NANJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Sunday called for reform in talent cultivation and the education appraisal system among universities to boost innovation.The government would reform the education system to promote innovation, international vision and comprehensive abilities among students, Liu said at the opening of a forum of university presidents in Nanjing.Universities should explore new patterns of education with open minds and more cooperation with other research institutions and businesses, Liu said.Education and talent were the key elements in China's development.Liu also urged the universities to play a role as social think tanks to serve the country's economic and social development.Liu was speaking at the Chinese-Foreign University Presidents Forum, which was attended by the heads of about 150 universities around the world.

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left here Monday morning for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit on April 12-13 in Washington at the invitation of the U.S. President Barack Obama.Hu will deliver a speech stressing the importance of nuclear security and clarifying China's policy on the issue. Hu will meet with Obama on the sidelines of the summit.Up to now, leaders or representatives from 46 countries, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Union (EU), and other international organizations have confirmed their attendance."We hope common ground can be increased between all participants, and that they will pay greater attention to nuclear security, and work together to safeguard international peace and security," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said last week. Chinese President Hu Jintao delivers a keynote speech at a conference, which is held to conclude a nationwide campaign of studying and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development, in Beijing, capital of China, April 6, 2010. BRISBANE, Australia, April 4 (Xinhua) -- All the crew members are safe after a Chinese coal ship ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia on Saturday, said Chinese Consul-general in Brisbane Ren Gongping on Sunday.Ren told Xinhua that the 230-meter-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island in Queensland State shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday.The vessel, carrying 950 tons of heavy fuel oil and 65,000 tons of coal, is bound for China.Ren said he had phoned the captain of the carrier, Wang Jichang, who told Ren that drinking water and food are enough for the 23 crew members. The incident caused no injuries to the crew.The consul-general said the captain told him the incident is not serious and repair is underway.Ren added that he was very much concerned about the safety of the Chinese crew and he had contacted the local police immediately after learning the incident. The police had assured Ren that they would try their best to safeguard the crew in case of an emergency.Three police ships have reached the area and are ready to take the crew to safe place from the coal carrier.
