As we inch toward another national election, it may seem that bridging social, economic and political division is insurmountable. But one artist has spent years bringing people together with a message of reconciliation.Rich Alapack is the founder of “We All Live Here”, a project that aims to build unity through community partnerships and public art installations.For the last five years, he’s been spreading his message of positivity and inclusiveness through interactive murals.He’s brought together students, educators and businesses to spread the message that “we all live here.”“Income equality, gender equality, racial equality, sexual equality, the environment, all fall under the umbrella of these four really simple words,” explained Alapack.When he first began his work, he was surprised at how much the phrase resonated.“I started getting messages from people all over the world encouraging me to keep spreading this message,” he said.He created a program for schools called ACT, which stands for art, community and technology. So far, he’s worked with 110 different schools and shared the message of positive inclusiveness with almost 40,000 kids.“With this division that's happening in our society these days, you can't tell someone that they're wrong and expect them to change their mind,” said Alapack. “So, this phrase ‘we all live here’ as a phrase to respond when they hear something hateful.”Seven thousand colorful magnetic panels outside one school mural he installed will eventually have messages scribbled on the underside by eighth-graders.“Believe in yourself, and you can do it,” read Alapack from one panel.A two-year study released this past summer by Beyond Conflict, tapped brain and behavioral scientists to look at toxic polarization in the U.S. What they found suggests that the divide is more a function of perception than reality.It’s something Alapack believes we can change.“It's indisputable. We do all live here, and so, from there you can find other common grounds and repair maybe some of this divide,” he said.And whether through chalk, paint or magnetic panels, Alapack says he hopes creativity and engagement will inspire others to look beyond differences to find understanding.“Creativity is this unique superpower that humans have, and if you can get someone to do something that they don't think they can, then all of a sudden that opens their horizons to what other things they might be able to do that they don’t think they can do.” 2490

At the Denny’s along US 1 in Port St. Lucie, is one customer everyone knows.Not a lot of people turn 100, and not a lot of people eat at the same place day after day, for decades.Sister Marie Alice Lagace was greeted with a rendition of Happy Birthday on the trumpet Tuesday.“She always has a kind word and a gentle way of always making you feel good," said Denny's General Manager Maurice Warrington.Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec offered a proclamation and a funny gift — a ruler with the city logo.But the biggest honor would be fixed to her usual booth in back, a booth now renamed for her.“I just love it and I find the beauty in all of these people," Lagace said.Parishioners from Holy Family Catholic Church take turns driving her here, and they can’t take her anywhere else.“Some of them ask me, 'We’re going to eat somewhere,  you coming with us?' Nope. I’m coming here," Lagace said.She orders the same thing every day: one egg, a piece of toast, grape jelly and coffee — although Tuesday, cake was the substitute. Parishioners who ask her the secret to a healthy, long, life get a simple answer.“Love God, smile, relax," said Aleen Stanton with Holy Family. Sister Marie Alice has been on mission trips around the globe. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The chairman of a panel considering changes to the U.S. military draft said Monday its recommendations to Congress won't be influenced by a federal judge's recent ruling that the current system is unconstitutional because it only applies to men.The military has not drafted anyone into service in more than 40 years, but American men must still register when they turn 18. Recent efforts to make registration also mandatory for women have set off intense debate in Washington.U.S. District Judge Gray Miller declared a male-only draft unconstitutional in his ruling late Friday, but he stopped of ordering the government to make any immediate changes. He said the time for debating "the place of women in the Armed Forces" is over. Women now make up 20 percent of the Air Force, 19 percent of the Navy, 15 percent of the Army and 8.6 percent of the Marines, according to Pentagon figures.The Justice Department declined comment Monday after losing the case out of Houston.RELATED: Federal judge rules male-only draft is unconstitutionalThe decision comes as Congress awaits a report next year from an 11-member commission to study the issue of selective service. It is chaired by former Nevada Rep. He described a generational divide in public comments his commission has collected about women and the draft."If you talk to those who would be impacted, that is males and females ages 18 to 25, they say, 'yes, women should have to register. ATLANTA, Ga. – The U.S. Marshals Service says it found 39 missing children in Georgia this month during an investigation called “Operation Not Forgotten.”The two-week operation in Atlanta and Macon resulted in the rescue of 26 children, the safe location of 13 kids and the arrest of nine “criminal associates,” the USMS announced Thursday.Additionally, investigators say they cleared 26 arrest warrants and filed additional charges for alleged crimes related to sex trafficking, parental kidnapping, registered sex offender violations, drugs and weapons possession, and custodial interference.The USMS says the missing children were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions.Since its partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the USMS says it has recovered more than 1,800 missing children.“When we track down fugitives, it’s a good feeling to know that we're putting the bad guy behind bars. But that sense of accomplishment is nothing compared to finding a missing child," said Darby Kirby, Chief of the Missing Child Unit. “It's hard to put into words what we feel when we rescue a missing child, but I can tell you that this operation has impacted every single one of us out here.
