fields, with mining and mineral engineers earning a median ,854 after college. “As rent prices and student debts rise, affordability concerns for recent college graduates have garnered attention on the national stage,” said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. “Graduating from college still typically pays off in the long run, but slower wage growth for college graduates and rising costs have dampened the immediate financial benefits associated with a four-year degree. As renters consider their career interests and their short-term costs of living, where and how they live post-graduation can have more of an impact on their finances now than ever before."
