US President Donald Trump says China has agreed to cut tariffs on cars it imports from the United States.Trump made the announcement in a tweet late Sunday in the United States, saying Beijing will "reduce and remove" the tariffs, which currently stand at 40%. He didn't specify when the change would happen or what the new tariff level would be.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang declined to comment Monday on Trump's statement, referring questions to "the relevant authorities." The Chinese Commerce Ministry, which typically makes announcements regarding tariffs, didn't respond to a faxed request for comment.Trump's tweet comes after he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on Saturday to hold off on further tariffs in the trade war between the two countries for the time being. But the Chinese government has made no mention of cutting car tariffs as a result of the meeting between the two leaders in Buenos Aires.Xi announced in a speech in April that China would cut tariffs on imported cars this year. His government followed through on that promise three months later, reducing them from 25% to 15%.But just days later, it imposed new additional tariffs of 25% on American-made passenger vehicles, one of the groups of products it targeted early in the trade warwith the United States.The move has hurt the profits of major automakers like BMW (BMWYY) and Daimler (DDAIF), the owner of Mercedes-Benz. The German companies both ship SUVs to China from manufacturing plants in the United States.Shares in BMW jumped more than 6% on Monday morning in Frankfurt following Trump's tweet, while Daimler's stock leaped more than 5%.Tu Le, the head of research firm Sino Auto Insights, highlighted the lack of specifics in Trump's tweet. 1804

Tyson Foods may lay off more than 400 workers in the South Bay in an effort to become more efficient and save money.It would be the biggest layoff in San Diego County in more than a year.The company filed a layoff notice with the state this month saying it had to let 401 workers go from its Circle Foods label plant in Otay Mesa. "Tyson Foods, Inc. regrets that its team members at the San Diego, California facility must be permanently displaced yet hopes to accomplish this plant closing with the least possible disruption of lives of the tema members, their families, and the community," the notice says.Many of the workers make Mexican frozen food on the factory's assemblyline.A team from the San Diego Workforce Partnership has already been to the factory twice to help the workers find new opportunities. Also, Windsor Foods is buying Tyson's plant to expand its Mexican frozen food offerings. While it does plan to eliminate three tortilla lines, company VIce President Paul Taylor said the Windsor hopes to keep as many of the workers as possible.Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said he doesn't see the layoffs as a larger trend. After all, the unemployment rate is now near a 17-year-low of 3.3 percent. The layoffs are expected to occur by the end of April. Tyson in a statement said it is working on a transition plan with Windsor Foods, but will retain some operations here. TUCSON, ARIZ. — A U.S. Deputy Marshal died in the line of duty on Thursday in a shooting with a suspect.The Marshal was serving an active felony warrant around 5:30 p.m. for 26-year-old Ryan Schlesinger for stalking law enforcement when the marshal was shot on scene.The Tucson Police Department confirmed that the fallen marshal was not alone at the scene and was with other officers.After the shooting occurred, police officers responded by sending units to the scene and surrounding the house.Schlesinger surrendered to police and per the Tucson Police Department, was not injured and brought into custody without incident.The Marshal was rushed with the hospital but died from injuries.The Tucson Police Department is not releasing the name of the fallen marshal at this time, but U.S. Marshal David Gonzales, who serves the district of Arizona, is at the hospital with personnel.The department is working with federal agencies to investigate the situation and is offering their deep condolences to the marshal's family. 1032

Two childcare workers have turned themselves into Florida police custody after a video surfaced of them berating, taunting and throwing a backpack at an 8-year-old child with autism.On Sept. 1, Winter Haven PD found out about a Snapchat video showing 26-year-old Kaderrica Smith and then 19-year-old Alexis Henderson taunting, aggravating, yelling at and tripping a student at Our Children's Academy.The 8-year-old is seen and heard in the video crying and hiding underneath a table while Henderson and Smith continue to taunt him.At one point the child tries to run towards one of the workers when she grabs his arms and sweeps his legs out from under him causing him to fall.The video lasts about three minutes and at one point shows one of the workers throwing a backpack at the child, hitting him in the face."There has to be an accountability measure for folks," said Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird. "Especially when they're supposed to be the professionals. They get hired as the professionals, they're being paid as the professionals."In initial interviews, the two said they felt they were acting appropriately and did nothing wrong. Henderson and Smith just received their certification for childcare last month. "Those aren't methods that you can even begin to defend as being used to defuse a situation with an autistic child," said Bird. They were each immediately fired by the faculty and DCF placed a hold on their certifications.The child was interviewed by a DCF Child Protection Team member on Sept. 15 and it was determined the acts were criminal.Police were initially unable to locate the two, thus giving reason to issue a warrant.  1713

Veterinarians are seeing an alarming increase in the number of cases of the canine parvovirus.Nationally, Blue Pearl pet hospitals report a 70 percent increase of the virus compared to statistics collected the previous five years.While an exact reason for the spike has yet to be determined, veterinarians suspect the coronavirus pandemic can shoulder some of the blame.“If people are staying home and have strict stay at home orders, probably vet visits aren’t the first thing on their minds,” said Dr. Lenore Bacek with Blue Pearl. “Financially, some people took a large hit to their normal finances during this time and routine vaccines weren’t a priority.”She added that people may be taking their newly adopted puppies to dog parks before they are fully vaccinated.Parvovirus is highly contagious because it can live on surfaces like grass or blankets for months and years.“Just assume it’s in the environment and don’t take your puppy somewhere other dogs have been,” Dr. Bacek said.Symptoms of the virus include vomiting and diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weakness and weight loss.Dogs can’t pass the virus to humans. However, the increase of parvovirus cases could mean other important vaccines are being neglected.“We worry if they are not getting parvo vaccines, are we missing things like rabies vaccines, which could have a public health implication?” Dr. Bacek said.Puppies are most at risk, but the virus can also impact adult dogs. Veterinarians recommend adults receive a booster vaccine every three years.If a dog falls ill, they can face expensive treatment.“With aggressive treatment, hospitalization, IV fluid therapy, supportive care, the survival rate is high, close to 90 percent,” Dr. Bacek said.However, the financial and emotional toll of a dog getting sick can be avoided with proper vaccines.“We want to make sure as the first wave continues and second waves comes, that vets are seen as an important factor in public health,” Dr. Bacek said.KSTU's John Franchi was first to report this story. 2051
