SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The message from nurses and caregivers Tuesday morning was clear, "it's a question of priorities for entire healthcare system." Frustration and anger built after a 27-month contract renewal was signed by Palomar Health's CEO, Diane Hansen. The contract details a base salary close to million, with potential of earning bonuses, increasing that amount. Frontline workers argue that because COVID-19 led to an increase of patients, and layoffs of caregivers and nurses, "the board should have invested in resources and more protective equipment. Some of the PPE is not even medical grade, and everyone who's been laid off should be brought back," said representative for California's nurses association, Sarah Gurling. Gurling joined other reps and nurses in a protest at Palomar Medical Center, arguing funds should have been allocated towards other resources within their facilities."Caregivers and nurses are the heart of the hospital. We know what's best for patients and each other. The hospital executives and the Palomar board has lost sight of that." Meahwhile, Palomar's health board chair, Richard Engel, stands behind his decision. He said Hansen has done a tremendous job and credits much of the hospital's success through her work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host drive-in live concerts and a movie series this month.The concerts and movie screenings will be held at the former Nordstrom parking lot at Westfield North County at 8 p.m. Spaces for more than 250 vehicles will be made available and spaced apart to keep listeners distanced.The scheduled shows start on Aug. 14 with a showing of the classic musical Grease and continue on Aug. 15 and 16 with a performance by Jersey Boys stars Christian Hoff and Travis Cloer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The growing concerns over the coronavirus are impacting the daily routines of people across San Diego. Some businesses are changing the way they do things. CorePower Yoga has dozens of studios across San Diego. Monday morning, the company sent an email to its staff and clients outlining several precautions. Chloe Delehanti works out at the Mission Valley location."I've lived through SARS and Swine Flu, and I don't remember it being this serious of a concern, certainly never getting emails from my gym, or travel alerts, so it's definitely concerning," said Delehanti. The email stated the company is increasing its cleaning protocols and reducing the use of props and physical contact between teachers and clients. "Obviously, I really like adjustments and having that component in class, but I think it's a good idea to be as safe as possible, considering that it is a really growing concern, and there's a lot of new cases," said Delehanti.A salon in Hillcrest is also changing the way it does business. Stylists at Brightside Barber will now have the option of turning away customers who appear sick. "From here on out, not to feel like you can't turn someone away, if they are visibly sick with a fever, coughing," said Angelic Corona. She's been in the business ten years and said she's never seen anything like this. "I was relieved, cause you know, in customer service, it's kind of always been the customer is always right, but in this scenario it's health and safety for everyone," said Corona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The invisible wounds of war are a heavy burden to carry, long after deployment. Tom Voss, an Army veteran who served in a scout-sniper platoon, knows this feeling well. "I took shrapnel to the head from a rocket-propelled grenade. And then I also had a lot of survivors guilt around the death of my platoon sergeant because that day I was given the day off," said Voss.He says while deployed, there's no time to process these war injuries. "You have a lot of these questions come up, years and years later. A lot of veterans struggle with, could I have done more, can I be forgiven? A lot of these moral questions," said Voss.After serving, he wanted to bury the traumas of war; in the beginning, he was incapable of dealing with the stresses caused by combat experience. "I was using alcohol and then on top of it abusing the medications that were given to me to kind of numb myself to the experiences, because I didn't know how to process them or move through them or move on from them on my own," said Voss. "I had a lot of suicidal ideations, so that's getting to the point of like, how am I going to take my own life?"Voss decided he needed to make a drastic change. He and a fellow veteran walked 2,700 miles across the country, from Wisconsin to California. It was on that trek where he began to heal and learned about holistic approaches to deal with trauma, like meditation and yoga. Voss now travels the world, teaching veterans and their families these techniques. "It's really up to us as veterans to educate the community about the experiences of what it's really like in combat and how it impacts veterans coming home, how it impacts communities, coming home. And most importantly, how it impacts families," said Voss.
