SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Elected officials, community activists, and law enforcement came together Monday to launch a new "Peace Movement" with the ambitious goal of ending violence in San Diego. Organized by District 4 City Councilmember Monica Montgomery, the goal is to find solutions to address the underlying root causes of violence and build trust between police and the communities they protect."It doesn't happen overnight," Montgomery told 10News. "It's continued understanding. It's getting in places where we're uncomfortable. It's listening to things that maybe we don't agree with all the time. Those are the things that will help us understand each other."San Diego Police Department chief David Nisleit said he's on board with the effort, specifically calling on people in communities beset by crime to come forward when they have information that could help investigators bring perpetrators to justice. Some community members are reticent to contact police. "We'll get there. There's no doubt in my mind we'll get there," Nisleit told 10News. "I'm going to focus on this as a positive step. We'll build those community partnerships. We'll work together. We're already doing that, we're just going to do it on a larger scale."Another speaker at Monday's press conference launching the initiative was Bishop Cornelius Bowser. As a former gang member himself, Bowser has tried to take a leadership goal in bridging the divide between residents and law enforcement. "I'm willing to lead the way and take those risks," Bower said. "But the struggle with me is when I try to do that, I need law enforcement to understand this and get my back. I need the community to understand this and get my back."Bowser says building relationships with both sides means walking a fine line, as the very appearance of a strong relationship with either side could encourage distrust from the other. He says the important thing is having the right people at the table having real conversations. He also believes developing trust will be a slow process. "You have to get one person at a time. You're not going to be able to go into a meeting and change 100 people in a meeting."One part of the new "Peace Movement" initiative is getting rid of gang graffiti. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. "Businesses aren't light switches; you can't turn us on and off."Uridel was cited back in May for refusing to shut down during the initial orders from the state. He has since hired a lawyer. 2614

San Diego (KGTV)- Small businesses around the county continue to navigate their way through the pandemic. A local Guamanian grill is using a musical twist to highlight their food, to bring in business.SMACK'N Guamanian Grill offers authentic Chamorro food. Chamorro is the native culture of the Mariana Islands region, including Guam.“All the recipes are authentic and passed down through generations,” says owner Christian Graham.The 24-year-old owner says opening the restaurant was a way to showcase his culture, which is not highly represented in San Diego.“I wanted to highlight what my grandmother, what my family has brought to the Chamorro food, the Chamorro community,” says Graham.When the pandemic hit, the newly opened SMACK'N Guamanian Grill had just opened six months prior.“Sales have dropped quite a bit between 30 to 50 percent,” says Graham. “We ended up losing about 20 percent of our staff members due to the pandemic because of their reduced hours.”As a young owner, Graham decided he needed a new, creative way to bring in business. He created a music video for the Guamanian Grill.“Just something different that restaurants haven’t done in the past.”The video, which launched a little over a week ago, already has hundreds of views on YouTube. Graham says business has increased by nearly 30 percent.He encourages other businesses to think outside of the box to develop ideas that will keep customers talking. Or, in his case, “rapping.” 1468

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)— Many residents in San Diego County woke up to a big mess after yesterday’s storms brought in the steady rain. Many people witnessed an early morning recovery mission in San Diego Bay Sunday. A 30-foot boat was found partially underwater at La Playa Cove near Shelter Island. San Diego Harbor Police believed no one was inside. But, a friend of the boat owner thought last night’s weather and rough waters might be the reasons it sank.“They may have come in last night during the storm and coming in, the boat sank on them,” friend of the boat owner, Jeff Gough said. Meanwhile, in North County, a large pine tree toppled down onto Eldorado Drive in Escondido.“There was room for like one car width for people to go around it,” homeowner Richard Bensinger said. Bensinger remembered when he planted what was a tiny Christmas tree in his front lawn 15 years ago. It has since grown to be more than 30 feet tall. Bensinger was shocked it came down this morning. He knows now, not to underestimate the power of mother nature.“It was angled a bit, but the roots were spread all over the place. So I'm surprised it actually fell over, but it’s just been so wet and muddy out there, and as you can see, all that mud pulled the whole thing over,” Bensinger said. He now has to live with a pile of pine chunks on his front lawn until county crews come to pick them up. Still, he is relieved no one was hurt.“I’m glad it didn’t fall onto somebody as they were falling down the street,” Bensinger said. The next storm is headed to San Diego County on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego.
