TONGHUA, Jilin, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to save 18 miners trapped in a coal mine that flooded due to a deluge that hit the area in northeast China's Jilin Province shortly after midnight Tuesday.More than 2,000 rescuers are pumping water out of the mine through an auxiliary shaft after the entrance of the main shaft collapsed amid rain-triggered floods.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has instructed the local government and other related departments to spare no effort in saving the miners' lives. The accident happened at 12:10 a.m. at Hongyuan Coal Mine in the Erdaojiang District of Tonghua, the third largest city in Jilin, said Zhang Dejun, a spokesman for the city government. He said the miners were working below ground to pull out machinery that had been soaked after days of torrential rain, when the flooding occurred. The mine was near the lower reaches of Daluoquangou River, which is swollen after the catchment received 116.2 millimeters of rain Monday."Time is very pressing," Zhang said.Wang Rulin, governor of Jilin Province, arrived at the scene at noon Tuesday to oversee the rescue. Wang visited the families of the trapped miners to hear rescuers' and experts' reports. The Hongyuan Coal Mine has an annual production capacity of 60,000 tonnes and is a township-owned mine. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.Jilin Province has been battered by heavy rain and floods this summer. At least 85 people have died and 66 are missing after floods over the past two months, according to the provincial government.
ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,156 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 588 still missing, local authorities said. The toll stood at 1,144 by Thursday afternoon.More than 1,500 survivors are living in tents or school classrooms while 8,300 have sought shelter with relatives and friends, said Zhao Minxue, head of the publicity department in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.Water and power supplies, and telecommunication services in Zhouqu are gradually back to normal thanks to swift repair efforts.Power has been resumed in the key regions of the county seat and at 60 percent of households, the provincial information office said in a statement Friday.Relief teams are digging new wells after finding two new drinking water sources and 21 unpolluted wells, it said.Gansu had received 120.4 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) in cash donations and relief materials by Friday afternoon, the provincial department of civil affairs said.Meanwhile, relief workers continued to clear the water course of the Bailong River, which overflowed after being blocked by debris, amid fears that more downpours could trigger new floods and mudslides.Rescuers tried to give dignity to the deceased as they were striving to search bodies in the debris. But this was no easy work sometimes as many bodies were buried meters deep in sludge."All the soldiers have done their best," said survivor Bai Chengxiang, 24. "If they could not find the remains of my aunt's family, I will have to accept the reality."
BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Wednesday with Singapore President S.R. Nathan. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) - China's banking regulator on late Thursday said the hypothetical situations in the risk tests of banks, such as a possible slump in property prices, does neither indicate the regulator's judgment on the property market nor possible changes in government property policies. The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) reaffirmed in an online statement that it allows banks in regions with soaring property prices to suspend loans for third homes according to their assessment on credit risks. The CBRC also said the down payment and the lending rate for third homes mortgage loans should be raised, but the specific amount should be determined by banks. The declaration was made in response to domestic reports that the CBRC had ordered banks in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou to stop issuing loans to third home buyers.According to Bloomberg's Thursday report, the banking regulator had told lenders to include worst-case scenarios of prices dropping 50 to 60 per cent in cities where they have risen excessively, which signaled that the government might be growing more concerned about the health of the real estate market.
